I know many of you have had more training in these areas than I have. I am looking to put together some "go-bags" for my family in case of an emergency situation, mainly natural disasters. Any information or advice would be helpful. I know some of the basics, but I will defer to your advice. Thanks!

I like the 10 C concept. You can pick the specifics based on your setting or circumstances you can find yourself most likely to be in.

1. Cutting - Saw, axe, machete, knife, etc

2. Combustion - Flint and stone, lighter, etc

3. Cordage - 550 cord, rope, etc

4. Container - Capped bottle, hydration pack, etc filled with purified water

5. Cargo - pack, bag, etc

6. Compass - gps, map, etc

7. Cover - tarp, tent, etc

8. Candle - flashlight, glowstick, etc

9. Combination - multi-tool

10. Cloth - bandana, hat, etc

And I like to add a few more to the main list

11. Chow - MRE, canned food, etc

12. Care - First aid kit, trauma kit, etc

Maybe it should be the 12 C's

Excellent post SSgt Fair. I've never heard of this type of thing being broken down into a list of C's, but this looks marvelous.

Consider your H2O options. Not just full containers, but means of collection and how you'll purify or filter it.
I'd plan on having some for immediate consumption and then think about sustainment. Chlorine bleach or iodine tablets work quite well to disinfect clear water. I have no recommendations for filters. Just remember that they can break. Depending on where you live and time of year, maybe huge plastic sheets weighted down with a rock in the middle.
These can be used to collect rain, collect moisture, or distill water from sea / brackish water.

All you NEED is a pocket knife, 550 cord, 100 mph tape and a flashlight and the flashlight is actually just a personal luxury. I must say however, I like the SPOT3 idea SGT Newman suggested.
