What are your stories? Officers, that means you too.

We had to paint rocks. The under side too.

One of my all time favorite memories.
I was a 2Lt in Germany. When I reported in the Battery Commander told me that I was assigned as the Recognizance and Survey Officer, but not to worry about that there was a good NCO covering that section. He wanted me to make a home in the motor pool and get that squared away.
I’m a farm boy from Central Texas… I am in hog heaven. I am working in the maintenance shop, even put on coveralls and turned wrenches occasionally.
One day a runner comes down and tells me that I am to report to the Battalion Commander. I am anxious, what have I done…
I report to the colonel and am standing at parade rest in front of his desk. He starts into a tirade about me being seen in the motor pool in coveralls, having grease on my hands… I am scared to death. He gets up from his desk and comes around, pulling his pocket knife out of his pocket. He cut my 2Lt bar off my uniform. I am completely lost… what just happened?
About that the adjutant called the room to attention and read my promotion orders to 1Lt. While the colonel is giving me a hard time all of the other battalion officers had entered the room and were standing in the back.
Undoubtedly the most memorial promotion I’ve ever experienced. Thank you Sir.

Holy cow! Now that rich! I use to haze my soldiers when they got promoted. Take their rank off, throw it on the ground. Pin on the new rank crooked and replaced their cover on sloppy. Then drop them for pushups for uniform. After that make them pick up the "litter" off the ground.

SrA Christopher Wright - The service is a truly great experience. Hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did.

Before I transitioned over to the Army...I remember sweeping up water puddles on the weather decks of the ship...before pulling in port. All the while, it was raining.

PO1 John Miller , oddly enough, I wasn't in deck division...I was a FC. We had our own weather decks to maintain...even if it meant sweeping up water in the rain.

The FC's on my last ship had their own weather decks as well. Luckily I never saw them sweeping water in the rain though! :)

PO1 John Miller - I had a very old school, crusty/salty FCC who was every bit about ensuring our spaces looked good, as he was about ensuring our weapon systems and radars were always in peak working condition. He was the epitome of the work hard - play hard persona - he was one of my earliest leadership mentors and to this day I still talk to him about anything and everything.

Don't get me wrong, the FC's on my last ship worked hard maintaining their systems, but they didn't have to swab or sweep water in the rain! :)

As an former Engineman on a Diesel submarine, I feel your pain. Good training for a Middie, though.
