I would understand keeping your land line if you are living in a remote (rural) area with either spotty or no cellular coverage. Nowadays, most folks live in populated areas with (depending on your carrier) ample cellular coverage. People have access to the Internet and can use Skype or another service similar to Skype. As for for me, I tend to travel a lot, so it isn't cost effective to keep a land line.

I've cut the cord since 2008.

I've considered cutting the cord on my home phone several times, but I still have it. Primarily because my cable package would be more expensive with out it (all other things being equal).

The only calls we got on our land line were telemarketers and surveyors even though we had repeatedly registered on the do not call list. We ditched the land line six years ago and have not missed it one bit, particularly not the $49.00 per month charge.

This article doesn't mention VOIP services such as Vonage. We make a lot of overseas calls and save a lot with it over the years. I have not had a landline for about 15 years.

Other services such as Skype or unseen.is are also great and free ways to communicate. I have worked in the telecommunications industry since 1985 both military and civilian.

None of those are actually legitimate reasons to continue paying for something I never use. Once toll calls and long-distance fees went away from cellular, land line became obsolete.

One of the biggest reasons that I have heard while on a sales team with the company that I am at now is for Disasters. Alot of our area has been hit by both major power outages as well as Fires that have effected cell towers. Alot of the customers that I have worked with have two accounts one that has a cheap land line about $20 bucks before taxes and the other with just internet

here in California if you dial 911 from a cel phone, it goes the the Calif Hwy Patrol dispatch. If you use a landline, the call is routed to your local first response dispatch (police/fire). seconds save lives.
