Character enough to be brave, trustworthy and honest. A perfect example would be men like SGT Alvin York, WW1; G/Sgt John Basilone, WW2 and Pvt 1 Hershel "Woody" Williams, also WW2 and virtually every other Medal of Honor Recipient who, "wore it for those who are still there."

Hello fellow RP friends, what does valor mean to me? Here's a prime example:
I'm sitting here, once more deeply moved by the story of PVT Desmond Doss, who's true story of valor in the pacific theater of WW2 was told in the movie Hacksaw Ridge, which I just finished watching for the 3rd time.

PVT Doss (Died in March 2006) is one of my personal idols- even though I didn't even know about his story before I saw the film the 1st time. Why? Because he symbolizes something I've talked about before here at RP. PVT Doss is THE definition of valor for anyone doubting their "support" role(s).

I'm not trying to preach here, but once again, as a soldier who served the majority of my 20+ years in the Medical Corps (w/ limited exposure to MI, as well as other support functions), I sincerely wish to emphasize to all of you who say only a "combat veteran" is a "real veteran" that you're sadly mistaken. Before those of you who are quick to judge others dump on veterans w/ "non-combat" MOS's, I recommend that you see that movie, which is an accurate description of PVT Doss's heroism. If his story doesn't move you to rethink your judgement of support personnel, well, there must be something wrong with you.

I personally probably have a C-130-size chip on my shoulder about this, because 1) I personally almost got blown to pieces in my "support" function, and 2) I'm sick and tired of people saying support personnel don't deserve to be considered "real veterans". If the true story of PVT Desmond Doss doesn't change your views on this, nothing will in my opinion.

Just felt a need to get this off my chest.

Valor is a selfless act considered bravery by others but not by the person or persons performing that act. They do it as a form of duty or loyalty to those they serve with. They deny it as being anything out of the ordinary it is not a hunt for glory or attention.

The true definition of Valor is YOU. Which requires great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. This is a noun. Which encompasses people,places, and things. to me, valor means boldness and courage in the face of adversity. This could be a physical battle or a mental battle. As a veteran, I find it easy to face the physical battles. It is the ones inside that truly scare me sometimes, such as PTSD. It also takes courage to reach out for help. We must stand strong and face all that life throws at us.

Modern Coast Guardsmen don’t see much battle, but that doesn’t mean that they lack courage while facing danger. I was a Damage Controlman in the Coast Guard. We wore red caps aboard ships when the rest of the crew wore blue. That is because the Damage Controlman (DC) we’re the people who’s job it was to save the ship during a sinking or fire emergency. We were the ones that put out the fires or patched the hull of a sinking ship. Often in the middle of a cold, dark, rough and unforgiving ocean.

It means selflessness. It means knowing that the cause you are standing for is greater than you. A selfish person isn't inclined towards valor. Selfishness breeds the opposite of valor. I feel this is why when you hear people that were close to a hero tell what kind of person they were, they almost without fail tell of what a good person they were. Valor is a spiritual principle and spiritual principles feed each other.

Valor is simply facing down fear, either real or imagined. For example, since the day I was shot during a chopper hoist mission in Viêt Nam, I have a dreadful fear of uncontrollable pain, like that which took control of my body that afternoon 50 plus years ago. In the decades since I frequently have vicious nightmares in which I am completely alone in agonizing pain. The potency of these dreams often cause crippling ghost pains to persist throughout the following day. The regularity and extent of these episodes often lead to unmitigated dread of falling asleep nights. This fear is based on entirely imaginary pain, yet the fear itself is real. Were I a man of valor I might well come to terms with these figments of my own manufacture, and thereby perhaps find some measure of rational resolution, once and for all. Instead, devoid of valor, my irrational fear is a force that can easily take control over reality. Oh what I would not give for a healthy dose of a true hero’s valor.

