What housing options do I have during AIT as a reclass 68P?

I am a 25B SPC reclassing to a 68P. I know phase 1 is about 24 weeks long and phase 2 is about 22 weeks. I am wanting my boyfriend to move to Fort Sam with me while I go to school. As a reclass soldier will I be able to live off post with him since it is considered a PCS or will I be forced to live in the dorms? Will I have the option to stay at Fort Sam for phase 2 or is it based on open slots?

When I was at AIT with prior service I stayed in barracks with no drills.

the army only recognizes marriages and possibly other legal unions, not entirely sure on that part. but no as far as I know you will not be able to live off post. as far as the army is concerned, you're a single soldier and will be treated accordingly. it being a PCS is besides the matter as well. until you are married or reach a certain rank you will stay in the barracks

Unless you have a situation that would exempt you from living in the barracks (married, kids), then you would be staying in the barracks. Army regulation is that single without dependent soldiers below the rank of SSG/E-6 will live in the barracks. If the barracks are full, E-5(P) and E-5s, by priority are moved out first to free up room.

Good question. Because you are a reclass, and not someone who is still going through IET, you may get consideration to not have to live in the barracks. Here's the thing though: There is not a lot of off post housing close to post that will be affordable to you. Second, there is no guarantee that you will do phase II at BAMC.

When I reclassed to 38B had to live in the barracks. Check your orders for the school, it should mention POV's and moving family.

I was a 91P back in the day (which is what became 68P) and while I was at Ft. Sam, E-4 and below, unless married, were in the barracks. E-5 and above who were single (which is what you are considered by the Army until you're actually married) had additional on-base quarters, but they were 1 and 2 man rooms. I believe they were up at 925, but I don't even know if that building is still there, lol... Gosh, has it been 20 years?

If you are active duty and have dependent(s) registered in DEERS, you receive a PCS order for 68P AIT that authorize the move to on/off-post housing. I've lived off-post during phase I even as an IET soldier. Back then, single prior service soldiers used to live in a separate barracks with a roommate but with more liberty including vehicles and smoking/drinking privileges. Last I've heard that smoking/drinking privileges are taken away. Phase II sites will usually be determined based on your GPA. Highest GPA gets to pick where he/she wants first. So, Phase II site depends on what your classmates want, how high your GPA is, site availability, etc. Places like Hawaii was only available for single soldiers due to high cost of move.

If you are unmarried, plan on staying in the barracks. When I was there as a student and then much later as an instructor, Phase II locations were based on slot availability and number of registered x-ray techs at the Phase II site and your ranking in the class.

Phase one you will Be in Prior service barracks but you don't nessicaraly have to stay there just have a room there. As for phase 2, you put in a list of places you want to go and they pick based on what they need. But fort Sam is an option.
