I'm a fan fan of "practice makes perfect", maybe because I played softball and various musical instruments growing up and that's what my coaches and teachers said. But practice doesn't always make perfect, sometimes practice simply makes proficient.

Can someone do a task with great success without much practice?, there is always that possibility. But, it's practicing a task that allows us to preform at a consistently higher level when we need to. In some scenarios I think practicing a task allows people to perform under pressure without panicking, such as an EMT at the scene of an accident.

It's right up there with "fake it 'til you make it" Maybe not 100% true, but more than good enough most of the time.

No, practice often won't make perfect. But it'll make a damn sight better than wishing.

If, while drilling, we don't try to get it right, we won't get it right when it really matters. And yet, in many cases, repetition will add to our learning. We self-correct.

Having someone guiding us, coaching us, looking over our shoulder and adjusting us, that's where practice really starts to pay off.

I use it with my brother all the time. Though I keep asking when he's going to stop his practicing and actually be a dentist.
