Benning for OSUT, and seeing an E-7 training alongside you! haha

That being said, TRADOC 350-6, 4-13 (pgs 66 - 8) outline well the meat and potatoes of what will be the most important to you. From what I've heard though, it is night and day in the difference between what Ft. Benning was like when I was there (1993) and now. It sounds like both good and bad. I would imagine that one of the most challenging issues will be how you relate to other IET's as a senior NCO. The regs in 350-6 only go so far, and leave a pretty wide berth for the CO to adjust how he is going to have you involved, to varying degrees.

That will be one hell of an experience, wow! I do have to know, if you don't mind me asking...

...how did you manage to keep your grade coming from AF to AR? I will tell you when I went to Air Assault School, we had a SFC complain publicly in front of the PVT, PFC's........the whole class that as a SFC he wasn't going to pull guard duty on everyones equipment while they breaked for lunch and he found it insulting he was on a work detail with Privates. Eh, my advice is never do that because the NCO Cadre tore him a new azzhole publicly in response. Just be very formal and humble at Ft Benning your first priority is to learn. Army Basic is not going to teach you what an SFC needs to know to operate daily as an Army Senior NCO. As a former Air Force MSGT you are going to be a fish out of water and dont have the knowledge of an Army 10+ year SFC. Honestly you dont have much to bring to the table. Nothing against you personally I can appreciate you returning to service but you dont have the knowledge and skills to be an SFC. Army and Air Force Senior NCOs are night and day to say the least. It states in the regulation of some slight differences in the treatment of NCO's. They should pull you aside and lay down what they expect from you and see what you need from them. We had a (E-5) prior Air Force and we would work with her on the NCO Creed on top of her learning the Soldiers Creed. One of the slight differences I was talking about is living quarters. If they are able to you should be provided a separate place to sleep. If not they may make a little privacy wall in the bay with extra wall lockers (we have done both). Basic for you will look annoyed. You will probably be playing the role of dad depending on how much you interact with the other Trainees. You will probably be given Leadership responsibilities, but I am not sure because you are a prior senior enlisted NCO. Any prior service and NCO ones I have had were all E-5 so they were the Private version of a NCO. I would have told this individual that he was going into a TRADOC environment, not a permanent assignment position. In a training environment, you are a trainee, not an E7. Although some customs and courtesies are extended, and there are some legal requirements such as fraternization, for all intents and purposes you are a trainee. When you attend advanced NCO schooling, you are treated as a student, not a person in. A leadership position. The instructors will expect you to be more experienced and mature and thus able to handle the training environment better than PVT slick sleeve. So, don’t go into this with any expectations of privilege simply because your a senior NCO. Hopefully you’ll be given some considerTion in living environment but don’t count on it. Pretty standard issue. I was legal age, fresh from OSUT and got good and drunk. Long story short; I took a left out my door instead of a right. Right/first right was latrine. Left/first left was another 8 man bunk. I took a leak in a wall locker. I still agree it was a dumbass move. I went back to my bed because I was really drunk. Private who’s locker I pissed in was understandably pissed off. My buddy, an E2 I went through OSUT at FLW with was trying to work it out. I was just denying I did anything. Because, drunk. Anyway, here’s where I think this is relevant. A SFC in the class stepped into this and basically handed out the Benning Accords. I, as the senior ranking and most drunk individual, was sent to bed. My buddy, Benny, was tasked with cleaning up after me. He was ok with this, and while alcohol was never the cause again, he’s spent a better part of the past 18 years helping me clean up the messes I’ve made of myself. Aggrieved E2 was sent to bed and all were instructed it was settled. Over. No spillover. He was an E7, but this was some Tony Soprano stuff. He handled it without getting anyone jammed up, without anyone (including him) losing any sleep, and without the brand new cherry SPC losing tank before he made it to Bragg. That’s what rank can bring to a training school. But that’s a school that’s used to housing all ranks and services. Basic at Benning probably different.
Airborne SPC Stephen Kraft Mon, 13 Jan 2020 23:55:22 -0500 2020-01-13T23:55:22-05:00 Response by 1SG Michael Anthony Gonzales made Jan 23 at 2020 11:05 AM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-does-army-basic-training-look-like-for-a-prior-service-e-7-what-is-the-tradoc-350-6-not-telling-me?n=5474381&urlhash=5474381

As a First Sergeant, I was assigned to attend a 13B MOS School at Ft McCoy ... immediately after signing in, the SM of the academy pull me to the side and express the following “don’t F*** with the cadre!”.

