We check all of the "standard" diversity blocks (race, religion, gender, etc.), but we do not exist in meaningful numbers across all of society.

Previous generations of veterans, ESPECIALLY the greatest generation, but largely true in the Boomers, too, had people from across ALL of society serving. This was in large part due to the draft, especially for the Boomers and Vietnam, I am aware. But as we moved to an all-volunteer force, the military has become increasingly isolated from civilians, as have veterans.

As millennials become veterans, we are not seeing veterans represented across all of America. And definitely not proportionally. Very few vets exist within the "elites" (upper class, political class, and top tier academia). Very few vets exist within the inner cities - or come from them, either.

As we move further and further into a "military class" that is separated from the rest of the population, the rest of the population not only doesn't understand veteran's (and currently serving military) issues they don't care, either.

When vets are woven throughout all of society, all of society has a face and a name that they can put on the title of "veteran." No longer is it asking Congress to take care of some random people over there, now it is asking Congress to take care of Bob Smith and George Jones and Betty Bloom. And all three of them are stand-up folks, so why WOULDN'T we ask Congress to take care of them? I have heard some horrific stories from some of our fellow Veterans, and I am on my 7th PCP at my local VA hospital. Of course I know that not everywhere is going to have the same quality of doctors, but I should expect to expect the same quality care that I get in Tampa, that I would receive at any other VA hospital.

