What did you want to get or learn from RallyPoint when you first joined?

My question hasn't been asked, I checked. I want to know what your expectations were when you joined RallyPoint and have they been met?

Please put a little thought into your answers instead of just "yes" or "no"!

For me, I expected RallyPoint to be just another social media site like Facebook or LinkedIn. I was really surprised by some of the very sharp, professional, and outstanding individuals that I've interacted with to-date on the site. I'm glad that I've helped influence a few individuals in the right direction and help a few with advice and motivation. Some of the discussions have been very helpful and informative. There are individuals that take the time to really post great questions, topics, and provide excellent feedback. It is more than just a social media site for me. It's a great place to provide information for others in areas that are important to you as the individual and to gain insight and feedback from others. I really feel like I've made some lasting connections and friendships from afar!

I too was expecting another social media site but just for my brothers and sisters in arms. But I have already gotten the impression that many people here especially higher ranking are here for mentoring which is great. I look forward to being able to seek advice from the more seasoned members.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I can't say just what I expected; I expect very little these days and am seldom disappointed.

What I found however, was a community of like-minded people that I haven't seen in large groups for 43 years. People that understand the world and the concept of duty before self. It felt like coming home after a long absence.

I also wanted to contact old shipmates, but had no luck doing so. I stayed for the quality of discourse and lively interplay of differing viewpoints. Being a Navy brat whose father transitioned from enlisted to officer before my own service, I had a different attitude and appreciation of both worlds -- it didn't hurt growing up in so many diverse postings either. I hope that my posts to this community are enlightening or helpful in some small way.

I was looking for a way to continue to serve. With the state of our nation and the world, it is important that those of us who have lost friends and comrades to never lose sight of what that means. It is about the person to your left and your right and we owe it their memories and sacrifice to help each other heal and continue to thrive as human beings and veterans. It is amazing to be with liked minded people who understand duty, honor, and sacrifice; who selflessly still serve. It is my honor to be here and share and help my fellow veterans.

Its a great focal point to mentor and be mentored. Its also a location to discuss issues with those who understand rather than facebook and the comment section in 'news' articles.

I joined thinking that this was the next best dating service....oh, wait, no, that was something else!! :-) Truly tho, I joined to connect with other military members, either already known to me, or meet new people (online or in person). I have been able to provide my insight (right, wrong, or indifferent), and look at what other people are saying and thinking. This is providing exactly what I felt that it would provide when I signed up. It is what the people that participate in it, make it. And currently, it is good.

converse with other like minded vets about military related news and issues or various topics of the day. I find it much more appealing than FB because for the reasons I mentioned earlier and I don't feel a need to subscribe to other social media sites(instagram/twitter/etc).

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I was invited by a couple of my LinkedIn connections. Since they were LinkedIn connections, I expected that RallyPoint would be much more professional, courteous, respectful and informative than my experience with Facebook has been.
Since I joined in March 2015, I have generally found that RallyPoint has been a site where I can have professional, courteous, respectful and informative discussions with fellow veterans, active duty military service members and civilian supporters.
I hoped to reconnect with many former comrades-in-arms; but, that goal has been somewhat elusive for me to meet. However, on the plus side I have met many new friends on RallyPoint that I share interests with.
I appreciate more focused discussions where ideas can be bounced around and discussed in a mature manner.
I also appreciate good humor and puns when appropriate and have found that RallyPoint has many members who also enjoy good humor which I define as funny without directly offending people. I saw something on Facebook that mentioned Rally Point. I followed the link and FINALLY was able to sign up with the help of new friends. Unfortunately, I came under direct attack from a couple of members in connection with a comment to one of LTC Stephen Ford's comments. JP4 finally came to the rescue and got things cooled down. I nearly gave up on this site at that time. I am glad I stayed. Makes me wish I would have stayed active duty as well. I hope I've made some kind of positive impact for someone since then.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I wasn't sure what to expect of Rallypoint when I joined. I wanted to try to find service members I have served with. I have found some, I've also made new connections. I'm inspired here by learning that others have the same concerns and thoughts about issues affecting the Army, the world, and even localities. We have conversations which are informative on important issues (and sometimes not so important), debate without becoming enemies, and learn from each other. Where one is weak another is strong. There is a special connection between brothers and sisters in arms and it can be felt here.

I was hoping it would be a forum where I could 'get my military fix' and walk away when I had enough, network with Veterans and continue to be mentored by the nations finest.

