Our number is small but the need to this nation has always been great. We were paying a price then and many are still paying it now. Poor health care for veterans, and on the bottom of the pole on so much more. And this week-end those that pay all should not be forgotten. I loved it. The thing I enjoyed the most about my time in the military was the weapons training. Using a firearm is something I had never done before the military.

Now the thing that meant the most to me was the camaraderie that I got from being in the Marine Corps. There's honestly nothing like it in civilian circles which is why I continue to work with Marines to still get that feeling. Not sure if "enjoyed" is accurate. While in situations that were dangerous, ie combat, I learned that I am now a coward for being fearful. I had, for many years, thought that if I felt fear that meant I was a coward. Funny where that came from. That was preached into my life by my father and my maternal grandfather. It took some convincing but eventually I learned that we all experienced fear, furthermore cowardice is a condition of how one responds to that fear. That lesson, which took a long time to get into my heart, showed me that I need not cower in my corner of the world reserved for cowards. Might not be a big deal to some folks on here but to me it was probably the most important life lesson I took away from my time in the Army. (Vietnam & Korea Era) Otherwise, the brotherhood, deep bonding connection with not only my closest buddies, but to a wider area as well, such as battery and battalion, maybe even wide range of people. Along that same line, I have found over the years that I can now meet a man and know instinctively who the veterans are (meaning my own age group.) I learned to trust and allow myself to be trusted and, indeed, be a trustworthy person. No school will teach that. Many Korea and Vietnam vets say things like: "I graduated from the University of South Vietnam" or "...the University of Korea.) A joke, yes and no. Any of us that spend time in those areas during the 1960's all understand what that means. I am sure men and women from all eras have similar feelings as us old guys do. It is something the military creates in the mind, spirit and soul of all veterans. The camaraderie, knowing that the man or woman next to me had my 6, as I had theirs. Now that I'm out, I have a group where Veterans who suffer from PTSD can come and have fun, and bash on branches, but when anyone has a bad moment, we drop EVERYTHING and help them out.
