Fear takes many forms: Of physical harm to yourself, or something or someone close to you; Of loss; Of failure and shame, especially if it will become known; Of ridicule; Of rejection; Of appearing stupid or incompetent. And so forth... If these fears are roadblocks opposing necessary action, even something as simple as asking a question, or speaking in or in front of a group, courage is what drives you to do it, the determination to attempt regardless of risk, to plow through the fear. Courage in the face of physical danger can be almost trivial compared to some other dreaded prospects. A much-desired outcome is an aid to courage. Courage is a muscle; it grows with use.Response by PO2 Joan MacNeill made Jun 9 at 2022 2:16 AM2022-06-09T02:16:33-04:002022-06-09T02:16:33-04:00SSgt Patrick Mocaby7718767<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage is stepping on fear -- making the choice to put the winning faith inside yourself before all else; to allow the leader and winner in you to take charge, while laughing in the face of adversity. To be true courage it has to be a choice. It can even be choosing not to do something that you want to do, just because you know it would be wrong or would hurt someone you don't want to hurt.<br /> IMO courage can be learned, but not really taught. You can make the choice to always face your fears, to charge at them head-first. To me, it means having the fortitude to not only do the right thing with everyday things that come across our lives but also those unseen episodes that live in our minds. Courage is having bravery to serve at home and abroad. Courage encompasses the ability to discern right from wrong as well as standing up to evil even when there is very little good around. Courage is also what you do when no one is looking. It's being able to put that substance or alcohol down that might be getting abused to cope with loss or trauma. It's being able to reach out like I did once when my marriage fell apart. It was courage that kept me from using my Glock in my weakest moment and having that fortitude to reach out instead. Courage is overcoming all of these things, but most of all, it's believing in yourself that you can rush up that hill, into the night, or reach out to others to overtake barriers and trauma that challenge each and everyone of us during our service and at home long after our homecomings. For the one who loves his life, and comfort and safety, courage manifests when he risks himself for others. But for the quiet, desperate one who hates his life, he is no less courageous when he determines not to indulge himself by ending his life, but instead patiently endures his pain and carries his burden. For the former it takes courage to face death whereas for the latter who welcomes it, it takes courage to face an uncertain tomorrow.Response by AN Johanna Lupastean made Jun 15 at 2022 9:16 PM2022-06-15T21:16:09-04:002022-06-15T21:16:09-04:00SPC Cathi Santacruz7729146<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Doing the right thing even if it means you go against orders if they are unlawful or immoral.Response by SPC Cathi Santacruz made Jun 15 at 2022 9:27 PM2022-06-15T21:27:55-04:002022-06-15T21:27:55-04:00PO1 Private RallyPoint Member7729178<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage is willing to wake up every day and face whatever may come to continue the legacy of generations before us, to see this great nation through another day.Response by PO1 Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 15 at 2022 9:43 PM2022-06-15T21:43:31-04:002022-06-15T21:43:31-04:00SSgt Ken Hagen7729185<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Being terrified but carrying on with your duty.Response by SSgt Ken Hagen made Jun 15 at 2022 9:48 PM2022-06-15T21:48:21-04:002022-06-15T21:48:21-04:00PO1 Romualdo Ramirez7729213<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Even if you are so f+×÷=/g scared to do it, you do it cause the next person might not.Response by PO1 Romualdo Ramirez made Jun 15 at 2022 10:02 PM2022-06-15T22:02:35-04:002022-06-15T22:02:35-04:00PFC Private RallyPoint Member7729301<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Choosing to adapt and overcome when in the presence of fearResponse by PFC Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 15 at 2022 10:48 PM2022-06-15T22:48:56-04:002022-06-15T22:48:56-04:00Sgt Stu Kopelman7729389<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage is placing yourself in harm's way for someone else in need.Response by Sgt Stu Kopelman made Jun 15 at 2022 11:35 PM2022-06-15T23:35:50-04:002022-06-15T23:35:50-04:00CPL Paul Mercier7729413<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Doing what is necessary in the face of fear.Response by CPL Paul Mercier made Jun 15 at 2022 11:56 PM2022-06-15T23:56:08-04:002022-06-15T23:56:08-04:00Capt Sylvia DeBorger7729434<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage to me means the ability to keep on trying, no matter the odds.Response by Capt Sylvia DeBorger made Jun 16 at 2022 12:20 AM2022-06-16T00:20:34-04:002022-06-16T00:20:34-04:00Cpl Felix Menjivar7729454<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Running towards danger when everyone else is running away and willing to give it all for someone you have never met.Response by Cpl Felix Menjivar made Jun 16 at 2022 12:33 AM2022-06-16T00:33:10-04:002022-06-16T00:33:10-04:00SFC Michael Roe7729491<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage is being proud and brave enough to stand up for the freedom you enjoyResponse by SFC Michael Roe made Jun 16 at 2022 1:03 AM2022-06-16T01:03:38-04:002022-06-16T01:03:38-04:00SPC Chris Ramos7729590<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Courage is being scared but going anyway because I was more afraid of failing my brothers than I was of not coming home....Response by SPC Chris Ramos made Jun 16 at 2022 2:25 AM2022-06-16T02:25:11-04:002022-06-16T02:25:11-04:00PFC Tani Mayeda7729691<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Although I may be overwhelmed with fear, I am able to push the fear aside and do what needs to be done. He was a proud WWII vet who enlisted at the age of 15 to fight for our country and returned with severe PTSD. He never talked about his experiences during the war but once Alzheimer's took control of his mind, the demons of his past began to torment him. My Dad was a proud man and although his mind and body slowly began to deteriorate, he showed tremendous courage fighting against this relentless disease. I know he must have felt shame having to be bathed, feed, and yes even wear diapers, but he handled it with such dignity and "courage." All who cared for him saw it.