What I actually learned is that there are a LOT of Veterans with to much time on their hands and SM's who should be working more and playing on RP less. LOL, seems that this site is like crack to a lot of folks...

I actually hesitated in joining due to a lack of trust in the website and it's initial solicitation. Once on board I found the awesome members of other DoD services whom I could share knowledge and gain understanding from. My multi-service and multi-COMPO knowledge and reference has grown immensely. I strive to let peer and subordinate folks know about it in order to grow. Overall it is professional and growth inspiring albeit a couple of strings, opinions and folks who attempt to stir it up.

I had no expectations. I liked the idea of a website that was comprised of veterans and service members. I love military history. I love military humor, problem with both of those is that it is often wasted on people who have never served, and don't have the point of reference. Here I can post that stuff and people understand it. Additionally, for a long time I didn't even like to mention that I had served. I had personal reasons for this. Once I came on here I found others with a similar mindset, and pushed past it. I have also discovered that there are things I care about that I didn't even consciously think about. PTSD awareness, Veteran suicide rate, and of course the ever popular VA situation all come to mind. I have met too many wonderful people to name them all here. I have had disagreements with people, but overall I find the people on this site to be good folk.

I don't want to leave this as such a downer so in conclusion beware of the Bassalope Missle.

I first joined as part of my work with and for Veterans. I'm always looking for new and exciting ways for Veterans to remain connected. After standing in the wings for awhile, I started to voice my thoughts and ideas. And after several discussions with LTC Yinon Weiss and CPT Laurie H. and several other RallyPoint staff members I started to really enjoy this site as a place to gain and share knowledge. And after attending RPx last year and meeting some of the people from this site I was interacting with online, I really took the plunge. I think those of us that been here since the launch of this site can all agree that what we have here is bigger than just one person, one war, one branch. When used correctly, this can be a very effective tool for us all. Here you can come and not only get advice from some GOs but that GO can also get advice from you. The way RallyPoint has impacted the military and Veteran space may not be totally measurable but you can see it when you look around. It goes beyond networking, points and badges...this is truly a place for Veterans to help other Veterans.

I actually signed up for RP due to a topic one of my FB friends "shared." I checked it out and liked it so much that I verified my status and the rest is history.

RP has so much more to offer than FB and LinkedIn. I like to say it combines the 2 and also has a little Together We Served thrown into the mix. It is truly a place where active duty and veterans can be themselves and look out for each other.

Initially, all I wanted to do was respond to an article that I was involved with getting published that was posted here on the site. However, after a few days looking around at the site, I realized it was actually a very well developed piece of social media. I'm interested in developing a deeper network with other service members and veterans, both for my volunteer work, and for my day to day work as well. This site has really encouraged me to do so in a lot of subtle and effective ways.

COL Mikel Burroughs, I wanted to join RallyPoint because it was different than other social media outlets such as Facebook, and Twitter. It was exclusively for military. I like how it connects us, from all across different branches and across the world, and brings us back together. Through RallyPoint, not only can we can make social connections but we can also make professional connections as well. Currently, I am finishing up my Bachelor's Degree next July and immediately after, I begin working on my dual Master's Degree. That makes RallyPoint a great place, for me, to begin networking myself as well. I think RallyPoint could help land me some great connections for the job I am seeking back in the government.

RP presents a unique way for current and former service members to connect with each other that transcends the traditional local Veterans group. It provides an additional layer of support for those who have served that never existed before. It gives us the ability to explore our unique senses of humor that we don't traditionally see in the civilian realm.

As RP grows, I hope that not only will I be able to connect with more and more people with whom I've served, but also I hope to meet more and more great people from all walks of life that decided to put on the uniform and serve our great country.

Honestly, Sir, when I first joined the Navy, everything I saw that was military I thought I should be a part of. So I heard of RallyPoint and thought, "Ooh, military website. Let me get in on that." For awhile afterwards I was pretty inactive until more recently I came across it again, and actually started reading, responding to and commenting on posts and even posted one thread that was trending for a little bit there. Overall I've enjoyed reading other people's opinions and I've realized even more how much of a tight-knit family this military really is. In the beginning I didn't really have something I wanted out of RallyPoint, but all the kind words and some very helpful people have really made the venture an enjoyable one. I suspect I'll be keeping up with this site long after I'm out of the military, which is a day that's still out of sight thus far.

