As a civilian family member nothing was more powerful than the salute given to my mother in dad’s funeral. I think it is more than just respect. In that moment it said that they acknowledged my dads service. That he was important. That his mission was done.

I think as an outsider observing that when a subordinate salutes a higher officer they are acknowledging the superior’s rank and responsibilities. The salute back is a thank you and acknowledgement that they could only be where they are because of the teamwork of the subordinate.

Saluting means a privilege that our civilian citizens, who never served, do not get to do.

Prisoners do not get to salute.

A salute is a privilege.

We don't have to salute we GET to salute.

It has nothing to do with respecting the individual and but everythig to do with customs and courtesies and repsct for our rank stucture and leadership. When a salute is rendered and returned it is a custom that has been around as long as we have had militaries. It is one of those "little" things that makes us unique. It provides for a rank structure and respect for that structure. It is there for a reason. When we can't get thelittle things right how can we get the big things right.
