Basically, integrity is a character trait where a person is honest/truthful. It's further a trait of a person who strives to always do the right thing, even when it may be inconvenient or even dangerous.

The easy answer is what we are taught in Basic:

"Doing the right thing, even when no one is looking."

But to me, Integrity is more than that. Integrity is being the guy or gal that others look to when they need a role model. It means being true to your word - even if situations change it it costs you more than you expected, whether that is time, money, effort, or patience. It means that rumors start flying, they either don't fly about you, or everyone immediately laughs and says "there is no way (s)he did that." Ultimately, integrity means that everyone you know knows that they can count on you. Rain or shine, day or night, 24/7/365.

This question was answered for me while I served under then BG Colin Powell at Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 1982. Early in my Army career, I was one of about 100 officers that were called together by BG Powell.

During that leadership session, BG Powell told the officers in his command “Integrity is non-negotiable.” He then went on to define exactly what he meant and what he expected of each
and every one of us. He told the group “Today, as I stand in front of you, each one of you has
my 100% trust and confidence…until the day you lose it. Once I determine that you can’t be
trusted, that you’ve misled me or told me a convenient half-truth, I can never trust you again,
and you might as well leave my command as you are useless to me. In our roles in the Army,
decisions have to be made quickly, based on a myriad of input from a staff and advisers. I need
to trust each one of you implicitly, without hesitation, or lives may be lost.”

The standard answer is "doing what's right when no one is around." I believe that it is even more difficult to do the right thing when people are watching; when peers that one works with, that may do the wrong thing due to always doing it that way, and failing to change with the times... Doing whats right even with peers say to hide something or bend the rules. While doing what is right when no one is around is a definition of integrity, doing what is right even when people are watching is just as important.

Integrity. Being a person you could look up to. Someone you could respect, and depend upon to do what's right, to not give in to moments of temptation, those tiny concessions that slowly erode your commitment to the honorable path. Being a person that others recognize as trustworthy, a moral beacon, a rock in a chaotic universe. To always stand for justice, disagree with those with tarnished ethics, who wish to spread their rot over your soul as well, to have it easier for them to cheat, because "it's practical". Of course, you need the sense to pick your battles, not try to stop every runaway train. I've been bruised by those trains at times, but others have later confirmed that I was right. It usually works out in the long run, and you sleep better.

Wayno, Integrity is not only doing the right thing even when no one is looking and listening, it is looking and listening to know when someone else needs assistance and providing that assistance no matter the cost. If you are not willing to take up arms against a wrong then no matter what you may think integrity is, you miss the point. If something is wrong and you know it is wrong and you are willing to accept the wrong because it is over 50 years ago and no one else cares and everyone tells you to forget it then you have no integrity. It means going against the organizations that are sworn to uphold what is right but fail to because it would require them to change what they have been saying for more than 50 years.

I don't pretend to always know what is truly right and wrong. Our society today does not always seem so black and white anymore. So, I'm not sure the old adage of doing the "right" thing no matter who is looking works anymore. I think it comes down to doing what you say that you believe in. Saying something or dedicating yourself to something and following through with actions that support whatever that might be. I also think integrity means knowing your own worth and understading that people can be taken advantage of. This makes me think about working and jobs that I have had where the manager or supervisor takes advantage of my kindness or willingness to work just a little extra. Am I challenging my integrity by sticking up for myself and saying no sometimes?

Integrity in the military means supporting others who don't have the power. I had a Master Chief who took a fellow soldier who was gay against the wall and said "not in my NAVY." We didn't say anything and just kept the incident hush hush which was not keeping with integrity. I always told myself it wasn't right he did that but because he was a Master Chief we couldn't do anything about it today. Integrity or the right thing at the time would meant to tell the Master Chief what he is doing is not right and to please put him down. That would have been support of others who don't have power.

The definition used by so many I've encountered is "doing the right thing when No one is looking" however it's so much more than that.
It's taking responsibility for defending those who refuse to stand up for themselves. Leaving a situation that is or will cause other and yourself to be harmed in emotional, physically or other ways. It's saying something when you see something that just doesn't sit right with you. Following your gut, sticking to your beliefs or just plain choosing the harder route because it's the integral path over the easy path. Integrity is what 'Marine' is supposed to mean...witch doesn't any longer, BUT....anyone in any branch could have it at heart.
INTEGRITY ! Is what most people have not a clue of what the meaning is. Or...even how to accomplish the ownership of it. IF you have 'The Integrity' , you are one of the best people in the world to keep the human race surviving. The problem with the human race throughout history is that 'Integrity' is not something that you can learn easily in a classroom. It is learned from the people teaching it throughout their life span to unsuspecting 'others' that will either 'get' it ...or won't.
Integrity....... It is The Good Disease in this upside down deteriorating human existence that could fix everything ...only IF we all had it and understood it. Integrity can't really be summed up in just a few words, no matter what the dictionary says, Integrity either in control of your life, or it is not. Integrity is the 'standard' that mankind should be striving for for our survival of our species.
IE : If you approve of the Trump Republicans are doing to our freedoms as Humans, then your Integrity is severely in jeopardy...or you have none at all.