To me valor is having honor plus dignity for one’s Country and one’s self. It’s gallant bravery and strength for one’s Country on a battlefield in the face of danger who won’t leave anyone behind even if it means death. When I joined the Army I believed that to be a soldier I had to have honor, respect, discipline, not just for my superiors, Country, but most of all for the Commander and Chief ( President) who was in office. To me seeing the American flag flying in the sky and knowing that so many honorable brave men and women who came before me gave their lives in bravery (valor) we have this beautiful beautiful Country. Someday hopefully more soldiers will follow in my boots. Valor is an honor given to few who unfortunately have to fight on a battlefield and face danger.

Valor is running to face the danger instead of hiding to save oneself. I didn't hear of valor at Uvalde School until the border patrolman interacted and ended the situation, not before nineteen children and two teachers lost their lives. We need more people in this country to step up and show some valor, it would make this country get back on track. I will not cower in fear, I will personally engage anyone trying to take someones life even at the risk of my own.

The word valet means to me? Valet can be a man or woman, it's a person that thinks about somebody else than their self. Sacrifice for a nether person, not caring what might happen to themselves. We look at soldier as that person. Yet , having a valet soul happens to parents who do all they can. And sacrifice life and health for the care of their families. Basically, I see a valet person who committed to give themselves no matter the outcome, risk it all attitude.

I earned 35 air medals in Vietnam. I received the “V” device for my 13th medal for a combat assault and returning to get news reporters out of Katum before the battle began with a NVA battalion on the Cambodia border. We took 14 hits on the assault and after damage evaluation, I told our great pilots we can get them. I still have vivid memories. The smiles and thankfull faces were very rewarding. Fly Army.

Valor means showing up at "Showtime" and staying until the show is over. Then waiting and preparing for the next roll call and "Showtime"! Some display Extreme valor when "The roll is called up Yonder!" before the next "Showtime"! Many exhibited Valor all their lives and in all their endeavors without thought of reward or recognition. When their Valor is recognized publicly, professionally or officially they are genuinely, deeply and emotionally effected and humbled. They mostly cringe from the recognition but accept it stoically and thankfully. Knowing the difference in Valor and self-aggrandizement is hard sometimes, but it can be found with some self-knowledge of the difference.

To me, the word “valor” is more than just a word. It holds depth and meaning for which mere words cannot do justice. Reason being, valor requires action. Despite being classified as a noun, it qualifies on all levels and circumstances when the call of duty requires the action necessary for the benefit of others and to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves and loved ones.And this action is nothing short of heroic patriotism at the risk of personal safety, destruction, and one’s own life for a greater cause; be it God, Country, or just the right thing to do, with the only compensation being justice is served, the weak are protected, and freedom continues to reign freely until God welcomes him in Heaven. My husband, a Vietnam vet, showed more valor than I ever thought possible. He served a year in the fields and was exposed to Agent Orange. As the years progressed, he began exhibiting the signs of that exposure. The last 10 years really started taking its toll on him, hitting him with Diabetes 2 and Parkinson's Disease ( both classic effects of the Agent Orange) and he went from walking with a cane to using a walker and finally having me move him around in a wheelchair. We had arranged for a chairlift to be installed so that he could get to our bedroom and his own bed, but it was too late. He developed increasingly debilitating problems, including kidney failure and retinopathy, affecting his eyesight. The final step was the fall that he took, landing him in the hospital for crack vertebrae. His heart stopped twice trying to do surgeries on him and after a month of downhill issues, he was placed in hospice and passed away 12 hours later. All of this happened during the pandemic and I was not allowed to be by his side until the final 24 hours of his life. This brave, gentle man never once complained about his situation, even knowing how it came about and what was coming. He continued his strong belief in America and his duty to serve his country. He was always a bit hurt by his treatment by the public upon his return home, but maintained his loyalty to this country. The valor he showed with the cards he was dealt is the ultimate service to his beloved country.

To me valor is having the courage to face things that are completely out of your control for a reason you deeply believe in for the sake of people you have never met with no regard for your own safety. My cousin Kipp showed great valor when his convoy was hit by an IED and although he was severely burned he helped pull his fellow soldiers and civilians to safety.

Basically valor means doing whatever is necessary to prevent something harmful to another innocent human. In combat that means your comrades as well as innocent civilians. This might mean risking your own life to prevent harm to comrades or innocent civilians, even f it means risking yours. Many of us have done this in combat.

