Prior to the ruck, a protein bar, and on the ruck, I generally drank about 70% water and the rest Powerade so electrolytes weren't depleted by the end of it. In any case, water, light snacks out of an MRE is what I used to do, and limited my Soldiers to. A twelve mile ruck should be able to be completed well within 4 hours, so a whole lot of food/snack should not be necessary. I don't even think it was allowed. I might bring a pack of freeze dried apples but I probably wouldn't break it out for a 12 mile hump unless it there was a lot of cross compartment (hilly terrain) movement.<br /><br />You should never put anything other than water in your canteen.
