I'm really interested in chemistry, it's been my favorite class and I'm good at it, but I've been told so many times that it's extremely difficult in college and most end up with relatively lower GPA's ranging 2.8-3.2. However, major is not necessarily the deciding factor. My peers are from various majors, not just STEM. The Oder of Merit List (OML) at your school of choice and the slots available for that MOS are what matter most. Focus on being the best student and cadet that you can be to enhance your chances of becoming a 67J. Best of luck to you! It also has a longer service obligation than the other branches.
It’s a different process entirely to branch as a MSC/67J for a medevac unit in the Reserve Compoent. If that is something you consider, it’s worth a different post/question.
There isn’t a specific major that is looked for in ROTC for branching Aviation, OML is weighted in favor of STEM, but not enough to make up for a low GPA or low PT score.
Overall, despite my initial joke, major in something you will do well in. Work hard on PT and at Advanced Camp, and a high OML score will have more to do with getting a flight seat than anything. Your description was fairly detailed, though the STEM term is frequently a cliche now, and more of a buzzword, though I understand the basis for its use, certainly. Your interest in chemistry is valuable to kmow, however, you should give much, much more detail. I've seen numerous such questions similar to yours on here, and I generally wind up suggesting the same aooricpach for the most part, doing an extremely thorough biographical sketch so far as you and/or your family would want you to send in. There were several aspects you hadn't mentioned, however, given your interest, one would assume youre obvioisly aware of certain things. Specifically, are you JROTC, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), Boy Scouts, Naval Sea Cadets, or other comparable groups. If so, how far have you gone with them, and if Boy Scouts, what merit badges. Next, list explicitly, so far as you or your family think suitable, your exact courses taken, incl any AP level material, all math, all science, wall comp sci (CS), all IT material, how much software youre involved with, what explicit languages, if any, you've written in, what hobbies, e.g., amateur radio, model aircraft/cars/boats, esp if radio controlled (R/C), model rocketry if allowed or encouraged by you and/or your family. Next, have you looked at vocational high schools, for explicit programs, e.g., aircpframe and powerplant, nursing, med lab tech, EKG tech, phlebotomy, electronics, comp sci (CS), IT, etc. Would you want to use such a vocational school, all school districts in the US have them for high schools, I did use one as a junior and senior half a day, seven days a week, for technical electronics. Next, what are your GPAs, PSAT, and SAT/ACT scotes.? HVa you done ASVAB yet, and, of so, what result, if you and/or your family fan have you say. Next, have you done any pilot training of any kind, e.g., glider in CAP, Explorers after Boy Scouts, or fixed/rotary wing? Have you done any EMT level training at all? Fire department youth groups? Police, fire, or EMS Explorers? Those are the kinds of things that knowing would help is help you, so far as possible. I wasn't flight, I didn't use he aero club where I was which was dumb, in retrospect also, I was Army ROYC on a 3 yr scholarship that I'd gotten in my 2nd yr undergrad, I finished two years of it, though not the last year, I went USAF OTS instead which then was at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, now at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL. I couldn't go pilot as I wore glasses, also, USAF nav school, or UNT, at thepat time had a 20/100 minimum, whereas NFO the Navy equivalent had 20/200 minimum even with glasses, USAF also allowed glasses, though their UNT was stricter visually, which I'd always thought odd, as one might've expected carrier landings to be more visually demanding. I did do the med eval for NFO while in as a line USWF elec engr (EE), tpand rid get passed, but was never able to interservice to Navy. I'd also wanted clinical really badly, however, I handled going that way totally wrong for the simple reason I had zero clue what I was doing, didn't kmow what to ask, didn't kmow who to ask, and totally bollixed it up as a result. Also, I went in prematurely, before getting a PhD or clinical doctorate, my next younger brother and I were raised to it by our Dadz who had zero clue what he was getting us both into, I'm afraid, he'd been Navy enlisted, a Grumman TBM folding wing turboprop fighter carrier based plane aircraft mechanic, noncombat during the Korean War in the Caribbean deploying to the USS Block Island occasionally. My next younger brother was USMMA Kings Point, I nearly went SUNY Maritime College, I'll tell you about those, as well as other programs you're likely to not have yet encountered. Let me send this now, then I'll try to send more, meanwhile, try to do the bio sketch, however, ask your family, always, dont just do this asking here without speaking with them, doing this is inextricably intertwined with your family, it's one of those major life altering events, the most life altering, beyond !arriagez beyond college, beyond anything else in your life, I assure you, I'm not saying that to dissuade, merely to try to enlighten and inform, honest. Explain what jobs you have, full or part time, how many hours a week you work, what type of work, how long, also, so far as you or your family would have you explain, that also is useful for all of here to know to try to help you to the maximum extent possible. I wasn't enlisted prior to going in, that in many ways hindered !e, as I had zero reference to compare to, once I went in commissioned, I'll suggest other things, depending on where you are, like the State Defense Forces (SDFs), the state militaries that supplement the Army and It Natl Guard. There's also Reserve, or Guard, which could let yoy possibly pay for a state college or community college, I'll also suggest certain external or online degree programs that might be worth your looking at, however, always, always, always, with your family, never ever on your own, OK? Trust me, your family is inevitably part of your doing this, they need to know all you look at amd/or thinomof doing, OK? Try to do that bio sketch, make it as detailed as your family might allow, I'd ne eager to hear more, this is and can be an extremely good place for advice, however, you must, must, !UST, research all services, not just Army, all of them. And René!Ber something, it's not about so much what you want, or where, as who wants you, not the other way around. There are aspects to this that are a job, there are aspects that are most definitely NOT a mere job, the day to day, that exists, however, youre a public servant when youre in, no different than an