The S in S1 means Staff Position. The G in G1 stands for general staff position. When I got my first General Staff Job as G6 SGM (General Staff Communications), I did not know what each General Staff section did by their numbers, with the exception of the ones I had dealt with on a regular basis. During the first staff meeting at special troops BN they had section plates in front of them so I wrote them all down for future reference. I can still remember G 1-9 but I am willing to bet the numbers have gone higher since I retired. Here are the ones I remember off the top of my head. G1 personnel, manning, admin, G2 intelligence, security, G3 Operations, G4 Logistics, G5 Plans, G6 Communications, G7 Training and or Combat Engineers, G8 Finance and resource management, G9 civil or public affairs.
