SPC Private RallyPoint Member 5150598

Thinking about a PCS to Fort Stewart I’m a 91M so I’ll be in a heavy brigade but I’ve heard mixed reviews about it some to the point of saying that it’s a 100% don’t go there, and some I’ve heard it’s alright, anyone that is currently there in a heavy brigade or has been there in the past I want your opinion ! What are your opinions on being assigned to a heavy brigade at Fort Stewart? 2019-10-21T09:21:05-04:00 SPC Private RallyPoint Member 5150598

Never trust others when it comes to picking a instillation, every experience is different. Such as I am at Fort Benning and love it, but others think this is the worst place ever. It’s all in the job you do and how you approach it. The Family and Soldier care support systems were good. While it is remote, it is close to Savanah and the Ocean. Like any small town there are issues. I have professional aquaintences still on sight and they say it is still a great assignment. The Army, everywhere, is what you make of it. Thank you for your service. At least not at Ft Stewart. I was in the only transportation company in the division. The training tempo was intense. I had no problems being there. If you remember that Ft Stewart is a rapid deployment mechanized armor playground you will be fine. Ft Stewart is a place where you actually train to do ARMY shit. 3rd ID has a proud history in the defense of out nation. If your looking for a place where the food is great, the time off is plentiful, and rigors of training are non existent than Ft Stewart will burn you up like a burnt match. If you wanna train, get uber proficient in your MOS and have pride in your unit Ft Stewart is a great place to be. Remember also if your outdoorsy and a US history buff the surrounding area is a bread basket for both hobbies. It was the 2nd worse duty station I have ever been to (#1 worse would be Camp Lejeune). Its really hot most of the year. It is one of the "Rotation Big 3" bases (other two are Fort Riley and Fort Hood). Meaning It's a constant deployment rotation base that sends soldiers to Korea and Eastern Europe (mainly Poland). Which due to the tight rotational unit restrictions can make it a TOUGH time in either country.

Pros:
- close to Savannah
- most likely won't have to deal with snow
- MANY key locations right outside the base. I.E. Walmart, US post office, indoor shooting ranges, movie theater
- the only bowling alleys in Hinesville are on base and there is TWO of them...
- MANY gyms on base

Cons:
- your branch manager will not PCS you out of there unless you call and put a bug in their ear. And unless you have been there for 36 months they will ignore your requests. VERY FEW Soldiers are requesting to be stationed in Fort Stewart. So obviously getting replacements for the ones already there is tough. I myself had to call my branch manager and request Korea just to get the heck out of there. It worked though.
- Its HOT!!! and the humidity makes it worse.
- Change of command ceremonies are the worst there. Due to the heat I've seen more service members fall out and need ambulatory service in the two and a half years spent in on this base than the rest of my service time combined. Saw one PFC go into convulsions. We seriously thought he was going to die.
- You'll be deployed about 40% of your time there. Me being single with no kids it was great for me though.
- 15% to 30% of your time while at Fort Stewart will be out in the field. Marne Focus, Raider Focus, gunnery ranges etc etc. It never stops.

If I think of more I'll come back and add to this. But this should give you an Idea what to expect. I would say they are the hardest working mechanics and the closest to having a some what of a family oriented platoon. As long as you’re doing the right thing, you will be taken care of. I’m in 2 brigade btw. Just remember that everything is a matter of subjectivity, you should always considered the source but don’t make a decision based on what someone else says. Overall, Fort Stewart or any other base you go to will be what YOU make it. You can't force pride in a unit but they sure try. PT is lax and not effective there, like most heavy units.
Yeah, you're a 91M so you're destined for heavy life forever. It is the complete opposite from Carson in terms of humidity, you will be soaked.
It's like a 75-90 minute drive to Savannah, Hinesville absolutely sucks which is right outside post. The locals were okay the food areas were good it was difficult to find a good rental to live in the Florida was closed by Savannah was great Atlanta wasn't too far and the base was easy to navigate. Since then I've been back a few times to visit I show my children where they were born. If you're a mechanic and a heavy Brigade it'll certainly keep you occupied and heck it's the army so is there ever any perfect Duty station? Lots of training and long days, mostly past 1700. Depending on which brigade you go to, 1st is where I’m at and we work a lot, so if your thinking of coming down just get ready to tighten your belt and take off your top because it’s hot!
