To me the word courage is understanding that pain is inevitable and suffering is optional. Courage means to accept that I am unlikely to find all of the answers, but I ask anyway. Courage means opening myself to my own vulnerability, allowing the mysteries of life to flow through me.

My platoon was under attack by VC and NVA in Long Binh. I stood up to change my position for a better field of fire and my Sergeant (Stephan Bryant) stood up putting himself in the line of fire to tackle me and ordering me to 'GET DOWN.' That is what I call Courage!

There are two types of courage.
First one is if you are facing a dangerous situation and your brain tells you don’t go there or don’t do it, you go against your fears and hit the situation head on. That’s Physical Courage.
The second is you standing your ground or beliefs, even when you’re in a situation where most of the other people are doing one thing or going one direction. You stand up for what is right. That’s Moral Courage.

I have seen so many examples of "courage". Having spent 17 years working as a surgical technician/surgical assistant, having gone through cancer and talking with other cancer patients, and having witnessed so many trudge through things many have not I can say it simple. Courage is being able to make yourself get up and work through what can be the worst of times and convince yourself that you will get through it all.

Having worked as a member of surgical teams, having had cancer and spoken with other cancer patients, and then having watched so many trudge through the most difficult of times, I can answer this simply. Courage is one's ability to see through the hardest of times, be able to pick themselves up (physically or mentally) and work through what many would give up on. They know they are down and out yet somehow, they see through it all and make an effort to make things better. Even though they may know the odds are against them, they never give up. That's courage.

Courage is more than just doing what's needed when facing danger. Courage can also be standing up for others' right and liberties when doing so is unpopular, doing the right thing (having integrity) especially when you know that you will likely have negative consequences for it (such as filing a report truthfully when it makes the organization look less than stellar), and courage is doing these things because they need to be done and are right without expecting an award or reward for it.

The word courage has many meanings for many people. For me it’s driving down that long road on a long day of work and stopping on the side of the road (even though you didn’t have to) because their having car trouble. Or when you see that single mother with a baby in her arms needing help lifting the groceries in her car. To me courage is making that small sacrifice to put others before yourself.

As a Marine it is difficult to acknowledge that though we are harden Marines, we tend to not ask for help when we most need it. From family or friends. Even our own health care providers. The answer to what courage means to me is being strong enough and know when we have to ask for help. Regardless of what it is, courage is knowing when to ask for help.

We go through so much while in the military, we volunteer ourselves for the betterment of others and we have to find the courage to know when we need help.

Semper FI my military brothers and sisters. Stay strong and find the courage to ask for help.

Courage is the willingness to go anywhere and do any job assigned. In my case, I led a platoon of Montagnards in Laos. Americans operating in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam carried no identification cards, no dog tags, and no patches that would identify us as Americans. If killed or captured we had no illusions that we would ever return to America.

After 2020 my Swedish teacher for my language aspect of my Archaeology degree had us write about us a couple secrets about ourselves and people had to guess.
I'd been in the streets of Portland every night for months. I wrote that "I am always scared". People scare me. Men scare me (mst). Walking through the store scared me at the height of 2020. (people went nuts and I had dudes attack me in stores for walking wrong)

She read this. No one could guess. Including the other Vet.
And she said. This surprised me. It's Sara.
We all watch you, how can you be scared you're so courageous.

And my reply was.
Courage to me isn't a lack of fear. It is the presence of fear and stepping up anyway into that wall because you know you have no choice.

The word courage means waking up every day and knowing that you can make it thru the day. When you have PTSD and you are worried that the person that took advantage of you is out there somewhere and you are not sure where they are and are always looking over your shoulder to make sure you will not have something happen to you again takes a lot of courage. Even though it has been over 28 years ago and I have been seeing a wonderful counselor and have the best husband in the world I still have terrible flashbacks and nightmares. I can not even go to restaurants if I can not have my back up against the wall so I know that no one can sneak up behind me. My service dog alerts me when someone is too close. It is a very hard fight and the VA keeps denying your claim. and making you keep fighting so you can never get over it. This takes courage.

Courage means sitting with your friend and calling the Chaplin for them, because they are having a break down and they don't know what to do. Courage. If you are fearless, it does not take courage to proceed in the face of danger. To proceed when you are petrified with fear is the mark of courage. Fear takes many forms: Of physical harm to yourself, or something or someone close to you; Of loss; Of failure and shame, especially if it will become known; Of ridicule; Of rejection; Of appearing stupid or incompetent. And so forth... If these fears are roadblocks opposing necessary action, even something as simple as asking a question, or speaking in or in front of a group, courage is what drives you to do it, the determination to attempt regardless of risk, to plow through the fear. Courage in the face of physical danger can be almost trivial compared to some other dreaded prospects. A much-desired outcome is an aid to courage. Courage is a muscle; it grows with use.

Courage is facing your new combat infantry platoon with the will to overcome all past injuries, losses, and attacks on your mind and spirit. Particularly, when you were relieved of your command following an investigation about a friendly fire incident in which five grunts were wounded and they held the lieutenant responsible for the carnage.
The second platoon honored the courage to continue the fight despite the hurt. And the third platoon actually awarded the courage by providing a 21-gun salute on my last day "in-country"

Courage is the total commitment of your everything. When serving in Korea our response to an officers salute, was Philsong! Total commitment, I served in Afghanistan with Special Operations, TSgt John Chapman, was a teammate, after fighting at 10K ft fighting and incredible battle, a helicopter approached an ambush site and the enemy was waiting. John could have stayed under cover, he could have engaged the enemy from safety. He knew the only way to ensure the QRF was not shot out of the sky was to move from cover and ensure he occupied the RPG shooters. John died from triangulated fire but for the 18 men on the helo, he gave his last final measure! Courage is a selfless commitment to the person to the left and right for us! Philsong!

