What exactly is "Damascus Steel" when it comes to high quality kitchen knives? Can anyone on here explain in detail?

Thought this would be a good place to ask with all the hunting knife afficianados in the Veteran community. I know kitchen knives and hunting knives are not the same thing. I am just curious on why the high premium charged for "Damascus Steel" and what makes it so great as compared to other knife blade material?