This means to me, the willingness and unfaultering view and personal pride, behavior, to believe in something and ones self, that can and will be sacred to the individual. Never wavering from the truth of all matters, even if it means to unintentionally (not physically) harm, place doubt or find fault in the personal perception of the individual. It’s a feeling I have inside that powers my moral compass. It pushes me to go in the right way, do the right thing, and to accomplish a task by not taking shortcuts. Integrity...to me it means telling the truth, being opened, not taking advantage of others, KEEPING your promises you made, helping others whenever you can including the elderly, showing respect towards your co-workers and others as well, honesty, taking pride in what you do, taking responsibility for your screw ups, not being corrupted

Integrity to me is of course, doing what is right, even when no-one is looking. But on an even more personal motto, integrity is not only speaking your morals and principles, but living them in a way that speaks to who you are as a person. I believe that our integrity helps define who we are as a person, and others can see it in the way that we carry ourselves.

Integrity means to me how your are perceived and how you are viewed by others. If everyone knows that you don't have integrity, your word means nothing, and no one will want to work with you. When you go somewhere, especially to a new unit, your legacy precedes you and people will meet you with doubt, or with "joy" with what you will be bringing to the table. Many times I have had situations come up with, that I have seen people get burned without a second thought, because they have no integrity, and their explanations were seen as excuses. Then I have seen people NOT get burned, and leadership defend them, because their integrity and explanations were not in question. I have thankfully been on the latter side for most of my life and I try to keep it that way. Numerous times I have left units much better than I found them, heard afterwards how my replacements were not adequate, and would be frustrated because my old units would be asking for help. My wife would get mad at me saying I worked too hard for no reason if it was just going to go to crap afterwards. I couldn't help how I did things and refused to lessen the caliber of my work. It was not fair to me, the unit, or the people I worked with/mentored. My integrity kept me producing high caliber work because I did not want to be seen as someone who wouldn't do that.

To hold to a complete set of values, a code of honour with both feet firmly on the ground in the sound belief that recognition of all that is right is paramount to my very existence. These are the standards to which I steer my way through my life, a standard of which, for me, came out an accident at the age of seven years, ten months, during which I saw too many faces that I knew, cannot help me, admitted to hospital, I saw a man, a doctor, whom I intuitively knew, here is my help.

This experience left me with an overwhelming desire to know how to help people whenever I come across accidents and injuries. This event was a life-changing moment, leading me to become a highly qualified RN, on two continents. But importantly, it endorsed the attributes I enumerated above. It means doing what right when no one is present . Today, in my opinion this is in need for many who don't regard others. This behavior is also supported by those who don't regard or consider others that's why we have more white collar crimes and a greater propensity of crimes in our general population. This also a result of our prison systems because when they are in jail they often don't get anything that will provide rehabilitation. so if and when they are released they revert to what they know best, which is crimes and or abnormal behaviors.

I do a lot of reading, crossword puzzles and sudoku. I prefer to do my own cooking. I walk often and usually do my shopping as a part my exercise routine. I converse with family, friends and neighbors daily.

One of the basic things I do to keep me mentally alert is when I get up in the morning, the first thing that I do is make my bed. I do not mean just throw the cover over it, I mean make the bed. It helps me to have a nicely made bed to come to at night and I feel that I have accomplished something the first thing in the morning given me a sense of calm and a feeling that there is nothing i can't accomplish. The next thing is to walk around the house and open the curtains, this is sort of saying to the world, I am ready for you. I know it does not seem like much but it really helps me. For me it includes all of these awnsers, but most of all. It means what I have left behind for others to remember how I was. A person with honor, respected, true to his cause, always trustworthy, to be a person someone else would want to be! A role model for my children. Doing what is ethically proper although it may not be moral, there is a difference. Morality is governed by society, ethics are not. Do onto other others as you would want them to do on to you, unless you are into S & M. That is the Catch 22!

Integrity has always in my mind meant to have the discipline to stand up for truth and honor, with a moral code that cannot be questioned. I’ve always felt the truth shall always stand long after my death and be a beacon for future generations. It is often easier to see the value of integrity through someone’s failure and most recently Angela Merkels interview with a German weekly newspaper, where she admitted the “Minsk agreements” were only signed to give Ukraine time to re-arm and build their army up. Simply put the Minsk agreements we’re a promise to Russia that NATO would not expand any further. The moral high ground was lost because of such a lie. IIRC the first agreement was 1991 and last Minsk protocol 2014. If integrity had ruled and word of honor prevailed, I will leave it for you to fill in the blank.