Didn't really know what to expect from RP. It was recommended to me by good friend who is NOT connected to the military but has strong ties to the military here in San Diego. I was looking for a place to advertise that I wanted to sell my business to a veteran. I also thought I might find and connect with former shipmates.
At First I was a bit leery about the enlisted - officer divide I remember from the Navy. I have been pleasantly surprised that the divide does not seem to exist in RP. Enjoyed the interesting discussions that happen here. I have only been a member for a month or so but I have to say I am hooked. For the most part much better than FB.

Actually, Sir, I wasn't expecting or looking to gain anything when I first joined and, like you, I assumed it to be another social media site, not to mention, at the time I joined, it seemed to be a more AD/Ret Army-centric crowd/issues, which I really couldn't effectively contribute to. I'm not sure why, but decided to poke my head in the door after receiving a random RP email through Linked-In this year (had to request my user name and password again, it had been that long), and was pleasantly surprised with a couple of connections I actually knew and worked with, as well as many thought-provoking topics ( and some not-so-thought-provoking) and all branches of service seemed to be adequately represented now. Not exactly sure when it happened, but I began returning more and more (daily now) and joining in on many of the discussions and was surprised at having to back off from a few of them to reconsider my opinions on a few things... That, for me, was awesome as we have a diverse crowd from all over which forces me to think, a lot... and so? Here I have remained!

At first I would start commenting on the Facebook post but then I quickly learned that quite frankly I didn't give two $@!&$ about some civilian's opinion on a topic completely unrelated to them. I wanted to share my opinion with those that understood and that it directly influenced. The reason it took me so long to join is that I was a little leery of joining a community that just "anyone" can create an account, be unverified and still see/respond to discussions. However, now I have found myself quite addicted. :)

I have my opinions and sometimes people disagree and I learn from them that the more I know or believe, I sometimes forget the context or I don't see the big picture as clearly and sometimes I am myopic and I have to reevaluate my stance. That is what I am learning from this forum is that with the collective ideas and respectful debate/disagreements from others we can be a better profession or be better people with better empathy of that with we disagree with or don't understand fully. I really like this forum!

I expected a bunch of bs'ing and memes of Carl. What I have found is thoughtful, current, and engaged conversations around topics that interest me.

I was hoping to link up with guys I served with..& when I first joined I got into a donnybrook with some Army officers who would not accept the fact the Marine Corps is by far the best of the best branches of the military. Not only in the USA but worldwide .. And explains why Gen Joe Dunford USMC is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Somehow all these officers now just ignore me...must be something in the atmosphere here ??

Created an account finally just to be able to see full articles and comments and be able to comment myself. Never expected to get much from it, I've signed up for plenty of military/government newsletters and e-mails and such and usually forget about them. When I did finally decide to start doing things with my profile I kind of had fun building it up and was having fun commenting and everything in various topics so I decided to stay.

I was looking for that line company feel once I hit Staff positions. That sense of Camaraderie, fellowship and sense of belonging. I found some of that, some awesome support, it is 'social media' so not the end all be all, but definitely a place I rest my head gear.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I honestly had no expectations. I had seen a post come across Facebook from RP, and wanted to see more. I signed in for my first time and would log in occasionally thereafter.

One day, I got engrossed in reading posts and responding.

The courtesy, respect, mentorship, brotherhood and support I found on a social media site was absolutely amazing, and I was hooked.

Since then, I have grown a network of friends and family who provide encouragement during rough times.

While I had no expectations from RP, I can definitely tell you that I am now greatful that I wanted to follow through on that RP post I saw on Facebook so long ago.

Hopefully the conversation will eventually shift from politics. A wealth of knowledge here from folks representing all of the military and civilian community. One can never understand others until you walk a mile in their shoes, and RP comes close to that.

Well Col Mikel Burroughs, for me, when I first signed up here, it was a whim of something to do at the time, I was still getting used to the whole internet for more than just games and chatting thing. Then I forgot all about it for like 2 years when a post on FB got me back into it. So, for the first time I logged in, no real expectations, but the second time, was to see if I could connect with some old friends. keep up with the real information going on around me, and maybe get some of the feeling that I had lost when I left the military. So, yes, it has met and in some cases exceeded my expectations. And while I have only come across a few of the people I served with, I was lucky in that they were some of the more important people to me, for which I am grateful. but I have also made some new friends.

