"stolen valor" is considered free speech unless someone gets compensation.

Since these posers are attempting to gain "goodwill", and "goodwill" is a well defined non-monetary asset (you tend to shop in places with higher "goodwill") then why isn't "stolen valor" de facto compensation?

Great question! If you could prove that the person made $1 or received a discount for being a veteran, they could get prosecuted

Charles Caleb Colton once said, "Imitation is the sincerest [form] of flattery."

While this may be true, it's just not right when it comes to stolen valor regardless of who does it; active duty, reservists, veterans, retirees, or those who have never served.

I find it offensive. These people try to to get all the accolades and freebies that some places give our service members. I don't even try to get it.

Meanwhile, there are vets like me who don't normally bother with the discounts and freebies. My wife gets mad at me sometimes because I don't bother to ask. I didn't enlist to get discounts and freebies later in life.

Stolen valor disgusts me as well.