The lack of follow through from some of the Doctors is another huge problem. I had complained dozens of times over the last 4 years about my back pain and, I even got Congress involved because of my lack of care, which amounted to nothing but more of the same "hurry up and wait". Last August I started questioning if I had the strength to continue the fight because the VA didn't seem to give a shit about my pain, and the civilian Emergency Rooms only threw medicine at me and told me and told me to go away. I only a month ago got sent to a civilian spine specialist who just injected me with an epidural, and that 45 minute procedure was more than the entire VA hospital had done for me for the entire last 4 years combined. I know that is certainly one of the biggest issues our community is facing, and I know for a fact that the amount of Veterans not getting the treatment they need and deserve plays a direct role in the mental health, and suicide rates. It tends to increase the likelihood of suicidal tendencies in those veterans exponentially and also largely increases the severity and detriments of those mental illnesses. I've been to VA affiliated treatment but a lot of veterans that need the same program either don't want help, don't think they need help, or straight up can't or won't get the same help. Alcohol, and especially it's overuse, is so deeply accepted in our society that it's really difficult as a veteran to know or even realize we've reached the point of harmful and excessive self-medication let alone the fact that even 3 beers every night is already a little excessive. I personally would drink 1-2 liters of vodka daily and thought I had everything under control and that I was, hilariously, drinking a normal amount. I didn't think I deserved nor did I want treatment or even my diagnosis because I didn't go to combat. And I did my best for over ten years to drink myself to death or kill myself while drinking because of that and because of other losses I suffered related to and during my short career. I see others going down my path and I almost didn't make it through the valley; I'd hate to see anyone succeed where I failed in reaching the end early. I have seen civilian doctors and VA doctors. Doctors at the VA, understand our unique health risk due to our military service and exposure. They are on the lookout spend the time reviewing medical history to ensure proper treatment. I called the VA to see a doctor for a sprained wrist, and the operator told me about the choice program and told me I could go to Walgreen or CVS, something like that, instead of coming into the ER. I sat at the pharmacy for five hours waiting to see the doctor who referred me to go to the VA ER. I went the next day to the VA ER and was seen within 15 minutes. Choice helps me how? Before choice, I had surgery, the VA set up all my pre-appointments and had my funding set up and approved, and had my surgery within a month. After choice, I had to have the same operation a second time. It took two years and the cost in 2010 was 7k and the cost in 2015 was around 45k. Same operation. The choice program had me go through so much unnecessary testing, it took forever then it cost the tax paper a lot more. This is one person's experience but two different experiences dealing with the choice program. It took me many years of navigating the VA to finally get my benefits I earned. It was long and exhausting. I have talked to several veterans who deff qualify for VA benefits just give up because navigating the VA and the VA websites is horrible. There needs to be more straightforward ways that guide veterans through the process of applying and put together a well developed case for the VA. Another issue I am seeing elderly veterans run into is accessing MyHealthvet and VA.gov Some of our older generation are not tech savvy and when they are told the need to create a profile on sites like myhealthvet the are completely lost. With all the different type's of log in and really not being able to use a computer to order medications or request a DR visit the end up getting stuck going around and around through the VA phone service. Something I think the VA should do is send out veterans a list with the main number and extensions to different departments. I say this because when I call the VA you are met with some rude phone operators that don't even let you finish speaking before they transfer you to the department you need. And if no one answers you have to go through the entire process of getting transferred again. When the person on the line should let you finish speaking for one and not only transfer your call but give you the extension so if you have to call back you can dial that extension and not have to go through the call center. One of the big issues I face is dealing with the rude phone operators at Augusta VA who do as I have stated aboe. But over all I think their should be better resources and help for elderly veterans to navigate the VA as well as detailed guidance on the steps to file a claim for newer vets. There should be a liaison at every VA hospital that learns and knows every program offered to veterans and is available to call or go in and see at any point in time for information. That person could even have a list of all the veterans connected to that hospital or care center and a system that checks in with people based on who hasn't been in or made contact. I don't know if it's just my area but it's like pulling teeth to find out any information from anyone because nobody knows. They lose providers frequently and are always hiring and it takes months to fill the positions. The management forces their doctors to see patients in the least amount of time possible and run the veterans in and out like they are on a high-speed assembly line. I was told by 1 provider that the VA locations get paid according to how many veterans they see each month so they get fat bonuses in their wallets by overworking and rushing their staff which creates a high-pressure tough place to do your job which results in high turnover for providers and very low-quality care for the veterans. I've had my annual physical moved and rescheduled about 5 times so far, and that's just since late June. My list of things that need to be checked medically grows constantly because they allow so little time to be seen during any appointment that the provider can only address 1 or two items per visit and visits are MONTHS apart. Dental and vision need to be covered by the VA as well. Most Vets can't afford any outside medical insurance and depend solely on the VA for all of the care that they can provide. Also, many veterans have had their lives permanently altered from serving their country, so WHY are annual VA raises in disability benefits tied to match what SS gives? It should be more than that. Also, why is there such a major difference in payouts for disability benefits between 70, 80, 90, and 100%? Between 90 and 100% the monthly payout almost doubles. I'm rated at 70% but have been unable to work for almost a decade already and VA Disability benefits are ALL that I have to live on. It's not enough to keep up with inflation. I have to live with family because I can't afford a place of my own. I have serious allergies and the person that I live with is a smoker, so it's tough. I am being punished financially because I haven't been rated at 90% or higher. There are vets living on VA disability alone who are not rated over 50-60% by the VA in some cases because health issues prevent us from working, yet the VA says we don't qualify for a higher percentage rating. Plus the way that additional rated items are figured in is against the veteran and in favor of saving the VA money. If I do get another health issue rated and (let's say 30%) added to my existing 70% then that only moves me to 79% and I get paid just 1 level higher at 80% rate as it gets rounded up for payout purposes only to the nearest level. That still gets me a minimal extra amount each month to live off of. Veterans need more monthly income, much larger raises than SS gets, and Dental and Vision coverage. for at least urgent health needs or maybe with a co-pay depending on disability level, etc. Response by CPL Alan Cox made Aug 3 at 2022 10:59 PM 2022-08-03T22:59:15-04:00 2022-08-03T22:59:15-04:00 SN Dennis Lopez 7806696