I wanted to learn about my old battle buddies and reconnect with them. But what I got was a sense of family and purpose again COL Mikel J. Burroughs. Having come from a broken scary child hood, there was really no sense of those in my life before the military. Though I still search for my battle buddies, I have found new ones here that I never would have known without RallyPoint.
Every day is different, and everyday has a new meaning. Although we're not all hanging out and doing what soldiers do, RallyPoint has definitely put light where there once was casted shadows.
So ultimately, I learned I'm no longer a lone! We're just all spread out and ready to continue the fight if needed in all corners of the US.

Camaraderie, that lost connection I once had with my brothers whose since scattered the Earth. Community. To hear stories, share pain and grief for which I can make the focus of prayer. I know that there is a kinship between people that have served, and I kind of hoped that I might see some individuals that I'd served with here. As for me influencing anyone, no, I don't expect that I will. I'm a loose cannon and say what I think. Not a good thing most of the time, but others folks I've worked with seem to like that I tell the "brass" how things are. So here is a great place to vent about things too.

The ability to communicate with like minded vets and retirees and anyone else willing to listen to an old man vent. To see how my fellow retirees and vets are getting along with their lives. To agree with or disagree with, not to the point of being vicious but to voice an opinion contrary to some. To remember some good points long forgotten by an old man. To sympathize with those that have been there and done that and still have the nightmares of past ghosts, to let them know their not alone. To those that still have nightmares to open their hearts to the Lord God to ease their pains and sufferings. To let others know that I'm still alive and kicking, maybe not as high but still kicking, I will always stand an salute the flag but will always kneel before the cross. God bless all Vets, Retirees and Active Duty Personnel still serving no matter what branch of service.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I had a similar expectation to yours, I.E. was RP going to be just another in the growing list of Social Media Outlets. What I have experienced has been far better than any expectation could have been. The best part of RP to me is that people will challenge each other's position on a subject, but (mostly) will do so in a respectful manner, allowing a conversation about issues to occur. Yes it sometimes digresses, but that is not the norm. I have found that if advice is asked for, this community is most willing to offer it. From serious things like transition and re-enlistment to happy things like promotion and retirement to silly things like should I buy a 9MM or a .45 for personal defense or Harley or Honda for a touring bike are all topics I have seen covered in one manner or another. I have learned much about conflicts that I knew little about. I have seen posts from veterans who were there during some of those conflicts. I have also had RP members share resources that they use which I have in turn started using myself, taking RP beyond being a social media outlet, and making it a resource. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the sense of humor of many on this site I have found twisted and sick, just like my own, and RP is a good outlet for that as well. Instead of being met with the eye rolling and response of "inappropriate" I have been met with snarky comments and "Hey that reminds me of..." followed by something as bad or worse. It is great to have a such a diverse, informative, funny, and helpful resource.

I believed the site would be a social site and more professional because it was made up of military members. Since joining I have been more than satisfied with the topics, the answers from other vets and the comradery. It is nice to help others from time to time and it is nice to be helped or see a new view expressed on a topic you thought was dead years ago. We are fortunate to have fellow members who can help us expand our opinions and gain knowledge.

I didn't know what to expect really, a request was sent to me and I accepted, I just kinda lurked for a year or so. I read the subjects but didn't have a big interest, it wasn't until some of the subject matter became a part of my daily struggles in everyday life( PSTD, sleep disorders, depression, VA treatments, medicines and so on) so now I check my email whenever it chirps to see if the COL has sent a new response or just a message. I discovered rallypoint as it was mentioned in an article about CW3 Lindsey Muller that appeared in Military Times online. I assumed that it was just another social networking site but focused on a military audience but it is much more.

I have been out of the service since 1996, and didn't realize just how much I missed the comradery, sharing, mentoring and supporting fellow soldiers. So, in a way it was like coming home.

I hope to accomplish many things here and hope that my experiences will be helpful to the other soldiers and their families.

Saw popups in my FB feed and one day decided to check it out, since for one thing I am a history nut and thought it would provide some personal insight from other veterans on historical events. Was pleasantly surprised to find it included both vets and current members! AND, provided a forum for discussions. As well as Col Burroughs with his help for vets. And interesting that SM would seek advice across the entire spectrum of services and ranks.

Joining RallyPoint was another social avenue to learn and get to know military professionals. Although I was raised by an Army vet who went on to have a successful government career, I believe it is vitally important for strong communication between civilians and veterans.

RallyPoint is a great platform for those civilians who may not have the opportunity to interact with and/or possibly be intimidated by military professional(s).

