Some folks have a habit of getting their hopes set for a singular duty station and get mopey if they get anything other than that. Making lemonade and taking advantage of opportunities is what its all about. The only duty station I don't feel I took full advantage of is when I was stationed at Camp Lejeune North Carolina and that's mainly due to op tempo. I was officially stationed there 15 months. Most of that time had me away training, deployed to Afghanistan or on pre/post deployment leave. Maybe only a few months total and at a few weeks at a time. And most of that was local training, pre/post deployment work up stuff and annual training like rifle range where we lived at the range for 3 weeks. Not alot of time for anything more than a bite and a movie. Okinawa, Japan for a year and Kansas City, Missouri for a year.

I will say the duty station I liked the least was Kansas City. I ended up working with only 5 other marines, besides myself, and having to report to civilians who had never spent a day in uniform. The trouble with such an assignment…everything else is down hill. Aside from my deployments, every other assignment in BIG BLUE brought disappointment among the “struggling for existence” world of just-in-case missions and BS activities that had no + impact, but on paper served as “career advancement” opportunities. To include 1 other, my 4 years at the survival school was a hell of a way to go out. Again, mission focused. The only bad thing about that was being a tenant unit of the “Fairchild Freestyle”. Of course, we had to know German to do our job and because it was a "total emersion" environment, our language abilities improved daily. Benning clothing sales used to have nearly every crest and patch you could imagine. Benning has a Recreation area on the Florida pan handle. Bragg should be similar as to be a larger post with all the attendant services. There's a lot of personnel preferences involved. The biggest thing is to take advantage of what each place has to offer. You've got 4-5 years left on your enlistment to decide about longer term. Germany was great for 3 years. Chances are you are going to see 9 month deployments some where. Some will be crappy like FOB living others may be palatial. You may get to see some or all that's what happens in an army career. I arrived at night so I couldn’t see the base much when they dropped me off at the barracks. I was hungry it was late but the Geedunk was open and they had hamburgers. Fries soft drinks, you name it. I sat down with my burger and guess which song came on? California Dreamin. To this day when I hear that song I go back to that moment. When I got up in the morning and went out to go to chow, I thought there must have been a mistake. I looked around and I saw palm trees, green. Grass, red tiled roofs on clean painted stucco buildings. All painted the same beige cream color. It looked like a resort. I made my way to the chow hall and I couldn’t believe that either. I was thrilled with the variety of food. Eggs to order, bacon, piled high, ham slices, pancakes, waffles, hash browns, an automatic toaster putting out a continuous supply of toast. And oh yeah, lots of fresh sweet rolls and muffins, juice, coffee and milk dispensers. I had never seen so much food at once and I could have as much as I wanted. The base was spread out and our barracks was far from everything. We called base transportation to go everywhere. I went there right out of basic. My introduction to the REAL Air Force ruined me for the depersonalization of tech school. I was given a 30 day convalescent leave after the TDY was over and I had orders to go to Tech School at Chanute AFB (also closed now). Due to the fact the HDQS unit never went to the field, we were ordered to turn our TA-50 sleeping bags back into supply. When I turned in my sleeping bag, I also tried to turn in my foam rubber sleeping mat. When I went to hand the supply sergeant my sleeping mat, he asked me why I was turning it into supply. I told him if I didn’t need my sleeping bag, why would I need my sleeping mat. He then said, “Wellwhat are you going to lay on when you have to do sit-ups.” Having been in units where you laid on wet muddy ground while doing sit-ups, when I heard this remark from the supply sergeant, I realized just how great my my time in HQDS was going to be. I was a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic assigned to the 534th Signal Company, 69th Signal BN, 5th Signal BG. This was a Fixed Station Signal Company, meaning there was no field duty. Our Unit maintained all the Armed Forces Radio and Television Services as well as all the Dial Central Offices (Telephone Services) in Southern Germany and into Northern Italy. I was supposed to be stationed at one of the several out stations (Krabenloch Kaserne) in Kloster Lechburg, South of Augsburg almost to Landsburg; but there was a need for a person to fill the slot of Military Drivers License clerk. As I was able to type and arrange for training for all those assigned to the Company I was allowed to be 'detained' in Augsburg. Located 36 miles to the North West of Munich it was just a very amazing duty station. I had other duties such as duty driver any time a soldier needed transportation to Frankfurt for ETS, PCS, or Emergency Flights to the States. No Field Duty what so ever. In fact after my first tour in Germany with a tactical Signal BN I spent half my days either going to, being in, or returning from the field! At one point we were asked if anyone was interested in attending Reforger 1978. I jumped on it as I knew it was only for two or three days and the best part was the duty location was with a German Army Unit! We had a Beer with our Lunch and Dinner meals! What a difference that was. No sleeping in a tent, no roughing it at all! We had a building to stay in with a real bed, showers, and NO MUD. We had an easy time of it compared to many other units. I guess after being assigned to a Tactical Signal Unit getting assigned to a Fixed Station Unit was well earned by all that were lucky enough to be assigned to the Unit! As a dependent I particularly enjoyed Ft Carson and SHAPE in Mons, Belgium. I graduated high school in Germany and in my own time in I did a hitch in Germany - I loved the country and duty in an 8-inch Field Artillery battalion wasn't bad. My unit went through a rough patch toward the end and several in my chain of command were relieved as a result. Still leaves a bad taste in my memories.