elected official, youre expected to cooperate cheerfully and enthusiastically at all times, to volunteer, you function while in is to help your unit, and, most importantly, you'd ne there to serve, not ne served, OK? I hope that was of ise, try to send more, I'll try to send you things I think you and your family might have an interest in your seeing, OK? I didn't mean to overwhelm, and I fathom your enthusiasm, I had it as did my next younger brother, believe me, I've been there, honest, however, it mustn't be done impulsively, or in undue haste, OK? Do you want college first? Do you want to go straight in? Those are things you need to think about, you'd be expected to function college level from the moment you'd be in, all military programs, in the main, are run at college level,l I'll send you stuff for you to read about that aspect, OK? As I said, I hope that all helps, I'd be most eager for your thoughts, and hope all that wasn't all that totally overwhelming, OK? The Army doesn’t care what you major in as long as you graduate. Getting aviation is hard. As for 67J. That’s medical service. Once you branch medical service you apply for aviation as apposed to being branched aviation from the start. If you just want to fly I would recommend going warrant. My daughter is one of about six electrical engineers graduating from West Point this May. Her assigned branch; yea you guessed it- Artillery. I was in flight school with folks who had degrees in everything from PoliSci to Mech-E. The thing to bear in mind is that aviation is a technical field requiring high core competencies in mathematics, physics, systems, navigation, meteorology, fluids, electrical engineering...etc...etc. If you want to make aviation a life-long career,I'd suggest an engineering major; you will need that background for advanced pipelines like TPS or the astronaut program (if not doctorate level degrees by that point). If you're looking at your future post- military...remember that much will change for you personally and professionally in the years it will take you to fulfill your dream of flight. If as a former rotary-wing aviator, you decide you want to be a medical doctor...I had a flight surgeon once who had started out flying F-14s. However, I would assume it a safe bet that whatever pre-med you may have completed before entering flight-training, it may be challenging to just "pick up where you left off" seven to ten years later. During my time in flight school, more than once I heard an instructor advising a student that he didn't care what they taught him at (name your civilian flight training), this was the way the Navy wanted him to do it and he was there to learn the Navy way. Although the principles of flight, are the same, there is a huge philosophical difference between civil and military aviation. My advice would be to select a major that interests you and might be oriented more toward your medical inclinations. The great majority of military officer specialties have training programs that assume student ignorance of the specialty and base their selections upon demonstrated academic success in any area, psychological profiles, integrity, desire and the needs of the service. The screening was brutal the washout rate in the first few months was well over 40-50% Honor code took another 5-10%. This program provided the Aircrew for WWII thru the mid 60’s. We had a better retention rate, for a career, than any other program including the service academies, most of us retired as regular officers, Majors and Lt Col. the Military and flying were our lives, that’s what it takes to be a Pilot or Navigator and that’s the level of dedication the county needs. What matters is your placement on the OML and the required tests to be an Aviator (SIFT), not the field of study for your degree. Since overall GPA matters, factor that in your decision making process, but pick something you are interested in. If you aren't interested, you are less likely to care. Think about what fields you may be interested in pursuing and if the degree would help further that outside the military if you determine you do not wish to continue outside your initial obligation. Before I continue I just wanna day that I am not a pilot yet but I am aspiring to be a helo pilot just like yourself. I’m currently a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. As far as what you should major in, if you’re gonna apply to become a military pilot in any branch, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it simply doesn’t matter what degree you have. Many Marine, Navy and even Army pilots tell me that a lot of their classmates and even them selves had complete BS degrees that have nothing to do with aviation like history or humanities. In the Army they also have a program called “High School to Flight school”. This program allows for Anyone (not just high School students) to go straight in with no degree and they’ll train you to fly as a warrant officer instead of a commissioned officer (2Lt, 1Lt, Cpt, etc). I myself am working on a general studies degree so that I may become a Naval Aviator myself. Hope this answers your question, if not let me know! Check Pilot, Dual MOS as an Aviator and an ATC officer, ...THEN....3 yr. tour as a TW-5 Primary and Intermediate Instructor, Stan. Board, Safe for Solo Check Airman, Problem Student Evaluator,Maint. Check Pilot,....THEN..... 3 Army aircraft qual. schools, Aviation Warrant Officer Advanced Course, Aviation Officer Advanced Course, US Army Aviation Safety School 1, rated as both a Rotary Wing and a Fixed Wing Pilot....THEN..... 25 years at United Airlines, 16 of them as a Captain, over 20,000 accident/incident free hours in every part of the Globe.......It is my personal opinion that your major means nothing. Have basic High School math skills, and a mechanical background similar to your basic teen age motor head so you understand systems classes, good hand/eye coordination, and balance, and LEARN TO SWIM. I'm not for sure, but I believe that admission to the Navy Flight School now requires some private time. Get all of that when you can, maybe work the ramp at a FBO close to your school in trade for some seat time. I would not really worry about Embry-Riddle and stuff like that, there no broads. Have a great time in college, scratch for all the private time you can get, screw your brains out, but remain single, watch your health, the guys in Pensacola will freak over a zit on your ass. If you pick a school with a fair amount of action, join the Naval ROTC, if you don't really care about hard PT and hot women join the Air Force ROTC, and don't forget to graduate. Although I am a die hard Marine Aviator at heart, If I could do it all over from the start, I would go Navy, screw them on tight, and get ready for the time of your life. For some reason I assumed that you were some male senior in High School A total lack of situational awareness on my part.