I enjoy conversing on a number of subjects, and there are no shortage of them here. Occasionally I get a bit hot under the collar, and blow off some steam. But the vast majority of my experiences here on RP have been positive and constructive. Anymore I can not go a day without checking in to RP.

I was looking for a social media-type site where I could connect with other veterans and soldiers. I was in the reserves a long time and still miss the comradery of my fellow soldiers. So far on this site I have been in contact with some really sharp people that give good sound advice as well as good feedback to me concerning whats going on in today's military and with today's veterans. It's nice that all branches are involved so I get a broader perspective. I enjoy the site!

I originally joined in September 2013. I was not terribly interested, especially since the only Army E-5 rank available was SGT, which I was not. About a year later the notifications were still coming in by email and I decided to revisit RP, with the idea of getting a handle on the current military cultures. I had met some SMs in my travels and was interested in the changes that seem to happen over decades.

Finding that I could now be a SP5, and seeing some discussions that looked interesting and informative, I dived in. Now I know about fobbits and PT belts and other exotic things, and have been able to share a few bits of info and wisdom. Meanwhile i invited a small number of people, including my Battalion CO from RVN and some fellow veterans of the struggle in the '80s to get Vietnam Veterans reincorporated into society.

Still here, still reading, still occasionally emitting some crusty-old-man text.

Great question COL Mikel Burroughs. I was referred to Rally Point by a Wart Hog pilot, friend and former coworker. It was quickly evident the site was full active duty, retired and Veteran troops. The RP gave me the feeling of reconnecting with troops. I often miss the military way of life, the troops and our collective attitudes. I enjoy reading the site contents, questions and the "guys" responses (I consider female troops as part of the "guys"). I have also made some internet site "friends" and connections on the RP. I enjoy the Rally Point "Briefings" and reading the responses. If I think I have something to add or comment on a topic I pitch in. If not, I don't try to add my opinion on a topic I don't know about. I don't spend much time on a lot of the nonsense on Twitter and Face Book, so I am satisfied with what the RP gives me. Rally Point is a great site for me and my back ground.

I initially joined to have contact with other vets. That objective has been met and exceeded. I have not encountered anyone with whom I served, and that's ok. I also belong to the Army Retiree and Alumni Group, but for the most part, those people are much younger than I am. They are good, energetic people who always reach out to help one going through the steps to retirement or struggling with the VA claims process. We also pray for one another if someone is going through a particularly difficult time. I am glad to be able to do that, and am willing to do it here also. If anyone reading this does not believe, I respect that, and won't try to convert you unless you ask. I see a wide variety of subjects, from , "What do I do if PVT Snuffy disrespects me in formation?" to "Will being a veteran get me out of jury duty?" And, just like the military, there are people here from all over and every background. I really enjoy conversing with them/you all. COL, I particularly appreciate the effort you have made to bring us all together and keep us encouraged.

Finally, I wanted to engage in some back and forth on the news of the day with people who have had similar experiences to my own.......that happens on a daily basis, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Someone always has a point to be made, and nobody is shy about airing it out. And no matter how heated a particular discussion may get, in the end we all have a certain measure of respect for each other......because we all answered the call when it was our turn to do so. You can't get that on other sites.

First, I was just checking it out not thinking too much about it.
Now, I am retired, miss the service but am working as a government contractor in a position similar to a position I would have if I were still on active duty. So, now I see tremendously more value in the sense of networking and being prepared for my next career move. I was unprepared immediately upon my retirement, mostly due to my unwillingness to accept the change.
With the same resources, my outlook is different because my willingness to accept the situation changed.
So to conclude, networking, networking, and networking. Idea exchange and help pass on and learn new information. Situations change, and to be ready.

What I have gotten is a lot, lot more.
Great info on what I was looking for but things to help veterans out before, during and after VA medical, or benefits. Like me life as a retired veteran just a wealth of info.
And hearing the stories and debates of active members and is retirees putting out " two cents" worth.
I beam with pride knowing my torch has been passed to the next generation and seeing our young leaders grow using all these tools before them makes our military and our nation great!

Great question! I first heard of RP at my company as we were looking for innovative ways to recruit for a study involving active duty U.S. service members. It was described to me as the "LinkedIn for Military." I've been on the site almost a month, and have found it to be a positive experience.