I told the SM I had no desire to disrupt the training and I’m here to learn! Not basic, but close, everyone else there had just got out of basic. I had previously been a Security Supervisor for large alert and Weapons storage areas, and an acting Flight Chief (now called Flight Sergeant) for a flight of about 150 men in Security Police (now Security Forces), and also NCOIC of the Barksdale AFB Combat Arms Training and Maintenance unit as a result of previous cross-training.
So, I was pretty used to running things and being in charge of whatever I happened to be doing to a fair extent, is my point.

It was a great big relief that I wasn't put in charge of anything and just had myself to think about. It was a class of about 90 (memory....not sure..about that) and something completely different from my previous jobs. I really didn't want the job of being class president or whatever on top of the new information. I really made an effort to not "be in charge" or even appear any different from the new people, who were all E-1's. Not that I shirked anything, but I'm pretty laid-back anyway, I just tried to be more so.

I was so glad to be back in the USAF it was kinda pitiful looking back on it. Best thing I did in my younger life was joining, worst was getting out in the first place. No college, no training that didn't involve guns, my future was flipping burgers or pumping gas

I only got any aggravation one time, when an instructor E4 Sergeant (we had them back then) didn't like the fact I didn't call him "sir" or kowtow in any way when I passed on a message from another instructor to immediately stop what he was doing with his fire truck. I just said "Hey, instructor, Sgt Whatever said tell you to stop (whatever)". He wanted to chew my ass for not recognizing his superiority in all matters before passing on the message, IE, words to the effect that I better learn to address Sgt's as "Sir". I told him it had been a fucking long time since I felt the need to do that. He later apologized. Neither of us were wearing visible rank.

Oh, and I wore orange socks the first time we had to change into bunker gear and the E6 head instructor chewed my ass in front of the whole class, rightly so. I had forgotten black was the required color as they were never visible under combat boots, and I'd never bothered to wear special black socks under boots in my previous incarnation.

My advice is to just keep your head down and remember who you are--which is an E7. Who is in training for very basic military stuff which you may already know. Probably by lower ranking people who don't think much of the idea either...

And wear the correct socks. I don't like giving my exact dates of service but everything I will write here is the truth.
I joined the Army Reserve in the 1980s. I went to Infantry OSUT, which is basic and advanced training combined, for 13 weeks.
Fast forward 31 years. I am an 49 year old E7 in the National Guard in a military police unit. I noticed that I was in a 31E slot. (Bear in mind that the basic Military Police MOS is 31B.) Upon inquiry I found out that 31E was "Internment Resettlement Specialist" (i.e. prison guard).
I was unemployed at the time and having learned a few things in my career I asked, "Can I go to school for that?" It turned out there was a 7 week course at Fort Leonard Wood so I signed up.
I reported to the unit in the evening and a fairly young female E-6 was the duty NCO. She went to parade rest (such formalities are usually dispensed with in the National Guard) and explained that I was what the called an "insert" which is a prior service soldier inserted into the regular AIT (Advanced Individual Training) course.
It turns out my class was myself, 5 other inserts (two E-5s and three E-4s - the oldest of which was 30), and 60 privates fresh out of basic training - most of whom had graduated from high school that year.
Lucky for me - my only extra responsibility was to make sure the other inserts didn't get into trouble which was easy because they were squared away.
While us inserts didn't have do the BS things the other trainees had to do we still had to do PT at 0500 and went through the same training. I had a private room, and a rental car so once the training day was over I was on my own and, best of all, I had the weekends off.
The instructors respected me as a fellow NCO and the troops looked up to me for my age and experience.
Yes, it was strange but it was the closest thing I could do to go through basic again 31 years later.

In your buddy's case, he will be going though basic so he will be living in the barracks and be subject to the same restrictions as the other trainees but he will most probably be named the platoon guide (or whatever they call it today). I suggest he brush up on Army terminology and traditions.
Good Luck! It sucked but at the same time it was fun. My Drill put me on the duty crew. I guess he figured me to be a worker and not screw it up. I had some candid moments with my Drills at times. Had a few WTF moments from training cadre wondering if I was crazy for giving up AF life or if I was CID. The biggest problem I foresee for you is dealing with the all the d@mn kids. I didn’t have to live in the bays with them. Thank god.
We got through the shark attack and bay assignments. One of my Drills gave me my phone back and took me to the NCO rooms. Told me when to be back on the drill pad in formation the next morning. Basically, if we weren’t training, I was able to go back to my room and do whatever. Just be back for all my time hacks. I got base liberty twice and ordered from Amazon pretty much whatever I would have been able to buy at the PX. Tissues, cough drops, Advil. I opened that box in front of my Drill and he took one look at me then told me to keep it in my room and don’t share. Since I had a family at that time I was allowed to live off base while going thru Tech School at Shepard AFB, Tx. I had to be in class on time and was relieved of duty at the end of class with no further duties. At graduation I was assigned to my permanent station at Fairchild AFB, Spokane Washington.
