Drinking alcohol at socially "inappropriate" times or places can possibly be a symptom of addiction. If a person needs some drug (alcohol is a drug) to start their day or make it through the day, they may have several psycho-social problems. They should seek medical help and counseling.

I gave in. I am on a new med. Cymbalta. I tried to stay away. The VA got me and my medicare. Maybe they are working. I am not sure.

I want to drink as the pills make me feel sort of like high!!

I mean a bit more up and I like it. I was on some other Meds Adderal and a lot of it for years. Then they took them when I did not do my medicare paper work correctly.

Some said I am or was addicted to that. Well that is not my fault.

They used to give it to service memebers in Vietnam I found out by reading.

I have been on many meds on and off since 1999 when the Navy documented that I was on Lithium with complications.

I guess I am trying to figure out what this all is.

I told my doctor that I was drinking and I am connecting it to the new pills and he said I need to go to a detox therapy thing. I am not. No way.

PO3 Aaron Hassay thank you for your honesty. Please. take the meds your doc prescribed and continue to work with him or her if they don’t have the desired effect. I’m not qualified to advise you or comment beyond that. You’re in my prayers.

I claimed it was for sleep, when I worked nights. Then I found other "reasons" when I went to days, on My days off. Then one day I was sitting on the bed with a .45 in My hand. I haven't had a drink since. Detox is a stone bitch. Group can be embarrassing, but You have to be open with yourself and others for it to work. Go sit in an AA meeting, you don't have to say anything, just sit and listen.

Maybe I am just Old Corps or something, but in the 60s and 70s we were a drinking society and military. Happy Hour at the Club served cheap beer and hard stuff. Wine was for senior NCOs and Officers. Private Snuffy had his fill and staggered to his quarters to sleep it off. Overseas the problem was worse and being in the Nam was worst of all. Yet, somehow we survived. The military was busy trying to keep the lid on drugs. I am not saying it is right for everyone to drink, because some definitely can not handle it, but others have little aftereffects, and I am talking a snootload of hard stuff.

On a different topic, as I write there is an ad about signups for problems caused by burn pits. I was stationed 20 miles outside of DaNang and you could see the clouds rising from the dumps from that distance, not to mention a plume or two from each hill inbetween, yet no-one is concerned about our health. I imagine the same held true for WW2 and Korea. The uplifting aroma of burning shit was always in the air...

PO3 Aaron Hassay - Aaron I've been on cymbalta since My detox, ~3 years. I was on other stuff before, and I was drinking while taking them. Alcohol is a much more effective Depressant, than the pills are anti-depressants. If you truly wish to Live a more rounded, less stressful Life, You're going to have to give the alcohol a pass. Life is never going to be cotton candy mountains and Unicorns farting Skittles, because it's Life. With less Anxiety it gets a lot easier to deal with. Alcohol is an evil task mistress. She''ll make You do things, that when sober, You'd never do. You can't throw Her off by Yourself, unless You're really strong internally. Most people need to have someone else along for the ride. If Your doc suggested detox, I say take Him up on it. Voluntary Detox creates a lot less problems down the road than court ordered. You really don't want court ordered mental health stuff on Your record. If the Doc has already mentioned the voluntary thing, He has the court ordered thing in His mind. The voluntary is more like a stay in the Hospital if You're sick. Once the Courts get involved, not so much. Alcohol addiction is, in most cases, a long slow unpleasant trip to the deeps. A strong man with help from friends can overcome it. Stay Strong Aaron.