The military will try to kill you , till death do we part . Hospital, and by that I mean as an example; for some of my appointments I've had to see a P.A. an RN, etc. but not an actual Doctor and one of the reasons that this is an issue for me is because some of the medical questions that I've posed to them at various appointments was answered with an "I don't know," while I appreciate their honesty I still really do need help & answers to my questions and comparatively I usually don't get an "I don't know" answer from my actual Doctor. I should also say that the "other than Doctor" fill-ins that I mentioned aren't necessarily "unqualified" but I think they are put in certain positions that are out of their scope of knowledge or practice. I see this at the Decatur, Ga. VA Hospital and I'm not sure if the issue is because they are short staffed or what.
The 2d issue for me is getting more timely appointments. I've had to wait over 90 days to get a Dr's appointment before, at which point I'm usually then referred to my VA's community care program but sometimes surprisingly they are facing the same appointment scheduling issues so being referred to them doesn't always help.
And lastly, I wish the different medical departments that I visit would "get it together" so to speak as far as the disconnection of the medical advice/information being disseminated. Meaning for example; if a thing (whatever that may be) is bad or good for you then it should be bad or good across the board not opinionated responses about various medical subjects. Just a brief example of that is one Doctor will say "Tylenol is so bad for you, take Ibuprofen instead". Then the subject would come up with a different medical personnel and I then get "Ibuprofen is so bad for you, take Tylenol instead". That makes me crazy and confuses me because I'm supposed to be able to go to them when I need to and I expect to get concise and at least similar answers but this is not always the case for me. That may be a bad example but I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say anyway. Thanks for your time! I am rated at 70% and have been unable to work for about a decade. I'm only 57 yrs old. I don't get enough to afford rent on my own.
I have very bad allergies and am forced to live with family that smoke because there is no way to afford rent, utilities, groceries, a car, clothes, OTC medical supplies, etc. on a 70% disability check each month.
Annual Disability increases should not be tied to SS increases.
Some of us have lost limbs and sustained great bodily injury in service to our country. When this 1 check is all we've got to live off of it needs to be able to allow us to live a decent life. Our ability to work for ourselves and earn a living was taken permanently away from us. We deserve more.
Also, the way that additional health issues are rated and the way that rating is added to the current one is highly unfair toward the veteran and their living expenses. I require lots of over-the-counter items each month which are out of pocket that I would not otherwise need except for the health issues that I struggle with daily.
The local VA hospital rushes us through appointments like we're on a high-speed assembly line and don't take anywhere close to enough time to evaluate us properly or really talk to us about all of our health concerns. I'm told that they get bonuses according to the total number of patients seen each month at each location so management creates hostile work environments for their providers by rushing and pushing them to work ever faster.
My local VA is always losing providers and taking months to recruit due to their pressure cooker work environment. My annual physical has already been changed 5 times since June and it was scheduled a year ago. The first change was less than a week before I was due to appear for it. I'm still waiting.
I am told often by my local VA that if anything else comes up between annual health checkups not to wait until the next year but to come to the ER right away. Even they admit it's not worth waiting months for an opening to try to see your regular provider about a health concern.
I need Dental care desperately and can't afford to get a dental plan on my own because they are very expensive and offer minimal coverage when you buy them individually.
Dental health can impact your heart health and other organs and can worsen or even cause depression yet it is something that never gets mentioned as a necessary health care need.
The VA needs to provide Dental and basic eye health care and basic glasses for each veteran. If we can't get paid nearly enough to live on our own, how can we afford to keep up with rising health care costs on our own outside of the VA? Timely Access to Care- Far too many veterans are still not able to be seen at a VA facility within the time frames set forth by VA. Even with the access to care outside the VA, even those appointments are being pushed out further that 3 weeks out. There are many factors that affect this and its not an easy fix