Valor means to me the great sacrifice that my fellow brothers have endured during the face of danger. The word to me also mean to stand by your brothers and sisters. Even if its not in presence of danger, just being their support when he or she needs it. The courage and commitment that I saw and grew up around for 20 years, showed just how strong the military family was. I saw men cry on the shoulders of other men, when times were hard (we came to help that fellow brother through his darker time). The word valor to me can mean, many things we face on a day to day basis and find a way to push through. Valor is a word I would stand by till the day I die.

Valor is the men women and other genders, that have faithfully served throughoout wartime eras , have lost friends saw horrible acts on and of the battlefields, have gone above and beyond with no recognition other than a" good Job" or a "thank Gosh we are ok now" after the tour is up... and willingly go back to another battlefield in another tour. Come home, have to put on a party face, do their job, adapt to the World and a country that doesn't even notice that the people of the country have not even had a hiccup in their lives because of the soldiers Sailors, Airmen , Marines, Coast Guard, and Reserves sacrificed so much for them not even to notice a War had been going on.
The Soldiers ,... are just having to resume their duties, and lives like it never was.
This, and mostly that those soldiers and former soldiers don't make a fuss about it, try to go on with living... and rarely talk about any of their experiences outside of a few battle buddies and vets.

Valor can definitely be shown on the battlefield, but also exists in everyday day life by doing the right thing, standing up for the weak, unpopular person, simply by rising to the event while all others coward in the background. Valor is righteousness, fearlessness, overcoming fear, determination, duty, honor and putting America first! It’s character and courage in the face of a threat. Any threat. Leaving aside the obvious context of valor in combat for a moment, I see valor outside of that arena when someone has the courage to stand up to pressure from seniors or others because what they are being asked to do is morally, ethically wrong or illegal. Being willing to accept significant unpleasant consequences rather than compromising one’s moral principles is also, in my opinion, a valorous act.

VALOR. ??!!, I speak of my own acquaintance, experience of, and personal definition of the term Valor. From years gone by and during the time I was exposed to the situations that occurred where the characteristics, virtue and actions of soldiers was created or revealed. Those individuals under severe duress, fear, imminent danger to life and limb, performed valiantly without hesitation, no holding back or personal consideration of the danger to their selves. Many young boys (men) that I had briefly talked with, not even knowing their names, appearing to be just scared, just moments from panicking as were we all. Normal young men in every sense of the word just wanting to survive and get out of that hell hole in one piece. PFCs, Spec.4s, in the eyes of the establishment and NCOs just another plain lowly GI. No “Harrrrvard, UCLA, Yale uppity gung-ho glory hounds”, just kids from the farm, construction workers, teachers, plumbers. that were called on to do the country’s dirty work, be killed or ruined for life if necessary. They answered the call to serve for no other reason than their love of country and sense of duty to do what was expected of them. There were times as an NCO I had to scream, push or smack some of these young men that were frozen in fear to bring them back to reality and do their jobs. Others would panic, run and forget the killing zone they were in and be dropped in a heartbeat. Most stayed the course and were like machines reacting to the situations with deadly, unadulterated, killing machines or soldiers. Overcoming the emotions to just freeze, break and run, as we all wanted to do but didn’t. I have heard some BS so called “trainers” of today proclaim “don’t worry you will rise to you level of training” I call BS, when those bullets zipping by seem the size of a brick, seeing your friends dropping or wallowing in their blood and guts, screaming for help, calling for their mothers, 90% of any training goes out the window. You rise to the occasion, protect the man beside you, forgetting all the horror you now find yourself in and go kill those who are hurting your friends. Thus in these moments I learned the meaning of valor. A man previously fear froze, shaking in panic now leaving all cover, charges the fortification of the enemy, like a madman, mercilessly ripping magazine after magazine through a smoking M-16, or belts of a m60 till all are eliminated that were trying to kill him. No fear, no mercy, no remorse, just the will and desire to stop the killing at any cost. Some of these valiant warriors found after their selfless actions would be found with several wounds that they incurred during their deeds of honor yet continued their assault. Much like Audie Murphy, MOH, most decorated PFC of WWII, credited with killing 57 German soldiers in one single battle. He was later asked how he was able to do such a miraculous feat, he answered “Those Germans were killing my friends”. Just a poor son of a Texas sharecropper. Valor in my mind can never defined in words alone, there are not enough adjectives to state the grandeur of the young I had to honor to be with. True Valor never discriminates, as I saw valor was evident in every color, race, creed or religion. I have heard many define the word courage, the best definition I have heard to date is, fear with faith. Personally, I can confess to the fear, panic, inability to move, losing control of your body functions. To understand what can happen in war to a typical young man and see those who overcame all physical obstacles and perform as they did, to me that is the greatest meaning of Valor. IMO

