What are the top 3 books that changed the way you thought, and lived your life and why? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-the-top-3-books-that-changed-the-way-you-thought-and-lived-your-life-and-why

My top 3 are:

1. Extreme Ownership by Jocko Wilinick - This was actually the first book I had read for enjoyment for a long time. I was escorting the wing CC around base and he recommended it for me and I bought it initially as a gesture. I ended up reading it and it definetly changed the way I thought about leadership at every level.

2. The total money makeover - My cousin gave me this book and it changed the way I viewed and spent money. It taught me to change my spending habits and think about where my money was going. I'm currently reading 'Die with zero" as well

3. The Tao - The Tao seems like it was written for me. Reading the Tao has helped me to calm down, go with the flow and embrace the uncertainty of life. David Havkworth
This I have re-read multiple times! There is so much in this book that a young leader ( like my self) can learn from. My current biggest take away is the similarity between the transition to a peacetime army that he went through and currently.
The dichotomy of Leadership- Jocko Wilink
This to me is the “leadership field manual for dummies “
Starship Troopers-Robert Heinlein
A great novel, but a lot of leadership points. As well as being on the army NCO reading list SPC Private RallyPoint Member Sat, 18 Sep 2021 05:13:35 -0400 2021-09-18T05:13:35-04:00 Response by SFC Casey O'Mally made Sep 18 at 2021 9:21 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-the-top-3-books-that-changed-the-way-you-thought-and-lived-your-life-and-why?n=7279476&urlhash=7279476

1. Stranger in a Strange Land - I read this when I had about 5 years time in service. For the remaining 15 years my one authorized religious medallion was a simple silver disk with the word "Grok" printed on it. The book's concept of truly understanding others resonated with me then, and still does.

2. Little Women - for no other reason than it is the first novel to lay the foundations of a lifelong love of reading. There are many more that have since built and strengthened that love, but this one was the first to really set everything else up. I have read so *many* great books, most of which I would have never done if not actually enjoying reading.

3. I'm going to cheat on the last one. It's not a book, but... The U.S. Constitution. It is amazing as a legislative document. It is awesome as an organizational document. It is even wonderful for an amateur lexicographer. What that did - and the amazingly concise way it did it - is a marvel even today. I look at the brevity of the Constitution, and then compare it to the modern bills which are THOUSANDS of pages long, and I am just in awe. Plus, it is my belief that it is impossible to be a "good" citizen (well-informed, acting in the interest of the nation, taking responsibility for self *and* nation; not necessarily just "following rules") without reading and understanding this document. Starship Trooper by Heinlein (book not movie) teaches us about leadership. Though set in future as science fiction, leader qualities are shown.

2. The Art of War by Sunzi.

3. The Hobbit by Tolkien. Showed me how even a small, lone person can be make a big difference when he breaks out of his shell. Started me on a path as a free thinker.

Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. Taught me that economics is human behavior, not math, and that it's easier to understand than most would want you to know.

The Federalist Papers/The Anti-Federalist Papers, various authors. Affirmed the genius of our Constitution and illustrated that the Anti-Federalist were completely justified in their fears as every prediction of misinterpretation and abuse has come to pass just not as quickly as they thought.
