2013, while in Germany, I completed the Marche de l'Armee in Diekirch, Luxemburg and the 4-day Nijmegen March in the Netherlands. Both were great experiences that I will never soon forget. The most memorable one is Nijmegen. 4 days of marching all of the Netherland country side with multination's armed forces and civilians having a great time. Truly awesome. The sites of Luxemburg were breath taking, but the experiences in Nijmegen makes me want to do it again. God willing, I will be able to one day.

A lot, None, they suck.

5 years in 7th ID, many years in other units that wanted to try and be as hard as a light fighter unit.
25mi quarterly and every time some new commander wanted to get his buckle, or help a buddy out.
50 mi every so often, so we could get "ready' to suck for the full hundred.
100 miles annually.
then later in another unit
100 mile in Alaska on the pipeline road (most of that rucking across softball sized rolling rocks)
then later in another unit
Weekly 10 mile, and monthly "more"
then later in another unit
monthly 10, 12, 15, 25, in repeating cycle

There are better ways to attain fitness......that said, some specificity is needed , to train as you fight..So if rucking is to be used, it should be in full kit, fighting load, to attain form, fit and function of the kit as worn, work out the placement and wear of items, so they work for you not against you. So you can figure out in garrison what rubs where, and how to prevent it.
As an esprit de corps deal....NO, HELL NO.
As a fitness exercise NO, HELL NO

I've only ever done, outside of Basic, two ruck marches in my entire career, both in the active component and the USAR. The first was when I was an active duty SPC with HHC 3rd ID G-1 in Wuerzburg, Germany (Yes, you read that right, personnel folk doing ruck marches). The second was as a USAR TPU going through WOCS.

Just the ones at BCT and AIT. I recommend Stairway to Heaven at Fort Benning. I might have one coming up in April but that's sort of voluntary. It's a ruck for awareness kind of thing.

I don't actually recommend rucking for anything other than deployment prep, making sure guys know what they're doing. Make sure they know where to place their gear so that it works for them and doesn't drag them or rub them the wrong way. Reinforce proper foot care.

Otherwise rucking is crap. No one (most no one) likes it, it's hard on the body, and it doesn't build esprit de corps all that well in my opinion other than some bragging rights I guess. Most guys just want to sleep afterwards, grab a beer.

The one I remember the most is the last one of Air Assault...there were longer ones but that as the one that tore my feet up the most. I remember a SF sergeant finishing the 12 miles with only a few minutes to 'spare' and the black hats trying to push him to hurry. "I thought the standard was three hours, not 2 hours and 57 minutes?" He was the only person not a physical wreak at the end and that did leave an impression with me.

My ARNG company did them regularly. Generally fairly short. I don't believe that I ever did over 10 miles in the Guard.
I did the Norwegian Foot March hosted by the University of Southern Indiana last year. I plan on doing it again as I get the chance, and definitely recommend it.

I will say one thing, I hope there is not a fuel crisis any time in the near future. Got plenty of practice in the late 70s because of fuel shortages for training.
Marching from the barracks to Pope AFB (now Pope Field).
Marching back to the barracks from any of the DZ's on Fort Bragg or Camp Mackall.
Marching from Fort Sherman to Fort Kobbe (Panama). Both through the jungle and along the Trans-isthmian Highway.

Try and complete the 3 day Magsaysay bar crawl in Olongapo PI. Walking that 2 miles and consuming that much alcohol in that heat is a killer. I've done two Nijmegen 100 mile ruck marches (military level) back in the 90s while stationed in Germany. All volunteer. Best thing about it, the Netherlands and the WWII 82nd ABN and other ABN units history around the fields and bridges. The experience with international NATO troops and interchanging items with them, the girls kissing us while we marched through the towns and the night life in the town (if you weren't too beat up from the daily 25-30 mile marches / 4 days). These were fun. Worst ones were 12 mile and 12+ mile forced ruck marches in my many years in Bragg. And if you like rucking steep a$$ hills you gotta go to Hawaii. Good times!

now i agree that fitness at a high level is needed, there is a point where over exertion and over work starts working against you. Teh NFL is one of my examples--ONE afternoon's work at the highest level takes from one day to a week or more if injured seriously to recover. i would like to see the NFL invite some military people to summer training camp, and some NFL guys to PT and a march.

Nijmegen in the Netherlands it's a 100 mile March over four days but it is about three miles to the start and three back so it's about 124 miles altogether but it is also a contests of how fast you can do it us partying all night every night. So you have all that booze in your system and it is like 90% humidity and 80 to 100 degrees out side. You have to have the required weight at the beginning and end so you have to carry all your water and food which is extra weight, but as the day goes it gets lighter. It is a ton of fun because there is a ton of countries that travel to the Netherlands to do this and you get to know all these different people from around the world.

