What are you reading this year? (RP Reading List)

This year, I'm taking some time to work on getting back to reading. I've read the majority of the Senior Leaders' reading lists in the past, but thought that maybe some folks here would have some good ideas for books to read in 2014

So far:
The Odyssey: Homer - I'm sure most of us remember this from English Class in high school/College. Interesting to pick up years later.

The First Heroes - Craig Nelson - The extraordinary story of the Doolittle Raid, America's first WWII Victory

Attacks - Field Marshal Erwin Rommel - Rommel's personal journal from WWI with still-relevant lessons learned

I'm reading my own book - Waging War On Debt (ok shameless plug) which was written from years of teaching our Military to kill debt & create wealth utilizing our unique opportunities and mitigating our challenges. I share a simple 10 step plan which will have you completely debt free (including mortgage) and have residual income, so you can actually retire on your Military retirement pay.

My reading so far this year has been purely entertainment however I would reccomend that you read Unbroken if you haven't already. I read this book last year and it is truly an inspirational piece.

Sustainability Minor has me reading just about anything other than leadership or military art this year.
However: Charles E. Closmann, ed., War and the Environment: Military Destruction in the Modern Age (College Station: Texas A&M Press, 2009).
Good read, my professor actually did the section on Sherman's March to the sea.

Reading for purely entertainment purposes these days, I am re-reading a couple different series of books: Tom Clancy and Harold Coyle novels.

I have a ton of military books but I just got done reading "Two Wars" by Nathan Self. He was the leader of the QRF that was launched as a rescue mission for a Navy SEAL that was thrown from a helicopter. The first part of the book spoke of the battle from his eyes but in the second part he really opened up about the struggles in dealing with PTS. It is a great read and I reccomend it to anyone looking for a good book.

For leadership, you can't beat "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. Also, read "The Godfather" by Mario Puzo and see how the Don Treats everyone from the baker's assistant to the senators

SFC,

Over the past year I've read War, Ender's game (not on the reading list last I saw, but a book that should speak to S2s everywhere), and am in the process of reading Once an Eagle which is taking significantly longer than I'd prefer, but between family and work I don't have much time for anything else at this point.

My mentor recently suggested that I read Common Sense Training by Lt. Gen. Arthur S.Collins Jr. U.S. Army Retired. I wish I had read it years ago. I will read it again.

I just picked up the entire five volume set of Cosmos: A Sketch of the Physical Description of the Universe by Alexander von Humboldt. As a civilian again transitioning into a STEM field, this book is essentially the foundation for the natural sciences and I say is a must read for anyone with a strong interest in science.

I am currently 80% done with my 5th Jack Reacher novel. I love books of a series. I feel like I really get to know the characters and the author, Lee Childs, does a great job.

Professional: I'm reading anything on Evidence Based Practices and Motivational Interviewing. Yay and blah.