You're going to Bragg (now Ft. Liberty - will always be "Bragg" to me, sorry). So if I may address this. I've been out over 35 years, but though some details have changed I hope the general truths hold true and this helps.

I spent most of my time at Ft Bragg- and served in several units both in XVIII Abn Corps and 82nd Airborne Division. I enjoyed some of the assignments more than others - I will tell you this, in my own experience at Ft Bragg I never served in any unit that required anything less than excellence and hard work. Even the worst battery I was assigned to (when I first arrived at post) was good at what they did in the field and a new chain of command turned them around.

We used to say there are "different Armies" at Ft Bragg. Back when I was in you had 1st COSCOM (Corps Support Command) who provided logistical support for the XVIII Airborne Corps units on post - most of them were non-Airborne, or "Legs." There were (I think most of them have been de-activated or consolidated) various Independent Brigade sized units, such as the 20th Engineer Brigade, 35th Signal Brigade, XVIII Abn Corps Field Artillery (we became 18th FA Bde (Abn) while I was there, it was my first "jump" assignment) and others like the MP Brigade. Some of these units were on jump status, some were partially on status, some were entirely non-Airborne.

Then there was the "Division." The 82nd Airborne Division was and is the largest command on the post.

In addition there were the "Snake Eaters" - when I was there there were two Special Forces Groups on Bragg - the 5th and 7th Group. The JFK Special Warfare Center, later on came Special Operations Command (SOCOM). I could go on but you get the picture.

The point is each of these units have a unique position and mission peculiar to their mission. I always joke that I learned in Basic Training there were three ways to do something - the right way, the wrong way - and the ARMY way. When I signed in to the 82nd I learned there was a fourth way - the "DIVISION" way. And there was usually a valid reason for why we did things the way we did - whether I agreed with it or not. Our mission was unique. Guys would come in from other Airborne units (as I did) and remark at how we did things differently at Bragg than they did in Italy or Alaska or other places we had Airborne units. I'm sure our guys went over there and experienced the same thing.

With your MOS you shouldn't be eating mud - unless you really want to. If you go Airborne chances are your options at Bragg will broaden. But you will see a difference in the various commands and sub-commands on post. Folks in one command will look at folks in the other command and say, "I'm glad I'm not you!" But, for the most part, your experience will be what you make it.

Some of the best advice I ever received came from my first Chief of Firing Battery in Germany when I signed in the Summer of 1975, "Be where you're supposed to be, doing what you're supposed to be doing, and stay off drugs and you'll be okay."

