Religion provides a moral and ethical code and Foundation for these belief structures. It's not that these things cannot be learned without religion, just that religion has been the vehicle for teaching these things for centuries.
If you ever read the book Bushido but, it's written as a result of a question that was posed to a Japanese professor by another scholar: How does Japan teach morals and ethics if there is no formal religion?

The brief summary is the history of the moral and ethical code that developed from the samurai and warrior culture centuries earlier. It's a fascinating read and a very short book.

He found in Bushido, the Way of the Warrior, the sources of the eight virtues most admired by his people: rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor, loyalty and self-control.

He also delved into the other indigenous traditions of Japan, such as Buddhism, Shintoism, Confucianism and the moral guidelines handed down over hundreds of years by Japan's samurai and sages. Nitobe sought similarities and contrasts by citing the shapers of European and American thought and civilization going back to the Romans, the Greeks and Biblical times. He found a close resemblance between the samurai ethos of what he called Bushido and the spirit of medieval chivalry and the ethos of ancient Greece, as observed in books such as the Iliad of Homer.

That's an overview from Wikipedia, not my analysis.

That's not the direction I thought you were going with that. I would say that's more lifestyle philosophy than religion. Much like Buddha's (Gautama) teachings of the 4 noble truths and the 8 fold path are a road map to end personal suffering. The religion part came later when the Hindu's dubbed Buddha a god after his death and the Chinese adopted Buddhism and ritualized it turning the teachings into a religion.

I guess that's a personal question you will need to find a satisfactory answer yourself.

I don’t have a satisfactory answer. I’m here asking other people what their satisfactory answer is.

Well all I can tell you is that during my many times of stress or self doubt I have found comfort and answers to some of life questions through the religious techings of the religion I choose to follow.

CSM Thomas McGarry Could those questions only be answered in a religious context?
