The good ones, huggies or parents choice. Can be used for cleaning weapons and the body as well as the bum! Gloves only go so far, the hand warmers can be stuck in a pocket or the palms of the gloves. Blistex, or Carmex for chapped lips and noses from blowing them. Carmex work wonders for a raw nose! Cards, from the kids or anyone in general! a good Thanksgiving card and or Christmas cards from the kids warms the heart of a deployed parent or older sibling! I was always told KISS. They were basically advertisement kits for Gillette. Shaving Cream, Razors and other hygiene stuff plus a treat (M & M's and Skittles if I recall right). There was a nice note explaining how Gillette supported the troops..etc. Corporate Care Packages, in my opinion, can be useful and nice, but let's be honest. Top on his list was HOT SAUCE, the hotter the better to eat MREs. Next was snacks from home that we carefully chose for the weather. He was from CA so one special treat was marinated artichokes, which he said he enjoyed with crackers during breaks in firefights, as they reminded him of home. We sent hot sauce, crackers, power bars, hot sauce, hard candy, nabs (Southern for peanut butter cheese crackers), hot sauce (hot nabs are a delicacy of 911 dispatchers in Guilford County), jerky (especially the hot kind), homemade cookies and cookie packs. We also sent toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, baby powder, baby wipes, foot powder, bandages (they had lots of foot issues), socks from Thorlo (they have a package you can buy to send to military personnel for a special price on their website - great socks and a great company). The most important thing we sent was "Letters from Home", a recording of everyone we collected stuff from sending them messages of encouragement, personal messages, and then my niece who was his fiance at the time added special messages for him at the end about life at home. She recorded her day, like a vlog, and took him with her by describing what she was doing, then ended with a good night (be nice). He loved his package, and so did his team. I agree that magazines or a book they might like would be cool. The shipping didn't cost nearly as much as I thought and some people donated for shipping. We asked for donations on Facebook, had a place to collect stuff, then would package it up and send it off. The last one went a few weeks before the end of they time there. The commitment included email from us about stuff at home while they were in a bus driving around the middle east seeing the sights, eating strange foods and meeting new people. Most important the people who helped formed a prayer warrior team and weekly were reminded to pray for them each day. Their entire team returned to Bragg twice, Eglin once with a few injuries. I really believe in the power of doing this for someone deployed, and just found out tonight that the son of a friend will be going next month to the middle east, and know the daughter of a friend who will be going to Turkey in a few weeks. I try to remind people always that our troops are still there, and it's hot, dry, cold, sandy, away from home. Not bad, considering that she's been at it for four years... at least she got rid of that horrid boyfriend she had. Oh, the bruises she tried to hide were terrible. He ended up with three years in the slammer for it.
Tom went to the city yesterday, and saw that new "artwork" that folks have been talking about. He wasn't very impressed. He interviewed with the hiring manager at the tallest building in the city - on the 31st floor! I hope he gets the job. Makes me wonder too about what the Military does supply our men and woman. I have a nephew who is deployed in Korea and he asked his mother to send him a blanket because he was cold. I told his mother, my sister, that the Military supplies blankets to their soldiers and she told me that they don't. Beats the shit out of me. All I know is that the Maine Corps supplied us with everything we needed, including blankets and that poncho liner was a life saver in Nam. Hell, I still have a poncho liner that was issued to me in 1970 and now I carry it everywhere in my Vet. It's a great beach blanket! Books, old movies that 95% of our military is never heard and then some cookies and snacks and what not. The military does not supply that stuff for us so typically we do end up using the packages just so we don't have to spend money to buy it. Not all but most locations have some kind of BX, PX or small field store. However we get a ton of use out of the games. Although I will say my last deployment we probably had 50 packs of regular playing cards for 10 people. More regular brands and kind of daily "luxuries" that you can't get, except for being in the real world for lack of a better phrase, for instance monster drinks are huge with many people however most of the BXs are stocked with them now or PX. We eat a ton of popcorn. However not all places have microwaves to do that unless you're on the Air Force Base then we have it. So when you are thinking about care packages it would be suggested to go find something about the installation you were sending the materials to or the unit to see what they actually need. Many of the forward operating base like the the Marine units, the Army Post are limited in their capabilities what they can use, what's going to work with their location, they can take , keep fresh. However, most of your Air Force bases have all those luxuries. For any of us though at least in my experience getting the homemade cookies things like that the little small things that kind of remind you of home or your holidays the traditions mean much more. So it really depends on first off what military force are you sending the packages to, what is their location, or approximate idea of location, what are their needs, is it a well known well supplied base, or is it a forward operating base, one that nobody really hears about, something small and basically the middle of enemy territory... whatever the case may be. Another consideration is are they living in tents are they living out of their vehicles are they living in hard billets? That's all going to affect what is actually needed and wanted for those locations. However, whatever people sends us is appreciated and made use of. I'm not a big fan of cookies to begin with, but it seemed every care package had at least two boxes. Pretty soon every office had a "help yourself" rack with boxes to give away. That was over five year ago, though, so it may have changed. Actually, the only things needed are things the exchange runs short of, and those shortages only lasted a few weeks. One time razors another time socks, that sort of thing. Never, ever put bars of soap or detergent in the same box as food. The soap taste, smell and oder of soap works its way into everything in the box. Any food in that box becomes toxic and must be thrown away. If you try to eat it you can get sick. While we were deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005 we received many boxes like that. We threw out hundreds of food items. I tried to eat a few choice items but it was like eating soap. Please pack any type of soap or tabbaco items seperatly. Never in the same box as food. In our Squad we had kinda a tradition. Somebody got a care package we all shared it. It was just one more thing to carry. Consume it on the spot. As for personal Hygiene items, the squad got a weekly PX box that had a can of shaving cream a pack o disposable razors, tooth paste, a couple of tooth brushed to replace the guys own tooth brush that got used for weapons cleaning. Facial hair in the field was just ignored and since we were always in the field many of us had grown Fu-Man-Chu's or mustaches . This was before the days of handy wipes and all that other good stuff. We all preferred to smell like the bush. Charlie could smell Old Spice or sensed shaving creme a mile away. Smelly soap, Infantry don't need no frigging soap. Towels were worn around the neck to keep 7.62 ammo belts for the M-60 from chaffing your neck. One rather odd thing that we were always asking for but couldn't be from supply and had to have girlfriends send were full size Kotex. The best cleaning pad for an 81mm Mortar or a four duce mortar there is. He asked for Sports Illustrated, chips and dried fruit, so in my twice a month boxes, I send the latest editions of SI, dried fruit, chips and other things like the baby wipes, hand warmers, snacks and the things I liked to get when I was deployed - silly things. At Christmas I sent him little Lego sets, blow up punching balloons, silly string, things they can have fun with. Next will be a little pack of Valentines like the kids use in school, some valentine decorations, candy, etc. I also make cards, so I will include 25 or so handmade cards with envelopes for various occasions like birthdays, missing you, etc. that my soldier can use to write home and he can share with his friends. These are quality cards I also sell, not just stickers slapped on cardstock. My husband works at a school so I ask him for letters from the kids as well as a letter from me in each box too.

Homefront Hugs USA | Where No Hero is Forgotten

January 1, 2017WELCOME KIDS & TEENS! Flying with the airlines, I had a girl scout cookie connection. I could have many, many, many, many cases of cookies free just had to pay shipping . My Marine connection led me to a lovely Gold Star mom whom wanted to offer shipping cost to anyone who would send packages. She ran a non profit for postage only. God Bless Her! My sweet Marine Son he always waited for everyone else to take what they wanted then he would partake.
I solicited a weapons company to send cleaning kits.
