I know a little about the Statue of Liberty, but did you know it's modeled after an Egyptian Muslim woman? I was doing research when I found out about this little known fact. What do you know about it? PFC (Join to see) SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL SSG(P) James J. Palmer IV aka "JP4" LTC Stephen F. CPL Dave Hoover SGT David A. The statue represents the hope of the immigrant but also expresses an ethic of refuge. People should understand that even during the days of Ellis Island we routinely denied entry and established quotas. People are all bent out of shape regarding our current situation, and point to the Statue of Liberty. Yet either selectively or by ignorance they don't understand the history of the issue at hand and would rather not bother to consider the strain on our social systems.

Respectfully, I’m pretty sure the Statue of Liberty is actually a figure of Roman liberty goddess Libertas.
While it’s designer, Frederic Bartoldi, had proposed a similar statue in Egypt using a traditional Egyptian female farmer (not necessarily a Muslim), the Egyptians decided to build the (still standing) Port Said lighthouse, instead.

A fun fact about the Statue is a few years back, the post office released Statue of Liberty stamps. The image they (mistakenly) used? A photo from the replica statue from New York-New York, in Las Vegas. And then had to pay the sculptor of that statue a few million for copyright infringement.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - I’m glad the folks at indy100 are verifying as correct what I stated.
You wrote, “but did you know it's modeled after an Egyptian Muslim woman...”. Well, not really. Essentially, what happened was Bartoldi came up with some sketches/ideas for a similar monument for Egypt, and it would have used an Egyptian Peasant woman as it’s image.

When the Egyptians rejected his idea (they built the lighthouse, instead), Bartoldi went back to the drawing board. Still loving the idea of big*ss statues, he changed up a few things, Egyptian woman went out the window, and Roman Libertas came in the front door.

The Statue of Liberty isn’t modeled after an Egyptian Muslim woman. At best, the idea for the Statue was loosely based on the proposed idea of a statue of an Egyptian woman that was never even seriously contemplated to be built in its’ desired nation.

See attached an image of an ancient Roman plate depicting Libertas. It is modeled (virtually copied) from authentic Roman images of Libertas, to include the stoic nose, head wreath and flowing robe.

If you disagree or have any other information, please explain. Best of luck

Much controversy surrounds the actual model for the Statue of Liberty, SSG(P) (Join to see). Marie Bartholdi, the mother of sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, is also a person who is thought to be the model for the face of the Statue of Liberty.
