What does "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" mean to you?

Im curious to what makes you click one or the other.  I think most people see them as the like button on Facebook, but at times I am perplexed as to why some things get thumbed down.<div>For example I asked a question about posting questions repeatedly and immediately got a thumbs down.  What is that supposed to mean?</div><div>It kinda hurt my feelings a little bit.  (this will probably get a thumbs down)</div>

To me "thumps up" means the mob wants me to let my opponent to live. And for "thumbs down", well what do you think?

Sorry, posted the comment in the wrong place. It's a matter of context. In a discussion forum such as this one it simply indicates agreement or disagreement. If the context is a matter of communicating over a distance, thumbs up for success or good survival potential and thumbs down for the opposite

It depends SSG Burns, depending on if I read and join in on a discussion of if I created the discussion. If I created a post I will give thumbs up to people who responded as a thank you and an acknowledgment that I read it. If I join in on a discussion created by someone else, I give a thumbs up for a good post that contains good information, or has some entertainment value.

I have yet to give a thumbs down to anyone. I won't give someone a thumbs down because I disagree with them or don't see any value to their question or response. I think the only way I would give a thumbs down would be if they took an unprofessional tone or attempted to make a personal attack towards another person. It's sort of like the way to let someone you're acting in a manner that isn't becoming of a service member or a veteran, without having to engage or respond in kind.

I never give a thumbs down to my fellow veterans and even if they do use the down arrow, I can accept that. Afterall, this is in part why we serve.

In Roman days thumbs down was a sign to live. Thumbs up was a sign to die. Exactly reversed from what Hollywood portrays.

In modern time thumbs up is a sign of a good job, bravo zulu, I agree, a sign of affirmation. Thumbs down being a sign of disapproval, lack of agreement, etc.

down has too many interpretations/connotations and I will probably never use it