Valor- first thing that comes to mind is Bravery but that is too simplistic an answer. I feel that anyone that even signs on the dotted line is being brave because they are possibĺy signing their own death warrant. I felt honored when Congress opened the American Legion to Reservists and National Guard members whether they served overseas or not. My father was a Corpsman in Korea, one Uncle served on the USS Enterprise during the same time frame and my other Uncle served in Germany in the early days of Vietnam. Those days men had VALOR, they served for their God, their Country and their families. They didn't need a job or had to be "bribed" to enlist. Until Vietnam was in full swing was the draft the major recruiter but those Men for the most part served with distinction. But to get back on track, VALOR ìs the combination of Bravery, Brains, Camaraderie (covering your teammates 6's), and it simply boils down to doing your job to the best of your abilities under the most DRASTIC CIRCUMSTANCES. Donning the uniform is both a honor and a responsibility, something that I've taken seriously both wearing Green and a career in the Thin Blue Line. To add a not, my Father became a City Fireman following his Father in the family business. I have a heritage of Community service all way back to my Great- Grandfather and Great-uncle. The Medal of Honor is a Great honor but each winner will tell you that there were a bunch of other guys just as deserving as they are. VALOR is the name given to the combination of everything I've listed in my post. Every soldier, airmen, marine or sailor along with police officer and Fireman that put on their uniform and DO THEIR JOBS ARE DESERVING OF HAVING VALOR.

Valor is the character trait no one knows they have until the moment it's needed. Valor means showing courage in the face of extreme danger, without regard for one's personal safety. Our nation's highest award, the Medal of Honor, much of the time is given for valor.
After the Battle of Iwo Jima, Admiral Nimitz said, ".....uncommon valor was a common virtue."
Over 20,000 Japanese soldiers were killed during the 5 week battle.
6,821 Marines & Sailors were killed and 19,217 were wounded.
TWENTY-SEVEN Medals of Honor were awarded, the highest number for a single battle in American history.
13 MOHs were awarded posthumously.

You know, valor is like a nickname. None of us gets to attach that moniker to ourselves. We all think we have it. Some of us even start out in search of it. We grow up watching John Wayne movies and aspire to be like Col. Mike Kirby - well, SGT Peterson, if I'm honest. Never was the officer type. But, point is, the only way you really know you have it is when you find that dirty dusty ol' medal on the floor of the garage under your tool box one day when you're old and grey. "Gee, thought I threw all these things in the garbage years ago when I retired."

Point is, the kind of boys and girls who will volunteer to be #1 in the stack for EBCR or first down the rope into a building known to be hot - or first into the water to clear mines when sharks have been spotted, THOSE people know what valor is. It's not worrying about losing the contents of your own stomach, or a few pints of your own life's blood, to check the boxes and get back to the land of the big PX. For the safety and well being of others.

I fail to understand what valor means ~ I know living takes courage.
Courage comes in many forms, to me the most courageous act is
what a person does every day to fulfill one's obligations to spouse,
children, family and country.
I think a warrior can be courageous in the moment ~ but for the most part
they just do what they signed on to do; everything up to and including one's life.
Is the mother and or father who works to clothe and feed their children;
with no real time to indulge themselves, day after day ~ not just in the moment,
who will do for their family what they never consider doing for themselves...
a person of valor...?

Valor means that someone is brave and courageous. Soldiers that show valor are recognized by the president and congress for their acts of bravery. Acts of valor have helped save many lives in the face of danger.
