For those who want to call it an insurgency yes it was an insurgency and he used innovative tactics to win. However like all insurgencies, it wants to grow into a traditionally large army and it did.
He had the power to go toe to toe against the Romans and won 9 straight battles. The slave army and Spartacus were at the Northern fringes of Italy with nothing but freedom, but his followers wanted to pillage Italy which spelled the beginning to the end.

Sir, Spartacus' revolt was a classic case of an insurgency. While Rome was large, strong, and slow, Spartacus and his men were small, innovative, and nimble. The Romans suffered badly from Spartacus' ambushes, mobile flank attacks, sudden turnabouts, and night attacks. The Romans had to resort to isolating and starving them out before facing them in combat.

You are right it was an insurgency. The Spartacus Army was quite large, but there were too many generals that ripped up the slave army into sections. They failed at UNITY OF COMMAND, OBJECTIVE, and MASS. Sometimes Spartacus' army was bigger than the Roman ones and demolished them by going toe to toe with them.