Courage is the complete and total commitment. President Lincoln describes it as giving your "last full measure". In Korea, our reply to a Korean officer's salute, Philsong! Which translates to the total commitment! The promise I would fight by your side with our allies. I found great courage within my Korean Special Operations Teammates. In Afghanistan, I served with Special Operations and witnessed the courage of TSgt John Chapman's courage on the top of Takur Ghar. In the confusion of the battle John was isolated and left for dead. When he came to after being knocked out, he was alone at the top of the mountain at 10K feet, surrounded by over 120 foreign fighters. John never stopped fighting and he never let up. When the QRF arrived, John saw they were coming into a massive ambush. Recognizing they would all be killed in that ambush. He didn't hesitate, he exposed himself to enemy fire distracting the RPG shooters from their target. He gave his life to save the 18 men on that helicopter. That is courage! That is the highest example of the last full measure! Philsong!

Courage has taken on a few different meanings for me over the years...I am a Human Resource professional and have needed to be courageous for others, who were being persecuted at work for being different or not like the status quo...to me, being courageous wasn't a choice. Courage as a veteran looks a little different. It is getting up every single day, even though you just want to die. Being in so much pain on an EVERY DAY basis and still slapping a smile on. Still attempting to be better. Going to tons of doctors appointments, even after the VA let's you down and fails you numerous times. Courage is waking up for pt every morning to exercise, in pure pain; while higher ranks scream at you "you're not trying hard enough"! Courage may differ a little between each military member. However, at the end of the day. A soldier/veteran is the definition of courage! Signing away your life regardless of situations is courage. I am courage.

Courage is facing something you fear, whether it is a physical, mental or moral challenge. To be true courage it has to be a choice. It can even be choosing not to do something that you want to do, just because you know it would be wrong or would hurt someone you don't want to hurt.
IMO courage can be learned, but not really taught. You can make the choice to always face your fears, to charge at them head-first. After a while, it becomes almost instinctive.

To me, it means having the fortitude to not only do the right thing with everyday things that come across our lives but also those unseen episodes that live in our minds. Courage is having bravery to serve at home and abroad. Courage encompasses the ability to discern right from wrong as well as standing up to evil even when there is very little good around. Courage is also what you do when no one is looking. It's being able to put that substance or alcohol down that might be getting abused to cope with loss or trauma. It's being able to reach out like I did once when my marriage fell apart. It was courage that kept me from using my Glock in my weakest moment and having that fortitude to reach out instead. Courage is overcoming all of these things, but most of all, it's believing in yourself that you can rush up that hill, into the night, or reach out to others to overtake barriers and trauma that challenge each and everyone of us during our service and at home long after our homecomings. The word Courage to me means a few different things, like for example on June 6th,1944, when thousands of young men charging the beaches of Normandy on that historic day. I know most of them had to be scared out of their mind and some probably even crying, but still charging ahead doing their job, or the biggest event that has forever changed my life probably more than others due to the fact I'm an disabled Air Force Firefighter, and that is September 11th, 2001. When I watch the footage of the firefighters and other first responders and the look on their faces when they are going up in the tower, I can see in their faces that they know they aren't coming back down. To me that is courage.
Overall Courage is being afraid but still doing it anyways.

Courage is many things, but it has little to do with suicide. Many people say it is cowardly to commit suicide. I say it is just the opposite. One must have a lot of courage to commit suicide. So, when we address suicide prevention, we need to look more at the real reasons such as depression and the thoughts that there is nothing to live for. It takes courage to lift ourselves up and out of suicidal thoughts and tendencies.

Courage is when a person is knocked down or is at a very low point in their lives and they draw from within to stand up and fight to live. Realization that life is worth living and dying for. When all seems lost but it isn't and you realize that you must be really strong to overcome seemingly heavy odds against you. You somehow muster the strength to go on and be a force in life.

Courage and goals go hand in hand. It is much easier to summon your courage when you have a goal to achieve. Whether that goal is to just go on in life, win a battle, or just do that extra push up. To stand up for what you believe in, sometimes takes a lot of courage.

What is courage? It is the strength from within each of us that enables us to do magical and wonderful things. It allows one to stand up for an issue that you strongly believe in and know is right, when others don't. It's doing the right thing all the time, even when no one is watching.

My Dad was the definition of courage! He was a proud WWII vet who enlisted at the age of 15 to fight for our country and returned with severe PTSD. He never talked about his experiences during the war but once Alzheimer's took control of his mind, the demons of his past began to torment him. My Dad was a proud man and although his mind and body slowly began to deteriorate, he showed tremendous courage fighting against this relentless disease. I know he must have felt shame having to be bathed, feed, and yes even wear diapers, but he handled it with such dignity and "courage." All who cared for him saw it. All who cared for him respected him. Dad always said, "old soldiers never die. Thet simply fade away." And so it was with Dad. And he did it as he lived his life, with courage!

Courage to me, is the willingness of anyone whether is be man, woman, child, police office, fire fighter, is to respond fearlessly basically in the face of death sometimes not even knowing if their coming back home, they just jump in head first! My Granny once told me the best way to be courageous was to not let your fear paralyze you.....Granny's always right!
