I think this is a dangerous precedent. The president should not be doing things for religious leaders of any religion that he wouldn't do for heads of state. What happens now when the next, non-radical Shah of Iran wants to come (you just know that's coming)?

******Update******

I can see that I really stepped in it with this post, so I would like to take a moment to make some stuff clear:

1. I have not modified or changed this post for the simple reason that I missed the boat publicly, so I'm eating the crow without trying to hide the fact that I missed the boat. I think that walking it back after making a public mistake would be disingenuous, at best.

2. The boat I missed was that, as has been pointed out quite....eloquently...to me, is that past Presidents have also gone to the Pope. I did, in fact, do a search for other incidents and missed them. Poor search terms, whatever. No matter, I missed them.

Now, for the more (to me, with regards to my position on this issue) important points:

3. THIS WAS NEVER intended in any way to be an attack on the Pope, or Catholicism in ANY manner whatsoever. I would have had this same view about any religious leader -- incorrectly, yes, as we've seen.

4. People that like Obama or respect him or generally view him positively assume that this was directed at him. It was not. It would have been directed at ANY sitting President. And, in fact, upon being set straight about it happening in the past, I think the same thing about all of them. Even Reagan.

5. So, I apologize if I came across as attacking the Pope or Catholics. I would never do so intentionally. And while I personally don't hold Obama in high regard, as I said, this wasn't aimed at him specifically, and so I apologize if it seems it was.

SN Greg Wright - A total of zero lives were lost, and zero jobs were lost by this decision from our president, and the separation between church and state does not prohibit the United States government from interacting with, and respecting religion. I think there is a difference between legislating religion, and showing respect towards religion in our very religious country. The only unprecedented thing that has happened during this Pope’s visit is that he spoke before the joint session of Congress, and I think you’ll note that was not the title of your discussion. I think considering the action that is most concerning between whether the chief diplomat of the United States greets the head of one of the largest religions in the world at the airport, or whether the chief national legislative body of the United States listen to a speech by this Pope in the actual building where they pass laws; I would say the latter is the most concerning….Seaman (seriously I don’t see what my former rank has anything to do with my opinion on this topic)

Cpl Chris Rice - It has nothing to do with it. I was according you the respect due for it. If in future interactions you don't want me to...just say so.

SN Greg Wright - My apologies, Tone is hard to convey, personally for me being a corporal was something that happened a long time ago. Please address me as you wish, I need to learn to give people the benefit of the doubt

SSgt (Join to see) - UM, you missed reading the first amendment where it says Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. That means the U.S. government IS kept from declaring one religion or the another.

Heh. A lot of people forget this, but the Pope IS a head of state - the Vatican City-State, to be exact.

It should be noted that President Bush also greeted Pope Benedict at the airport.

SN Greg Wright - My response was to the comments by CW4 Guy Butler about the President being slammed. Plus, I said "The GOP", not "SN Greg Wright". Don't be so defensive.

Yeah, that was my first reaction as well. He's a head of state. A state that should be investigated by an international criminal court, maybe, but a state nonetheless.

Forgive me for being blunt but why should anyone give a shit?
What Obama has done is nothing no other president before him has done. The only difference is that's it's Obama, the GOP has made it a precedence to criticize everything he does or doesn't do, and it's something else for those that hate the president to whine about. REALLY, RP personnel? THIS is what's important?!?

SSG Michael Hartsfield I am a Republican and I look at this and go, who the hell comes up with this shit? So the President greets a guest of the US? I blame the news. Factual reporting on both sides of the political realm suck.
