What are your feelings on units requiring additional schools (Air Assault, Airborne etc.) before being allowed to appear before a board?

Schools should only be required if they are necessary to the Units mission. An example would be Airborne school with the 82nd. The 82nd primary mission is airfield seizure. It's difficult to be mission capable if you have leaders that cannot jump.

Some units require certain schools as SGT Meston pointed out, particularly when you become an NCO the pressure to meet unit mandated certifications like being Air Assault School qualified at Campbell or Jump Master qualified in Airborne units comes with the territory of being assigned to these types of units. If you ever find yourself assigned to a Cavalry unit for example you will be required to earn your Spurs and purchase a Stetson. Although no one will ever say it's mandatory, they do say it's highly encouraged. Which of course equates to GET IT DONE!

If it's part of your unit's mission, absolutely. It would be kind of hard to lead troops on an airborne mission if you have to meet them at the objective because you can't jump, wouldn't it?

SGT Private RallyPoint Member I'm not sure about today, but in the 1990's you will not wear a green tab unless you have been to Air Assault School (if stationed at Fort Campbell). I have to agree. Special units have special requirements. Lead by example!

As long as they will pay for you to attend them, I don't see a problem with it, as long as it is within reason. ie, I see no reason for a logistician to be required to attend jump school. lol

Myself I think it's great. It's forcing young soldiers to take take care of their career and better themselves from the start. Gets rid of the week ones too..
