I'm sorry MSgt Michael Durkee, but you've failed to follow the instructions.
Snoopy's Sopwith Camel was a WWI aircraft.
Good effort, however!

It's interesting how most votes are quickly cast in favor of the Mustang and the Corsair. I am drawn to agree inasmuch as they appear to me (and most people, I suppose) as the most visually attractive designs. However, when judging the best aircraft, you must begin with criteria. The one that had the longest range: Mustang (though not as maneuverable as the enemy fighters, it had to depend on diving speed and durability for its fighting advantage). For speed, the Mustang is near the top, but the German Messerschmidt Me 309 was faster by 30 mph. For brute force and fire power, the P47 Thunderbolt and the Douglas A-1 Skyraider are tops. Neither will win prizes in a beauty contest, but the pilots loved them.
Ultimately, for enemy kills, no other aircraft approaches the Gruman F4F-4 Wildcat.

CPT Jack Durkish - After my first post I was thinking about the Messerschmidt I know it was suppose to be a great aircraft, like everything else the Germans made at that time. Tiger tanks as an example.
Another aircraft that will never win a beauty contest but is/was an amazing aircraft is my beloved A-6 Intruder. Sky Pigs rule!

Flight of the Intruder is one of my favorite war films and it also features the Douglas Skyraider in a climatic scene. The Skyraider, I suppose, was the predecessor of the Intruder. From the underside, the wings looked like flight was an afterthought when you saw all the munitions it carried.

CPT Jack Durish - The A-6's wingspar is a single titanium extrusion, I believe. That is what gives it such great wing loading capacity. I also love the heck out of that movie. Especially, that same scene where William DeFoe's character is popping smoke for Sandy to bring the pain.