But, I think it has turned out to be more, at least for me tat is. I have asked a few questions to help me with my career and with the help of some members gained a lot of info. I had a big struggle with whether or not to continue my service after 7 years of AD. In the end, I signed the paperwork to continue my service with the Reserves. When I first joined, I didn't know what to expect to be honest. I still am unsure what RP can really do for me personally. I do know that for me, it is way better than fb, in that I know that when I post ( no matter how mundane) it won't go unnoticed. Prime example. 17 years ago on 11Jul2000, I buried my dad, 15Jul'00 I turned 20, and 17Jul'00 I shipped off to my first duty station: the USS Cushing (DD985) out of Yokosuka, Japan. On the 11th of this month, I posted a beautiful yulogy on fb and got likes from my wife's family. My brother on the other had posted a picture of him lighting a pot-pipe and writes, dad this bowls for you, and my family responds to him, giving him the potty party. WTF. Here I know I am appreciated and accepted by all, and not just over looked. And that my brothers and sisters helps with my illnesses.

Way late on this post but I am going to post anyways. COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I joined in early 2013..soon after the site opened. I set up a profile for the most part. I didn't dive into RP until around Feb-Mar 2016 when I asked RP for what to expect in Korea from an Emergency Management perspective as I had never been prior to that. I got quite a bit of great feedback from then as well. Been engaged ever since I asked that important question!

I saw it as a way of possibly re-connecting with some of the men that I was stationed with. Or just have a connection with people with a military background.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I believe I saw rally point on a facebook ad a few years ago, so I joined to see what it was all about. When I first looked at it I was still in the military and I connected with 3 or 4 colleagues of mine and then to be honest I didn't do much else. I continued to get emails over the years and would check in every now and then. It wasn't until recently that I really to a good look at what Rally Point is and what I found was very impressive. Here I was thinking it was just a social media site for veterans but its much more than that. It is a community of military from all walks and civilians that support us. It is an accumulation of people that are focused in helping their brothers and making a difference in our communities through veterans. Rally Point is a site that is impressive now but is just barely scratching the surface of what it will become. I believe that when I look back in two years just like I am doing now I am going to be even more impressed at what this site will achieve.

Good Job and keep up the good work Rally Point and all the supporters who make this site great!

For me, Rally Point serves two purposes. One, get the word out that might take longer to get out through the proper channels as it generally does, i.e., via mouth, vice red taped regulations and policy. And two, to give some past experiences that might assist in those transitioning, that have transitioned, or just maybe provide someone with some insight that I have personally gone through so maybe they don't have to do the same!

I found RP via a post by an acquaintance on LinkedIn. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I had hoped I could connect to Marines from my former unit. What I have found is another platform to connect to others; most importantly, with others that may not share the same values and perspectives on everything, but shared the same love of Country and commitment to choose to serve and protect our families, friends, brothers in arms and the freedoms that many take for granted living in this great Country.

I came to RallyPoint looking to make friends with a group of people who could familiarize me with the culture of the military and to learn all I can about leadership. I also want to learn and grow as a person by discussing ideas and sharing tips for overcoming everyday obstacles.

I expected it to be normal social media to be honest. I was hoping to connect and learn from active military and vets. I also wanted to be able to see others stories and current events in our military. I have connected witb some but still hope to meet others.

I am not sure exactly what I wanted when I decided to join here. I do know I wanted something *NOT* facebook, maybe a chance to reconnect to friends, a platform where I could influence by example, and a place to blow steam once in awhile. Some weeks I am bored with this site, other weeks I can't seem to find time to do anything else...

I basically joined to (1) re-connect with old military buddies and (2) make new professional acquaintances and personal friends alike with other veterans and current servicemembers alike. And RP has not disappointed.

Two things: I joined to try and connect with Army buddies that I knew and worked with. In addition, to help those and inform those of the VA Benefits they earned while in Service. To be able to share that information and insight, since I worked there for 15 years, in hopes that someone may take that information, use it, and make a difference in their life.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I honestly had no idea what to expect. I stumbled across it only because a friend of mine referenced an article that had been mentioned here. I think I may have made a comment, don't really recall (btw, I have a perfect memory; what I don't have is perfect recall). I signed up just to see where it went. Don't even think I planned on staying that long. Then I was told I needed to verify my status, and I ignored it for a while because (1) I still didn't know if I was going to stay, so why go to the hassle, and (2) I thought it was just another group looking for personal information to do whatever with.

