What do you think of Fort Carson, CO? Is it a decent duty station?

I'm thinking about my next duty station I would like to go to, if I'm given a choice. I know they have a good athlete program.

I haven't been on base in 13 years, but if you're interested in the surrounding community as well then it's a great place to be. There are 5 different bases in the area so the state in very military and veteran friendly. It is also absolutely beautiful here in Colorado and there is plenty of great things to do

It’s an excellent assignment. Granted 4ID deploys a lot but other than that it’s a beautiful assignment. Colorado Springs has plenty to do, especially if you are into the outdoors. The worst part about here is the cold winters and getting used to the higher elevation which will break you off until you acclimate.

In my [limited] experience, army posts work in one of two ways: great units and a shitty post/surrounding area or shitty units and a great post/surrounding area. Carson falls into the second category.

Depends what duty station you’re coming from. I went from being light infantry in Hawaii to being in a Mech Unit at Carson and I hated the way the Mech world did stuff. Colorado Springs is great. Lots of things to do and Denver isn’t to far away

Well I saw it being mentioned. But from what I have heard. 4ID units are the worst, everyone I’ve talk to seems to hate their unit, or leadership. The EOD unit is supposedly super chill and awesome. Group is really relaxed A lot of opportunities to advance your career here at Group. The installation itself is very clean and beautiful. Housing, I’ve heard nothing but horror stories about a certain part of the housing buildings, good housing seems to be hard to come by on post. Post traffic isn’t bad. You can drive from one side of post to the other in about 10 minutes. Colorado as a state is amazing. Beautiful scenery, lots of thing to do, mainly hiking and biking. The drivers here are FUCKING TERRIBLE I seem to pass at least one accidentally on my way to or from work every day. EVERY DAY. It’s ridiculous. It’s partly the big military presence everyone is from everywhere with different driving styles and partly all the pot head who move to Colorado just to smoke legally. The population is definitely growing each year. My biggest complaint really is the drivers, I can’t drive anywhere with out seeing an accident getting cutoff or almost rear ended or seeing some dumbass private in 40k Subaru zipping down the roads full of snow.

All depends on what you are looking for. I was stationed here from 93-95 and it was my favorite base both from my units and from the area. I liked the area enough that I came back to live here when I got out in 98. The base has only grown and had new stuff built since then, but can't tell you anything about the units these days. As a military brat, and soldier I have lived all over the world, and now as a cop they are right about the drivers, worse drivers I have every experienced live in Colorado Springs, but otherwise it's great.

Rude people.... the whole base is oversold... but if you want to go there to get into shape... do it. If you can train hard there you can train hard anywhere.

It was, back in the day, referred to as part of the Golden Triangle (FT Carson, CO, FT Lewis, WA, and FT Ord, CA). FT Ord no longer exists. Soldiers used to fight hard for one of those assignments. I got lucky and my battalion moved from FT Sill to FT Carson where I stayed for 3 years. Great post!

It’s a great area but don’t set your standards high for the units. There’s a lot to do all the time and it’s beautiful. Oh terrible hail too.

Not only did I live in Security - 5 miles from the back gate since 1965, my first permanent duty assignment was Ft Carson. I will only say this about the place, if you're from the south, take time to learn to drive on ice and snow.

Lots to do at Carson. Get acclimated to the altitude, it is just at 6000 ft above sea level.

36 months at Ft. Carson, spent 20 of them deployed. Every time I returned I wondered who stole the oxygen... Other than that, was a good place for me and my family.

Did my last 2 there and it was excellent in the 80’s. Excellent people and climbing. Just be careful going near the Academy. They’re not officers yet so they don’t have the full intelligence but are great people.

I was born and raised in CO, and when I enlisted I picked station of choice Ft. Carson. I went to basic in Ft. Jackson and was able to run and pass kids 10 years younger than myself first day (Iwas 29 when I joined). I loved Ft. Carson and after being sent to Korea the next year I re-enlisted for station of choice Ft. Carson. Second time was not quite as good I was now E-5 and things had changed even though I got assigned to the same unit. I spent most of my time down range as we were TAB 1/29 FA. I would still go back if given the chance again.
