WHAT CONDITIONS ARE “PRESUMED” TO BE CAUSED BY MILITARY SERVICE?
For Veterans that Served in the Southwest Asia Theater of Operations during the Gulf War with condition at least 10 percent disabling by 12/31/11. Included are medically unexplained chronic multi-symptom illnesses defined by a cluster of signs or symptoms that have existed for six months or more, such as:
- chronic fatigue syndrome
- fibromyalgia
- irritable bowel syndrome
- any diagnosed or undiagnosed illness that the Secretary of Veterans Affairs determines warrants a presumption of service connection

The links provided does a good job of covering the vast majority of presumptive conditions for which compensation claims may be filed. It is also important to encourage veterans to file their claims as soon as possible after discharge. I also highly recommend that they consult with a Veterans Service Officer. They are highly trained, accredited (most through multiple organizations) and their services are free to the veteran. Find a service officer here:

I could not agree more. It is also very helpful to seek the assistance of the Veterans Service Officer. Veterans Service Organizations (e.g. American Legion, American Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, et.al.). Veterans Service Officers have the sole purpose of assisting Veterans in filing claims for Service Connected Disabilities. They do a great job assisting veterans and provide these services free of charge regardless of whether or not you are a member of their organization.
