What are your thoughts on service members assigned to overseas who get married and then are dumped once they get their green card?

Why do military commanders no longer "interview" service members prior to allowing them to marry, especially in cases where a service member wants to marry a foreign national, who a majority of the time is just looking for a green card and then become more of a drain on the finances, readiness, health and well being of the military services?

It's the world's second oldest profession, which is generally preceded by said SM being party to the world's first oldest profession. For a young, sheltered SM being out and about in the world for the first time they become a target of opportunity - ticket to land of big PX.

Because if you were to allow a commander to interview for marriage, then, I'm sure, someone will (or has) complained that it seems like the military is trying to control their love life. In the PC world that we live in today, you can't even look at someone wrong w/o the ACLU screaming at you.
However, I agree. There should be something in place to prevent this. Not only is it a drain on the country, but the service member, as well. ESPECIALLY if there are children involved!

I understand the concern. It is the same one I have. I think it would be "swallowable" if it were kept on the local command level & not someone sitting in the Pentagon either raising their thumb, or lowering it on different marriages.

Perhaps just a simple conversation about the dangers? Nothing like a "Thou shalt not marry one which thou hast known for a mere 2 weeks." Although, that seems to be good sound advice all the way around :)

Does it even matter if the person they are marrying is a foreign national??? Soldiers still find a way to marry AMERICANs that know more about the military than the new soldiers. We as leaders just need to educate soldiers about these things because unless they know it's going to happen.
