Such a different time back then! Life was a bit slower but the men and women some how actually gave a damn about life and had a great work ethic. No one of that generation was asking for handouts. I constantly remind my privates of this concept.. if America could only go back to the way things used to be "including giving up our I-phones" I think life would be so much better. God Bless all the veterans of that era. My Mother, a seventeen year old widow on December 7th, 1941, and then I think of the way they, and all those like them, stepped up when they were needed.
We are loosing 400 WWII vets each and every day, and I simply find it sad to think of a time when there won't be any more of the voices that can tell us about battles that were waged. I think of real heroes who must have been scared to death, but soldiered on through a hail of bullets and got the job done. So many gave their lives so that future generations could live in freedom.

When I was in the 82d, we had to do a landing like D-Day in training somewhere near Norfolk. We left the ship, got on the landing craft, went towards the shore. It was somewhat cold and just getting to the beach was a challenge. Of course there were no bullets flying our way. That was an experience that gave me a slight hint of an inkling of what it might have been like on D-Day. If not, at least it made me think of what it must have been like on that fateful day.