Nijmegen - in 1986. 100 miles in fours days. 1st Battalion - 13th Infantry Regiment - from Baumholder. I called cadence for 95 of the miles. Marched with MSG Suran Sar (I think he was a PFC then) who later earned the Silver Star with the SF in Afghanistan. What great time. Got drunk one night with the Dutch Marines in Camp H. I had signed up to go and then we were told we were not going - and then we were. Marched 200 miles in 10 days to weed out a couple - had a few days off and then went straight to Nijmegen.

My grandfather marched from Omaha Beach to Aachen, Germany with the big Red One. They averaged 30 miles a day for just over 3 MONTHS !! They got 10 days of R&R then were sent to The Ardennes where they marched to Czechoslovakia via the Remagen bridgehead. Whenever I did a forced march I would think about Gramps stories & remember how easy marching is when someone isn't shooting at you.

I have done so many marches and ruck walks and timed comps., but my favorite and most memorable was the 1991 Helmstedt International 25k march in Berlin. It was during the unification of east and west Berlin and took the route of the former wall dividing them. I believe it was the last March of its kind, because we ended up moving out of Berlin shortly after. The history and camaraderie of all the nation's involved was amazing and something I will never forget. I even took the medal we received after completion and made it my everyday carry challenge coin.

I've done this Bataan Memorial March several times. I think it is worthwhile.
As of last year, there were still two local men who survived the march, one was in attendance. Meeting him was a humbling experience.

As an MI guy, we planned ahead and utilized the MOPO options! Jokes aside, cannot say I had it that bad and my hats-off to you fine folks that endured! I enjoyed my time in the Rockies when I would go out hiking on my own. The thin air would often get you and slow you down, but it was great training for when we did dawn a ruck! Did a MOPP-4 march at my first assignment. That left quite an impression for my duration - no air and a ruck at Carson, what a joy! To me though, it was about the comradre while performing. Enjoyed every single one and would do again!

Aside from the fact that I personally loathe forced marches with every fiber of my POG being, I find them highly impractical. They're one of those idiosyncratic "hooah" holdover traditions, much like airborne operations. For commands to make them an evaluated standard is a waste of training time and resources. My wife is a PTA at an Army hospital, and she sees countless injuries caused or exacerbated by walking miles and miles with excessive loads. It would be one thing if we were an ancient army that marched into battle, but we aren't. Commander's aren't doing themselves any favors on the readiness front by perpetuating this utterly retarded form of imposed masochism.

I did the Nijmegen marches in Holland, 1978, 82, 83 and 84. Basically you have to walk 100 miles over a four-day period with a 22 kilo pack, in combat boots.

There is also into volksmarching, and would do a marathon every weekend. I would speed walk them in boots with a pack.

2d ID, 1-38 Inf, 1980 - Battlion 25-30 miler end of the month, full rick, combat gear; Company 12 miler mid-month, no ruck, both every month. Team Spirit 80, all we did was ruck for a week. Worst hill for the long ruck was up ROK Ranger Hill, last one before the back gate of Campe Hovey. Fridays we ran the "Horn" from Camp Hovey, down to the MSR, through TDC, entered Camp Casey main gate, through Casey, out Casey back gate, past the quary and back into Hovey.

32.5 mile night movement. 65lbs ruck not counting plates, weapon, and kit at FT Carson in 2013. BC directed, but he did it with my platoon. LTC allowed the 2LT to get us lost, because LT trusted NODS and a map instead of looking up and using terrain and the natural loom...he chose to keep staring at a map. CSM was mysteriously absent, S3 SGM joined us with more weight.

Medics and S-shops all fell out, no fallout vehicle, so my prior service as a nurse came into play...made sure to check all of the kids feet to ensure they were powdered, mole skinned, and doled out my spare socks to prevent further blisters and hot spots.

We started around 2000Z, didn't return until nearly 0700Z. Most were black on water by the end. Some of us were walking like Bigfoot pushed some sour horseradish sauce into our beef and cheddar for a week. Myself and several others were put in for AAMs but the S1 shop lost the paperwork twice.

I wouldn't recommend it. White Sands 26.2 heavy movement was less painful.

Just like the rest of you I've done so many I can't remember them all, a lot at Ft. Bragg after an Airborne Op told the barracks are that way but when I was preparing for the Q Course I was rucking up and down Misery, Agony and Heartbreak on a weekly basis at Ft. Knox and they suck. The most memorable one was in Hawaii around 84 or 85 we did the first (so I was told) 118 mile around the island road march marathon, we had girls driving by in Jeeps flashing us, good times.

2 days to Cross the Panama Canal in full gear off road. Last time it was done before we did it in '83 was I think 70 years. Full load cutting bush. If I remember correctly it was the cross canal march.

