It's grown a LOT since then. Having said that, there's not too many ways in and out of post, so you want to live on post if you can.

Also, when you get there, if you like seafood, go to a place called 'The Shell House', which is on the way to Savannah.

And lastly, you being married, stay away from 'The Big Apple' if it's still there. It's a strip club, and you just might find some of the dancers might be known to you, and THAT would be awkward...... I was there for 6 years and loved every minute of it. It's been a little over 10 years since being there and I still can't get back there for the life of me. It's like they won't send me back since I was there for so long. The area is beautiful, if you can get a house out in Richmond Hill. It puts you just 20 minutes away from post and 15 minutes from savannah. Savannah is where we spent most of our off time and if you like to fish, you got the luxury of both fresh and salt water within minutes from Richmond, you just have to fend off a few gators though. You will be closer to your work and it will be less hassle. You can come home for lunch, etc. The traffic on 144 can be a pain. BAH, is still the same regardless if you live in Richmond Hill or Savannah. Myself, We decided to stay, after we retired. All our appointments are still here on post and in Hinesville and Hinesville is growing. If you are only going to be here a few years and want to rent then go in Hinesville. Saves you money on gas and other expense's. Make you military pay count. If you decide to buy a house there are plenty here for good prices. Liberty park is building a lot of houses here and rental's go fairly fast around the neighbor hood. It's right outside Gate 7, If you like the city then by all mean's move to Richmond Hill. The overall pro's to living in Hinesville for us has been (1) Owning our own house (2) Less wear and tear on our cars (3) Also saved us on gas money, so we could make our military pay go further for other fun activities and expenses. (4) Less going out to lunch or dinner and eating more at home, spend more quality time with spouse, kids and pets (5) Plenty of time to shower at home vs showering at the gym or a friend on a daily basis. (6) Forget something important? No problem running back home here in Hinesville, Richmond Hill forget it might as well spend more at the clothing and sales. (7) Be practical about what your the next few years will bring you. Either way you will move up in rank, and still save more in the long run on your overall quality of life. I didn't mind it too much but it gets old after 3years... depending on your MOS and where you are coming from.

The train here if your not use to rotations are always having units comeing and going. I lived on post, and this is something I recommend unless you want to drive about and hour away to a decent home because living outside this post is not a place you want your family, my opinion.

And as you become a leader it's more convenient to live on post and easy to react to some of the things that come down. Basically you're in a good spot other than Ft Benning or Ft Gordon (home of Signal Corps) ... Ft Stewart itself is just like in the middle of nowhere but you have a lot of options to go around to.
