What can my son expect for advanced promotion in the AF?

My son joined the Airforce and has 27 college credits. The recruiter told him he will get promoted after basic. I have read that he could have went in as a E2. I would like some thoughts?

Recruiters - Low life sometimes but they still honestly miss alot of the times out of simple error.
Did you meet the guy first, before your son signed up?

If it's not in his contract; he may be Simply Out of Luck (SOL).
In the Army though, E2 is an automatic promotion after 6 months. While I have limited experience with the Air Force I am guessing they have a similar automatic promotion time line.

How’s it going sir, so In order for your son to have been promoted to E2 with credits its needs to have been in his contract. If it wasn’t in the contract then he’s SOL. Those credits be of use towards his CCAF but not really anything else.

When I enlisted, about a million years ago, enlistees earned rank upon graduation from basic based on numerous factors. Those included number of college credits and length of enlistment. So theoretically he could have earned Airman (E2), upon successful completion of BMT. That is, IF that program or provision in the AFI covering enlistments is still in effect. As I told my own children before they entered military service, if it's not in writting anywhere in the contract, then it was never promised.

Basic was a while ago, PFC Schoenborn, so bear with me.
I was a college sophomore when I enlisted, and came in as an E-2. Like others have already said, it was part of the initial contract. I was paid as an E2 throughout Basic, but I didn't wear the rank until the last few days (as we were all equally worthless).
If it wasn't in his initial contract, I don't think he can backpedal now. Putting on E-2 once he gets to his first duty station should happen pretty quick.

Update! I spoke with the recruiter this morning. He looked up my sons contact and he is listed as an E2. He will get his rank after basic! Thank you all who replied.

Now if he'd have joined the army he might have even made E-3 or E-4 while in basic. I'm sure he'll be happy with the Air Force it'll just take him longer to make rank.

That stuff changes as needs change. Check the date or make sure what you read is the most up to date policy. But if he already signed in he might be SOL.

They stopped promoting upon enlistment not to long after I came in. The TI’s were merciless towards them.