2. Mental Health- Mental Health is just as important as physical health. Our veteran population suicide and incarcerated rates are still significantly high. We have to pump more and more resources to the Mental health departments and continue to reach as many veterans as we can through different outreach programs. We also need a safe haven where veterans feel safe to discuss and treat these issues without any fear of being looked down on and even for veterans who are also employees of the VA to feel a sense of security that they will not be judged or retaliated against for having such issues. Mental Health problems are something that most if not all of us face at least once in our lifetime while some face these challenges on a daily basis.
3. Compensation- With the cost of living and inflation rapidly increasing, most veterans continue to have major issues surviving and staying afloat. If no other group in America deserves a higher competitive compensation raise veterans do!!!!! A 100% permanent and total disabled veteran who is not able to work and has a family cannot take care of a family of 2 or 3 even with the max compensation rate as of now. Veterans are not trying to get rich from this compensation but we all should be able to live a modest lifestyle in order to care for and support our families the same way we supported, defended and cared for our country. Just as no veteran should die alone, no veteran should have to worry about where our next meal will come from or not being able to afford and take care of our families with the basic necessities of life. Being a Veteran of the Marine Corps I have dealt with all the above and the Va does allot to address these issues, but allot of Veterans are reluctant to talk about these issues because they don't want to be put into that category of veterans. The VA does a good job of getting Veterans in touch with people to help with all the above, but sometimes the housing they get put into, takes the substance abuse issues out of context and puts too much on the Veterans getting sober to be housed. Allot of Veterans have addictions that they can't quit cold turkey, I for instance have been addicted to heroin and fentanyl for about 2 years now and if anyone with these addictions knows being addicted to Opiates is allot more challenging than anyone will ever know. If I don't get high off of Fentanyl daily I will become violently sick and start throwing up, and having abdominal pains and just feel horrible for days, even weeks, if not prescribed Methadone, or Suboxone, for my withdrawals, and while Veterans are homeless, seeking housing assistance, allot of the housing involves being in sober living, which I agree needs to happen, but for Veterans like myself that are addicted to Heroin, or Fentanyl, even Meth these addictions are hard; if not impossible to break cold turkey. That's the reason that many of today's Veterans fail to seek out the resources that we all need and want. I think if given the opportunity to adjust to sober living and get housed first, and have substance abuse classes, as well if that's your issue, were an option, instead of it being you need to be sober 100% or nothing, allot of Veterans would gladly take the help. But I can't just go to a house, without having a backup to my withdrawals, either Methadone, or Suboxone, or Fentanyl before being housed. Half is too much. My pay should be untouchable. I was deployed. My spouse was not. I had to do PT to keep fit. My spouse did not. I was injured and have numerous illness from my service in the military. My spouse does not. We need our hard earned money to help us live a better life once we are retired. We should never have to give half of the half pay to my ex-spouse EVER. It should be 10% or less. There is no justification for abuse, lying or deceptive behavior. We find this out after we have the time to see hind site. And that is after all the years of lying and deception not seen til you find it out then get that divorce and now we are stuck. We did not take these spouses to give our life earnings to them for life. I didn’t. We need a new way to take care of us and stop all payment once they remarry. That is one of my big concerns. My kids get minimal help from their father. I am the mom and take the major roll of taking care of them. We have to fix this situation to be 100% fair to the veteran. I suggest a spouse account to start on marriage and it stops once member is out of the service and that will be dispersed be military channels
and once it’s gone that is it. The reason I say this is because we've been trained to work together to get the job done but our civilian counterparts are not. It's a dog eat dog world in civilian life. We've been trained to complete the task at hand no matter how insurmountable it may seem. Problem solve together so we can all make it to the other side. Sometimes some may have to sacrifice themselves in the process but we work together to get it done. Success is measured in all accomplishing the job.
Our civilian counterparts believe you must use as many ways possible to make it to the top and sacrifice as many as possible to do so. Success is measured in how far you can get no matter who you have to step on to get there.
That type of mindset puts many veterans at a disadvantage because we've been trained to work through to completion and do a great job but many civilians who wish to look successful use veteran workers as a means to get ahead. This causes many job changes for veterans due to unnecessary mental stress. It adds one more layer on the burdens we carry.
Learning how to shed some of our "military bearings" and adapting to civilian thinking can be helpful in reducing unneeded stress. TAP needs to be revamped. The revamping process should have feedback and input from veterans. When I was transitioning, there was so much information that I couldn't keep up. I ended up going back through TAP a second time because I felt so unprepared and lost at the end of TAP than at the beginning. In my opinion, this is the most important thing that needs focus. A veteran's success when applying for benefits, jobs, or anything else out in the civilian world depends on the training and information they are given at TAP. Imagine, someone spends 5, 15, 20 years in the military and they only get 5 days of transition training. At the end of those five days they are expected to know how to navigate the VA disability benefit system, VA education benefit system, VA health system, civilian world etc. Instead of 5 days, it should be more like 2 weeks. There were people in my group that were going into the office at the end of the day. During TAP week, that's all these individuals should be focused on. They've done their jobs for the past X years, now it's time to set them up for success. There are countless veterans that I meet that tell me they weren't allowed to go to TAP for the full 5 days, they only attend 2 or 3 days because they were also expected to put in hours at work. It saddens me to hear people say they don't know how to apply for benefits because they weren't given the proper information when they were transitioning. Income security isnt just the reassurance that my VA disability income arrives as promised. 2. As a Veteran who's been homeless more than once, I need to know that funding for my VASH rental assistance will continue, so I dont have to worry about being homeless again. 3. I need to have VA medical staff that pay attention to my health status, who **actually listen to me** when I tell them something is wrong, and not just categorize me or dismiss me based upon their list of memorized diseases and symptoms. 4. I need the VA to help me get medical devices, non-medical devices, durable medical equipment according to my disability issues, which help ease my pain/allow me to function more independently--earlier before I lose functionality---with less VA 'red tape' lengthy qualification processes which denies more people the assistance they need, than it approves.
(Most important) 5. I need the VA to train its disability evaluators to listen to Veterans reports of incidents, injuries, etc that dont appear in our medical records. My personal experience is that of being denied VA disability benefits for sleep apnea because it was occuring during service time, but not diagnosed or treated during service time. I was also denied VA benefits for repetitive foot injuries despite ample medical record documentation and yet poor quality medical record documentation/no treatment plan for my diagnosed injuries.