I have thought about that many times and how profound it was. I used to do volunteer work in a prison and was teaching a class and realized most of the guys I was working with were there because they were somewhere they weren't supposed to be, doing something they weren't supposed to be doing and more often than not, drugs were involved. The section consisted of a SSG tower chief, 4 to 6 controllers, and one maintenance specialist. The airfield was a very low activity field consisting mostly of helicopters. There was one aviation battalion on the post and I believe a couple of other units. We were only open from 0700-1700 daily Mon thru Fri .. closed Sat-Sun .. closed holidays .. the controllers worked 2 or 3 man crews 2 shifts a day .. 1st shift worked from 0700-1200 and 2nd shift worked from 1200-1700 .. alternating shifts every other day. When we were idol waiting for traffic (usually 20-30 aircraft a shift) we would study (I took several CLEP tests at the Ed Center), play 2 man games (Scrabble, backgammon, cribbage), or just read. We had NO formations, NO PT, NO extra duty. Routinely got sprayed by Agent Orange frequently while helicopters were denuding the kill zone around the base. Nothing like laying out on top of your bunkers at our NSAD Phu Bai Seabee compound fifty yards from the airstrip watching the 122 rockets in the night sky drop as their propellant burned out and guessing where the rockets would hit us. Nothing like a trip down HWY 1 South to Danang and getting hit by RPG's while in a convoy or taking a short 8 mile trip between Phu Bai and Hue in the late afternoon and getting hit by sniper fire as those green tracer rounds flew by our heads. Then there was the trips out to man the Pumping Station on the Nam Hoa River that supplied the water by pipeline to the Phu Bai Combat Base as our bunkeer was next to the bridge that got blown up by sappers. After too many AK & AR rounds punched holes in the 10 mile pipeline the Seabees installed spigots so thirsty GI's & Mr. Charles could get a drink of water without fucking up the water pressure in that 3 Star's shower back at Phu Bai. Then there was that late night Medevac when one soldier dropped a grenade (that was suppose to go into the water below to kill sappers) accidentally had it land on the bridge instead. 101st dust off saved some lives that night. Even got introduced to Starlight/Starbright on that bridge and saw a bunch of Mr. Charles trying to sneak up on us, that's when the Quad 50's opened up and mowed the lawn, cleared the brush and took out a few trees along with the uninvited party crashers. Then there was that autorotation in that helicopter, and that sniper bullet in the Navy vehicle that shot by my head and through the front and back glass of our vehicle - I saw this asshole pop up looking our way and I returned fire. The most fun was that hometown reunion at a Marine bunker complex along Highway One in the Hi Van Pass where 1 Marine, 1 Army and 1 Navy guy from El Campo, TX got together for a hometown photo opportunity posted on my page & then we got hit by RPG's & beaucoup AK fire. That got followed up by the first time I ever saw a Marine Cobra gunship in action parked in the air 100 yards away about 500 feet in altitude firing rockets and cannons into Charlie's general position - that was fucking awesome. Then one of my most favorite memories was the time we stole the 105 Howitzer from that Army depot at Phu Bai. Long story but a Red Leg Major from 101st was screaming at a REMF officer about his 105's being out of action at his fire support position because they were burning up due to all the shit going down on that little Dong Ap Bia Hill 937 which became known as Hamburger Hill. The REMF officer told him he didn't have the proper paperwork and couldn't release the brand new 105 he had in storage. Our little Seabee band of thieves heard the commotion, approached the 101st officer and hatched a stealthy plan. During the night when a "round eye" USO show with real American not PI girls was going on we arrived in a formerly captured Army jeep that got repainted in Marine green and renumbered after TET, a big RT fork life and lowboy trailer - after the E-3 with officer bars go saluted at the gate we loaded up the 105 and took it to the end of the air strip where it got picked up by a chopper and flown to the fire base supporting the grunts on Hamburger Hill. The shit really hit the fan with the MP's & Army CID who finally figured out it wasn't Marines that stole their 105 after all but probably those rascally Seabees. Somehow, God and the 101st Commander were evidently looking after us - so after lengthy interrogations, threats, etc. nobody talked but the case got mysteriously dropped by 504th MP's & CID. A few days later a 101st slick lands in our compound with a pallet of beer and steaks compliments of the 101st. Our Old Man couldn't figure it out and my Warrant Officer boss who had figured it out told the Old Man "you don't want to