Dear Colleagues,

Given limitations on pay increases, I find this most recent news report deeply troubling.

I think we need to organize more effective lobbying efforts on behalf of servicemembers.

This is just another salvo in congress' much misguided but continued war on military benefits!! I'm fearful that we have not yet endured the worst of this, but am certain that if much more work is done to dismantle the benefits we' re earned over the last 10 years, we will soon be back to dismal situation we experienced during the Clinton administration. More than just a tad frustrating given that congress has yet to adjust its own obscene benefit package down to match what the rest of us receive.

If you read between the lines they will make it where going to the commissary is the same price as your local supermarket. Once that happens less people and Soldiers will go to the commissary. Less people means less money.

Eventually they will shut down and it will be because the military members didn't use the resource (blame rests on us) and it became a black hole for funds so they had to be shut down (only option). If played correctly you can close the commissaries and still come out as the good guy for making it happen.

Now the better question is who in Congress will vote yes on this? It is an election year and I think many will be scared to vote yes. Look how quickly the COLA retirement decision back fired and how quickly it was "fixed" even though when everyone voted they knew what it meant.

I am curious to see how this goes.

I hope they close down every CONUS commissary outside of a high cost of living area and rent out the space to make more money.
The savings apply to meat and a few select items. They are done away with through a combination of the surcharge and the frequent absence of generic brand items that cost less than the "bulk discount" price the commissary charges for the brand name equivalent.

After crunching the numbers, I started only visiting the commissary once a month in order to save a few pennies per pound on ground beef. Most of the Soldiers I had got a better deal going off post onto the economy.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
