There are many factors to help determine if it is worth it or not.

Do you currently have a job that pays less or more with housing and medical? Do you want to retire after 20 years with pension? Are you a self-starter and can work on your own with little to no support.

A lot of 42As I've have to carry a heavy load when working at the company level.

I just jumped on the AGR program after Active Duty and coming off a deployment in Iraq as a reservist. With all the benefits and housing, jumping on the program was an easy choice for me.

Well first off most AGR positions start as E5, not all, but most. Also AGR positions are highly sought after, so be prepared to bring your A game for the application and selection process. I would share some of the things I did to people applying for AGR Recruiting positions, but I don’t want to scare you.

It seems like a no brainer! The pay is very generous comparative to private sector for required education and experience. With your BAH and free medical, you would probably come out ahead of what I was making as an attorney in my first job!! Usually they lead to more AGR jobs as you progress. Good luck in your decision.

It's a great job if you can get it. You are full time military but you don't have to worry about moving every few years. and you are serving your local community/state. Back in my guard days I always thought it was an awesome opportunity.

42A is one of the easier MOS's to assess into AGR. Most units need a PSNCO/HRNCO, and these slots are often E4/E5. It is quite a bit of responsibility for your pay grade, but it's hard to beat active duty benefits.

If you do a three year AGR tour as a 42A, you can likely get into a few good schools at Fort Knox that can help lead into a miltech position (if you're interesting in this path). 42As tend to get into Unit Admin Basic, Pay Administration, etc; which looks good if you ever want to be something like an ARA later on.

I just accessed into the AGR program as a specialist and it's been my best career decision thus far. As someone else said in the thread, you definitely have to be a self motivator, but if that isn't an issue, I say shoot for it. The pay is great, you have your benefits, you aren't PCS-ing every 3 years, and it's very easy to network with fellow AGR soldiers in your State.
