What do the S1 and G1 designations stand for?

What do the S1 and G1 designations stand for? Can anyone recommend any web resources for reference for the different military designations? Some of it is still new to me.

These are staff sections and positions in the Battalion or Brigade Headquarters. S1 - Personnel, S2 - Intelligence, S3 - Operations, S4 - Logistics, S5 - Civil Affairs, S6 - Communications. You can reference FM 41-10 for detailed by section info. The S in S1 means Staff Position. The G in G1 stands for general staff position. When I got my first General Staff Job as G6 SGM (General Staff Communications), I did not know what each General Staff section did by their numbers, with the exception of the ones I had dealt with on a regular basis. During the first staff meeting at special troops BN they had section plates in front of them so I wrote them all down for future reference. I can still remember G 1-9 but I am willing to bet the numbers have gone higher since I retired. Here are the ones I remember off the top of my head. G1 personnel, manning, admin, G2 intelligence, security, G3 Operations, G4 Logistics, G5 Plans, G6 Communications, G7 Training and or Combat Engineers, G8 Finance and resource management, G9 civil or public affairs.

Sir, Long story short they are the same composition in a sense however S1-S6 are affiliated with Brigades commanded by Field Grade Officers While the G's works for GO's namely Division.

S1 = Administrative at the Company/Battalion/Brigade level. G1 is the same at the Division (or higher) level.

S-1 is Supply Department 1st Division. G-1 is Weapons Department 1St division. Not sure what S-1 handled but G-1 Weapons Handling (Flight Deck, Forklift shop and AWSE Aviation Weapons Support Equipment. At least in the Navy lol I hope that helps!