I done some Volkswagen marsches in Germany and here in the U.S. A few 20 klicks and some short Ones. I was all set to do another and a deployment came up that I had a chance to back off on, so I did the Deploy, glad I did.. we busted our keesters and got a lot done with just enough equipment(USAFEur) shorted us some gear. M1959 field kitchen Units 3 short.. we were expected to go strictly by the Master Menu and being 3 units short it'd be hard.. so we put our heads to gether and cut the roasts into slices While partly froze.. got along piece of sheet metal from flightline mechanics.. pulled enough units(4) side by side, put m2 burners in top level and we had a monster grill.. we'd done our other cooking and had a couple line carts hooked to power strip hooked to diesel generator and jacked the heat and cooked Veg's in them.. that was just one of the days..
fortunately we were there 3 weeks.. the show of Force our fighter jets put on persuaded the Chads to back off ...

I did the FT Knox 12 Mile and got to enjoy Agony, Misery & Heartbreak. Did it as a trainee as well as a cadet.

I was in the 1st ID (Forward) in Germany in 1981- 1984 in an Mech Infantry Battalion. Each year during German American Week we got to do te Military Lauf. It was a 25 kilometer ruin in full battle rattle up and over Mount Hohenstaufen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohenstaufen_(mountain)
When you got back to post you had to shoot on a 50 meter range either M16 & Walter 9mm or H&K G3 & M1911A1. Time and shooting score totaled individual and team score. Did that twice.

And had the "joy" of doing Nijmegan Road MArch. 100 kilometers over 4 days on pavement. Tore up your feet and legs.

As a support guy I only had to worry about the 18th Corps standard, 20K once a year. Some units checked the block (minimum required gear) others went Rambo (full combat gear, minus ammo, 50+pound ruck.). All were timed, 4 hours for most, 3 hours for one unit. I grew up hiking so they all sucked but they were never strenuous for me. Having said that. Night before notifications (BTW you have a ruck march tomorrow), trank trails, loose road surfaces, and steep angles seem to be the real destroyer of men. Be it Bragg, Benning, Lewis, or any other location.

The 20k in the mountains of Pendleton at boot camp was the hardest. Simply because it's all new and miserable. Once you finish that one, your mind changes. After that, it all sucks but you know you can hack it....once the reaper is done, it's makes your mind for you. I've had tougher humps for sure, but that one mentally was the most forging

I can't say that I've ever experienced such an awesome team-building event; not just for my own organization, but also between my team and our partner and Allied nations marching. I highly recommend that any Service Member that has the chance try their hand at the 100 Miles.

STO Selection - 12 miles in 3 hours with full gear + a 45-lb plate sort of shoved into the radio pouch, if you could manage it, in order to try to keep the weight as close to & high up on your shoulders as possible. This was on day 4 of the week after no sleep & lots of other physical & mental beat-downs, so everyone sucked and hated life by the end. But God I miss those days, even remembering how much it sucked & having to play mental games with myself to just put one foot in front of the other! Strange thing to miss or even feel nostalgic about, but I'm betting I'm not the only one on here who can relate to that feeling.

Mine had to be "humping" our full battle loads from the NTA To Camp Hansen Okinawa. We were led by our Battalion CO (7th Marines) whom was a Silver Star receipient in Nam. This was in 89, and that LtCol could f'ing haul ass up, over and thru them narrow ass mountain trails in Oki.! We started with about a Platoon of Marines, and at the end, there were probably 20-30 of us that didn't fall back during this "leisurely stroll"! Ha-Ha
* The Bn CO earned MAD RESPECT from the young Marines, whose asses he handed to them, on that day!

I completed quite a few ruck marches but one of my favorite ones was the 12 miler at Fort Hood while in Air Assault school. The march was over a pretty gnarly set of tank trails due to some recent rains and some regular road work to go along with it. I think it was my favorite because it offered the most challenging footwork and made you stay mentally aware of your surroundings. Additionally, it was the best time I had ever posted for a 12 miler.

Magic Mountain at Camp Giant South Korea. It was only 6 miles, but you can touch the road in front of you by sticking your hand straight in front of you. Did many road marches, but Magic kicked your ass harder than most and it was a beast of a run route.

The Manchu mile Camp Casey South Korea. Start at 1800 hrs and end at 0600 or whenever you finish. Lots of uphill and down hill and I forget how many miles it was but doing it in the winter time sucked because all my water canteens were frozen and by the end of everything no one could walk for about a day.

26 mile MACREST in Okinawa out Sgt Major was leaving and that's what we wanted to say goodbye with. Engineer hill in Central Training Area CTA the road is concrete with grooves across the middle so tires can grip the road to get up it. By far the worst I ever experience. Full combat load Marines to do not hump any other way. Being I was with Comm had the radio too plus crypto and battries. On a side on this hump I was a road guard. People were dropping left and right. Anyone whoever been station in Okinawa knows the humidity is a killer.

