My best qualities were " Lead from the front" I never told my soldiers to do something that I have either never done, or have no problem doing. For example giving a new soldier to my Platoon or Squad, I would first show them how to do it, crawl phase, then do it with them walk phase, then watch them do it run phase.

Being fair and equitable with all my subordinates and never making a hallway decision. Active listening...not hearing...actively engage on the process of listening to all sides of an issue prior to making a decision...especially when it comes to accountability with subordinates. I tried to get all perspectives because I have found that the flame burns on both ends of a story and when it meets in the middle, there is usually where the truth resides. Active listening is a hard skill to master and I still struggle with it...especially now that I am retired.

Listening. A Solder will tell you a lot through casual conversation even when joking. Knowing what to listen for could tell you there are problems somewhere, or with people, that you could/need to take action on without his/her direct knowledge. Listening also tells your troops you are there for them and when they come to you, you'll listen to their concerns and not let them start to talk and you begin talking over them. That to me is the most important quality and it even transcends the military.

First Listen to your NCO's, and stay out their way, but keep an eye on them so that they do not get too crazy. Always eat after your troops, and walk the perimeter checking on your guard duty sentries, and share in guard duty. After long march have soda and beer ready!

- honesty (consistent behavior - me at 0300 is that same guy as the one at 1200)
- communication (includes listening)
- creativity (derived from being well rounded not just book smarts)
- never quit attitude (however this can be a fault at times as I expect others to be willing to persevere what I am willing to persevere)
- confidence (derived from being mentally and physically prepared)
- self assessment (know your strengths and weaknesses and work to constantly improve)

Well I don't really know but after my decision to retire, numerous Soldiers have come to me to ask me not to and to extend because' "You genuinely care for the Soldiers and are approachable. We have never had this before and we appreciate it." This is the responses I received, not trying to toot my horn or anything, but those comments really made me feel like I was doing my job as a CSM correctly.

I'm not certain if this answer is what you're looking for, but here's my "last" quality. In the FM for military leadership it lists one of the traits as knowing your weaknesses and seeking self improvement. Well I knew my weakness in how I disagreed with my views of how the military used to be (TIS 3/82-/93 & 6/01-10/13) I had to retire. I didn't and still don't agree with political policies that developed. I felt I could not support my command with 100% of my abilities any further. So, that's mine!

Probably the grestest Leadrship Quality is my ability to look out for my people, and to stick up for them when they step on their cranks and others are dogpiling on them. When your people and others see you act this way you gain respect from your subordinates and peers.

I have learned this from some great NCO's during my Army time; and have carried it on as an Officer at my VFW Posts I have affiliated with.

They are not set. The Attributes and Competencies give you what a Leader be know and do. Each Leader is different. No "way" to be a Leader. Draw from all Leadership styles.
