I always tried to work closely with my branch manager to find assignments that stuck a good balance between personal and professional success (not always an easy balance to maintain! LOL!) I would say choice #1 is out unless you enjoy taking a gamble. Choice #2 would have very limited potential; open positions do not necessarily mean the position is available for assignment (could already be an individual on assignment, could be a low priority fill.. etc.). Option 3 is an excellent choice if you are wanting a special duty assignment, especially if you haven&#39;t had one yet. Option 4, in my opinion, is best for any Army SSG and below with under 10 years (not that others couldn&#39;t use it as well). If I were to recommend it would be talk to your Career Counselor first, even if you do want to volunteer/apply for a special duty assignment. They have the most up to date info on most programs. Then meet with the S1 strength manager to see what assignments are available. Cross check what's available with the assignments I need and then sit down with household 6 to ensure she is aware of where we need to go and narrow choices down to top 3. Then send a request to my branch manager asking for 1 of those 3 requisitions. Provide most recent ERB and last 3 NCOERs to support the request and then PRAY! If it's time to ask for a nominative position (EO, IG, Drill, Recruiter, Instructor, AC-RC, Defense Attache, etc..) then research AR 614-200 to see if I qualify and submit nomination packet. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 12 Jun 2014 01:15:33 -0400 2014-06-12T01:15:33-04:00 Response by 1SG Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 12 at 2014 1:22 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-do-you-do-when-you-re-nearing-the-end-of-an-assignment?n=151876&urlhash=151876 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Also, your career counselor can only help if you are trying to get an assignment as part of a reenlistment. Your primary choice is your Professional Development NCO (PDNCO) who works as or with your assignment manager at HRC. Don't get me wrong, Career Counselors are AWESOME people! But sometimes you need advice from within your career field. Seek out a senior NCO, like your MENTOR. Everyone should have a MENTOR!
