On February 25 the CSA Joseph E. Johnston 1865 assumed command in NC; the first southern state capitol of Nashville, TN fell to the north in 1862 and a chance engagement occurred in Georgia in 1864. Joe Johnson commanded the Army of Northern VA until being severely wounded 5/31/1862 when Robert E. Lee took over.

There were many significant events that happened on February 25; but, the occupation of nashville by union forces after the Fort Donelson campaign had been concluded was the most significant. The occupation of Nashville was the first southern capitol to be occupied. This probably helped fortify US Senator Andrew Johnson's position as the only southern senator who remained loyal to the union.

Is the question which is more significant or is the question of which really happened? Taking Nashville is the most significant, even more so because it was also the state capital.

It is interesting that the date seems to be the day of choice for taking command of the North Carolina troops?
And LTC Stephen F. to give a Civil War bone to our naval friends,

MSG Brad Sand - thanks that was before the US Civil war started and long after England outlawed slavery but it was good news that the USS Saratoga captured a slave sloop. The War with the Barbary pirates was after all a war to release captured primarily white slaves of the muslim rulers in the region. They were captured usually from merchant vessels but every now and then from military vessels.
It reminds me of the way the somali pirates go after merchant vessels to this day.

Yes Sir, the shelling of Fort Sumter was not until April but the Confederate States of America was formed on February 9, 1861.
