What are the purpose of CW5 at brigade levels?

Just a basic knowledge question. I’m stationed at JBLM and as I drive around I see a lot of units with CW5 personnel. My question what is the purpose of them? Thanks for the answers

I am surprised to hear they are at the BDEs as I didn’t think they were (not all anyway). However, they at tips in their fields and provide they COL/GO level staff input!

SGT Private RallyPoint Member as a deputy brigade commander, we had Warrant Officer as our Maintenance Officer, and Property Book Officer. Same at a Battalion. But, normally CW2 - 3, maybe 4. We had a 5 as our PBO at the Brigade, but he volunteered for a position that was open on Fort Bragg. Normally CW5s are at echelons above Brigade.

Many units employ a Command Warrant, that is dual hatted with another function. Our ADO was the Command Warrant at 4th Sustainment Brigade.

They advise the command on all things warrant including talent management, warrant officer slating etc.

I call bullshit on this post. SPC Sword, you claim to have actually seen a CW5? They are mythical creatures, much like Bigfoot, Santa Claus and the Loc Ness Monster. The CW5 exists only in our hearts and imaginations.

CW5s are master level experts of both the technical and tactical aspects of leading in their field and usually have extra leadership and representation responsibilities as well as the typical Warrant Officer responsibilities. They help with leader development, mentor-ship and advising Warrant and Branch Officers. They typically support operations at battalion, brigade, division, corps, and echelons levels above corps and other major operations.

At an Aviation Brigade they are usually in the S-3 shop and perform duties as a Tactical Ops, Avn Survivability Officer, Tactical planning and integration in combined ops at higher levels and when I was doing these duties I also managed the Aviation Life Support program.

The only BDE level CW5's I'm aware of are in the CABs. The BAMO, SNR test pilot, safety, and the CCWO are a few. I have seen CABs with up to 5 CW5's.
