In a discussion forum such as this one it simply indicates agreement or disagreement. If the context is a matter of communicating over a distance, thumbs up for success or good survival potential and thumbs down for the opposite SGT Leigh Barton Mon, 11 Nov 2013 13:30:01 -0500 2013-11-11T13:30:01-05:00 Response by Cpl Ray Fernandez made Nov 11 at 2013 3:09 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-does-thumbs-up-or-thumbs-down-mean-to-you?n=5455&urlhash=5455

It depends SSG Burns, depending on if I read and join in on a discussion of if I created the discussion. If I created a post I will give thumbs up to people who responded as a thank you and an acknowledgment that I read it. If I join in on a discussion created by someone else, I give a thumbs up for a good post that contains good information, or has some entertainment value.

I have yet to give a thumbs down to anyone. I won't give someone a thumbs down because I disagree with them or don't see any value to their question or response. I think the only way I would give a thumbs down would be if they took an unprofessional tone or attempted to make a personal attack towards another person. It's sort of like the way to let someone you're acting in a manner that isn't becoming of a service member or a veteran, without having to engage or respond in kind.
Cpl Ray Fernandez Mon, 11 Nov 2013 15:09:53 -0500 2013-11-11T15:09:53-05:00 Response by SSgt Private RallyPoint Member made Nov 11 at 2013 3:21 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-does-thumbs-up-or-thumbs-down-mean-to-you?n=5457&urlhash=5457

I never give a thumbs down to my fellow veterans and even if they do use the down arrow, I can accept that. Afterall, this is in part why we serve.
SSgt Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 11 Nov 2013 15:21:56 -0500 2013-11-11T15:21:56-05:00 Response by LCDR Jeffery Dixon made Nov 11 at 2013 3:26 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-does-thumbs-up-or-thumbs-down-mean-to-you?n=5458&urlhash=5458

In Roman days thumbs down was a sign to live.
