Aside from a sizeable scar and occasional residual pain I'm all good now but it was a close, close call. As the doc in the CASH told me, "If that IED had gone off half a second earlier it would have cut you in two." To which I replied, "If it had gone off half a second later it would have missed me completely."

I've since become a bit more glass-half-full kinda guy. I am striving for humility and charity these days, trying to avoid pride as I grow closer to God, so I never talk about it, and it’s put away in a box.

Still, it was awarded for actions in combat which I would later come to view as the most challenging day of my life.

It meant a lot to me privately. I have awards, but I don't believe that any of them really mean anything to me because of the situations behind them. For instance, one of the AAMs I received was for earning 2nd place in the DIVARTY Best FIST Competition WHEN MY ENTIRE F---ING TEAM AND I BEAT EVERY OTHER TEAM OUT THERE! AND WITH THEIR TEST MATERIALS! We were supposed to get ARCOMs for placing 1st, but 2nd Battalion's CDR and CSM were judges. So they handed the win to their Battalion FIST.
