What big news story happened while you went through basic training?

Going through basic there was limited news coming in from the outside world except two small TV's in the opposite side of the dfac we exited from after we finished chow. when I went through the penn state child abuse scandal was happeneing and it was the only thing that was ever on those things. what about you? this could say a lot about your age as well :D

PFC Alexander Oliveira just like you, we had 2 tv's in front of the CQ desk where we held Formation. There was a tiny 1" strip with news where I read that Phillip Seymour Hoffman had die of an overdose. Being a big fan of him, that was shocking...

PFC Alexander Oliveira, I enlisted and later started BCT at Fort Jackson (Tank Hill), SC, on 11NOV69. The big news occurred on 1DEC69 when the big draft lottery was held (for the year 1970). My number was 332 and the highest number that was called that year was 179! Had I not enlisted, I would have never have even had to serve!

Y2K "scare". I grad 30DEC 99 and due to the "scare" of Y2K they kept us on base for an extra 2 days after grad.

Seriously...there was a Delta crash at DFW and we found out that some of the passengers would have been in our baby flight...kinda devastating.

Swine Flu outbreak at Fort Dix. We actually found out before most of the country, and were among the first to be vaccinated.

"In 1976, an outbreak of the swine flu, Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 at Fort Dix, New Jersey caused one death, hospitalized 13, and led to a mass immunization program. After the program began, the vaccine was associated with an increase in reports of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which can cause paralysis, respiratory arrest, and death. The immunization program was ended after approximately 25% of the population of the United States had been administered the vaccine."