fucking know!" There are too many stories like these that made NSAD Phu Bai, RVN during my 1968-1969 deployment the best duty station of all in the Navy. My First unit after Basic and AIT was with A Company 34th Signal BN. I was stationed at Krabenloch Kasern in Ludwigsburg, West Germany October 1973. I ETS'd after my first tour and joined the US Army Reserve in Springfield, Missouri, HHC 2nd of the 75th Field Artillery. I was their PLL Clerk, but really had no job except when we did our Summer tour to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I soon reenlisted and was on my way back to Germany; this time to a fixed station Signal unit, HHC 534th Signal Company in Augsburg, West Germany June 1977. After a realignment of duties I was reassigned to Schwabstadl Kasern in Kloster Lechfeld, Germany. After a short tour there I was once again reassigned to HHC 2nd of the 31st Infantry BN in Fort Ord California. I enjoyed both of my tours in West Germany and Fort Ord had it's pluses but each unit had it's fair share of negatives. If I were to say my first tour of Germany was the best it would be because I felt I made the most improvements within my unit. My 2nd tour of Germany would have to be the best assignment as that is where I met my current wife of the past 44 years. Playing the best reasons against the worst is not an easy task as each of the units I was assigned to had their fair share of ups an downs. Sadly every unit including my short time with the US Air Force Reserve with the 406 CLSS McClellan Air Force Base are no longer in assistance. I met so many great people and worked with many good but it is the problem ones that put the sting into my memories. I had a run in with a SGT in the 34th Signal that lied to a pre-Court Marshal Board. Had it not been for a PVT and another SGT I hate to think what would have happened to me. Then in my 2nd duty station in Germany I had a run in with our Site Chief SFC that threatened to kill me. Like an idiot I did not take him to the IG's Office although I had fifty witnesses to the threat. Then at my last active duty station at Fort Ord, California I as the BN Motor Sgt as an E-5 and had a run in with a CWO-1 Motor Officer that gave everyone in the Motor Pool an EER with the highest value of 28. I rated a grand total of 27. I refused to sign the EER and threw it back on his desk. My last duty station was with the US Air Force Reserve unit the 406 CLSS at McClellan, AFB California. After two years of reserve meetings and 7 months of AIT I had an accident during duty training that ended up with a report from the Medical Review Board with a message that I be notified that I was to be 'Severed from Service' due to my back injury. VA now deals with my issues. It has been good overall but you just have to take the good with the bad as one works to build you up and the other tears you down but only if you allow it to! You have to make the best of what each duty station hands you! Just remember that life makes no promises except that one day you will no longed be with the living so live your life and make the most of every moment that you can! I was in the Army in Air Defense Artillery as a Chaparral Missile Crewman for 4 years and I did 6 years in the Air Force Reserve years later. We had a small unit at Ramstein , B Btry 2/60 ADA and a year later it was redisgnated as 3/44 ADA. We had Chaparral , Vulcan , and Stinger in our unit. We also had Headquarters Btry in our same building. We went to Crete , Greece every year for Live Fire Competition. We worked like 2 or 3 days and then had 4 or 5 days to ourselves. The only thing that sucked was we had to stay in Greek Army Base Barrack with the squat toilets and showers with the water tanks on the roof heated by the sun. The Vulcans went to Todendorf , West Germany for their Live Fire and Competition every year. I went there one year as support and got to check out Kiel and their museums and toured a WW2 German U-Boat that they had at the museum. Great nightclubs there too. Ramstein and the surrounding area had some good clubs , live music , and Air Force girls that loved to party with us Army guys. Ha ha. Cold and wet in the field , but it was all worth it. I traveled to several other countries and miss it to this day. Great beer and food also. I was there from 85-90 with the 319th MI BN (525 MI BDE) and 327th SIG BN (35th SIG BDE). You worked hard and played hard and ready to deploy when you went home at night, even at the Corps level. Back then we were able to make deals with other motor pools for parts to keep the line up, not sure how it's done now. I was on jump status in both units and the S-3 Air for the 327th - we had a blast! Bragg was my furst duty station and all the others seemed to move very slowly with no sense of urgency. I enjoyed the fast pace and knowing that if we got called-up, we were ready! Your duty will be what you make it. Enjoy your time while you can because it will fly by way to quickly. Blessings!
