What exactly is a “chalk” when it applies to a range environment?

I’ve heard of a firing order and have qualified at multiple ranges up to this point and it’s my first time hearing the term so I was just curious.

Chaulks are usually for air assault ops. It's for loading A/C

I was told it started in WWII amongst paratroopers. A number was put on each guy in your 11 man stick with chalk, and you were to load on the plane with the same number chalked on it. I've heard it used often when lining up troops to load on different helicopters, etc., even though there was no actual chalk involved.

1972 to 1975, In the 82nd ABN, I always thought it was use for a Line of men ready to load the aircraft, and also heard it used at the firing range. Chalk, when said meaning, next line of shooters on the firing line.