Add to that I am I cynic and a skeptic, so I didn't embrace it right off. I finally did verify my status, though still a little unsure of whether I really wanted to. However, I have been pleasantly surprised. I'm still fairly new, so still finding my way around, but I have been impressed with the depth and breadth of experience of the members of RP--both in the military and otherwise. There are some very bright and articulate individuals on this site. I don't agree with every position, of course, just as I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with me (well, I kinda do, but that's not going to happen).

The level of discourse on here seems to be far more civil than I've found on other sites, which has been refreshing. I have been impressed. And--it's brought back a lot of good memories of my time in uniform.

I doubt there's much I can add to this community, but I'll throw in my $.02 from time to time.

I found Rally Point completely by accident, i didn't know or have any expectations but I'm very glad to have found it. It's been uplifting for me and a comfort of sorts to know that I'm not alone in this. I've tried a couple times to connect with anyone that I served with in desert storm but haven't had any luck yet. Definitely not giving up on that.

I expected Rallypoint to be a Facebook for veterans. I was mistaken. I find there is a wealth of knowledge from the posters and those who respond. Unlike, Facebook I can find someone who been there, done that, and got the T-shirt.

I respected the way in which the topics were done and the respectful manner of the members in returning their thoughts and beliefs. I don't like to see something dumped out there and just begin an all out free for all with accusations and bad language. A chance to speak and be heard and respected even though your ideas may be different from the person before.

Honestly, my first appearance here was the result of following a link on a subject posted on this site which struck my interest. I don't remember what it was, and I've no real desire to look it up to reference it.

I used to not give a darn about social Q&A sites...until a few years back when I got started on one that turned out to be pretty good. Eventually I ended up a Community Leader on that site, helping to moderate it. There were quite often some good question and even more excellent discussions on a wide variety of subjects.

Unfortunately, that site eventually shut down.

After posting my comments to that first question here, I kept popping back to check the site out and see what types of questions were being posted, and how people were doing in posting their answers/comments. I found it to be interesting, and I found the people to be rather well versed in a lot of their postings.

And the fact that it's nearly all military related gives it a flavor unlike the other site I used to be on. Kinda refreshing, in a way, because for the most part the people posting here actually know what they're talking about, will cite their references when necessary, and it also seems they're pretty open to counter view points and even corrections.

In short, pretty professional for a Q&A site. And I like that.

Like most veterans, what I missed most was the "fraternity" that is found only among veterans. RP is a really good place to reconnect with other vets. People speak the same language, share common experiences, and understand things, and see things from a veterans perspective. A lot of civilians wish they could be a part of what we have.
Another vet wrote about this in a very good piece. This may be a little long, but I think it is worth the time.
He wrote..... I had an old Army buddy of mine come to town on business yesterday and we met at an upscale bar/restaurant for drinks. Sitting at a table on the crowded patio, the conversation naturally turned to Iraq and Afghanistan and our shit stories from there, good and bad. It wasn't long before I noticed that pretty much all other conversation on the patio had stopped, and everyone was listening to our bullshit, talking about stuff that only combat vets share with each other, and speaking the language that only vets speak to one another. Two old vets swapping war stories. These were wealthy, successful people, but I could see in their faces that they envied what we had been through, and the memories, and the swagger that they will never have.
To be honest, I felt sorry for the men there. I really did. They will never know the hum of a bullet passing by fired in anger ;they will never know the adrenaline rush of being in battle ;they will never know the wave of heat from an explosion ;they will never know the callousness of making fun of the enemy dead; and they will never know the bonds of brotherhood forged in war. No amount of money, or financial success will ever be able to change that. They will never know what it is like to have walked among giants as one of them.
Shakespeare probably put it best :

When I joined Rally Point, it was in hopes of connecting with some of the people I served with. I honestly lost touch with everyone I served with in Bamberg, Germany, Ft. Hood, TX, Berlin, Germany, and Fort BH, IN. This was due to having PTSD for so many years that was un-diagnosed and caused me to hide in the mountains of Washington state for nearly 15 years.
What has happened since I have joined this forum is that I have connected with some great people that are doing things to help our brothers and sisters. This has given me hope and inspired me to work even harder in my field.

I wanted comradity with others who served. I was surprised to find lots of vets with the same mindset that I have although not all of us agree, but thats OK. All posts and opinions matter. We all served and thats the point.

When I first joined I saw RP as a way of contin My service through this site. I have met a lot of Military members and have learned from from Him or Her. I have learned that every Military on RP has had a wonderful story to tell.