Ft. Knox as a 19 Delta finishing OSUT. We were a distinguished Honor Platoon loaded with animals all in great condition. We attempted to do Misery, Heartbreak, Agony, and MF'r (which was supposed to be off limits due to being flat out dangerous) all in one March AND the goal was to break the base record. We came up just short by under 5 minutes. I have been on plenty, but my feet never suffered so bad like that. We all limped into the awaiting crowd for the pinning of our Sabres. No one spoke, as we were all exhausted and drenched in sweat. Toughest ruck march I've ever attempted. And I was 35 years old when I did that?

I did forced marches at Parris Island when I was a recruit and as a DI, SDI, Series Gunnery Sergeant, and First Sergeant. I did some in Okinawa as a S/Sgt. I did all kinds of them for 18 months in Vietnam as a PFC, L/Cpl, Cpl, and Sgt. I did some at Camp Lejeune, some in Scotland (when I was on Sea Duty), and some at Marine Barracks Washington DC on the C&O Canal.

The one I remember the most was the march we did at the end of Basic/AIT in Fort Sill, for artillery school. It was meant to be a 10-mile march with full ruck and M16. The deuce and half driver following us to pick up the soldiers who fell out, told us later that he clocked it on the mileage at 33.1 miles. That was the day I learned to really hate those army issue combat boots, and green wool socks that stuck to the blisters.

A lot of rucks. The only one that sticks out as a fun time was the Edelweiss in germany, which I highly recommend to any SMs stationed over there. 18 km with a questionably authorized beer break, and a nice dinner at the end with your friends.

As an Infantry NCO I would highly recommend you complete ALL of them.

I'd say the Bataan Death March at Ft Bliss was a kick in the nuts. But the many.many that I did at Ft Bragg were good too.

Bataan, Manchu Mile x4, Commando 25miler (2-10 MTN when it was led by former A co 1-9 IN (Manchu) Commander. Lots of other ones in light units that didn't get any fanfare. Not sure I'd recommend any, but you definitely get a good azimuth on the people around you and their level of suck it up and don't quit.

I remember doing alot of at your own pace marches on Bragg. Anywhere from 5km to 27km, the longest being out around MacRidge Road, Longstreet, Lamont, Manchester, Smith Lake, Matta Mile, and others. Night marches are the most fun, especially when you have a buddy to help you keep pace.

Not really a big fan of getting in files on both sides of a road and marching at intervals. I like to run as much as I can.

If your on Bragg I would recommend to do the Combat Cross Country Ruck at Smith lake every year. Its ran by MWR and the top 5 females and males go to Bataan to compete for the Army. It is usually ran in February.

Also if you like to ruck in your spare time look up GORUCK.

The Norwegian Foot March through the mountains of Montana with some Canadians from the CSOR and 3 RCR. When they were done and did their rucksack flop, they pulled out a little cooler with a couple beers in it and toasted our success. I liked rucking. But I'm weird. I trained up with my unit for Nijmegen, but since our battalion had sent people for consecutive years, they gave it to another unit (I think 82nd Engineers).

Like much of the Army, though, I did plenty of regular rucking (12 mile release marches quite often), rucking at various schools, rucking "12 milers" that ended up being a bit more than 12 miles or 15 miles or 20 miles or 25 miles on account of some people not being real clear in their understanding of how waypoints on a PLGR work.....

But I generally liked rucking.

The Ranger ruck course right out the back gate of Fort Benning is pretty intense... First mile and a half is downhill, which fills you with a sense of 'maybe this isn't so bad'... then at mile five, you hit dirt/sand... and then turn around, armed with the knowledge that the last mile and a half are back up that same hill you started on. There's also a course on the Northern Training Area on Bragg through the sand that completely shuns the laws of physics and is uphill both ways.

I was already on profile for a bad hip and knee, and pretty much just forced myself through the night. I didn't want to miss that opportunity. Definitely paid for it.

I’m a Redleg, screw that rucking. None of the rucks I’ve done were tuff. 10 miler during BOLC II was basically level ground.

i’ve done the norwegian death march and earned the norwegian foot march badge. 30km in under 4 hours 30 minutes was pretty easy

I have done too many to remember them all. They all sucked. I have jacked up feet to prove it. I also have damage to nerves in my shoulders and neck. They are necessary to make sure grunts are prepared to go the extra miles when something goes different than expected. It always does. Hooah, Rangers Lead the way! Scouts out! Been there done it. Glad to have served my country!

I remember trans from the DZ wasn’t coordinated correctly and there we were motivating ourselves down Longstreet from Sicily to the 24hr shoppete. I remember hearing my commander say “guess we will just hoof it back.” Lol no one died which is important
