A Solder will tell you a lot through casual conversation even when joking. Knowing what to listen for could tell you there are problems somewhere, or with people, that you could/need to take action on without his/her direct knowledge. Listening also tells your troops you are there for them and when they come to you, you'll listen to their concerns and not let them start to talk and you begin talking over them. That to me is the most important quality and it even transcends the military.
